    Seahawks Year Report
    ================================================== =
    Coach: Chuck Knox
    Yrs: 18
    Season Record: 9-7
    Overall Record: 164-105 (.610)
Status: Chuck Knox is easily one of the best NFL coaches to ever stand on the sidelines, and it highly underrated because of the teams he played with prior. (Rams/Bills) This 18 year veteran just coached his 8th season with the Seattle Seahawks franchise, and it was a solid 9-7 effort that saw them enter into the wild card playoffs. The Seahawks passing game surprised many defenses this season, and Knox wanted it that way. This overlooked team has managed to sneak out solid records ever since Knox became their headcoach. Knox worse coaching seas was 1989 when he went 7-9 with the Seahawks, other than that the Seahawks have remained 8 victories or above since 1983.

    Seahawks Individual Player Statistics
    -----------------------------------------------------------------------

    Seahawks Team MVP
    --------------------------------------------------------
    WR Brian Blades

    Seahawks Player Standouts
    ---------------------------------------------------------------
    1. - WR Brian Blades 85 Rec 13.7 Avg 1,167 Yds 15 TD 6 Drop 17 KR 28.7 Avg 489 Yds 1 TD 12 PR 70 Yds
Info: Brian Blades had a breakout 1990 season that may have established himself as one of the best young wide outs in the league. After getting the #1 spot last season Blades put up 77 catches for 1,063 yards and 5 touchdowns, a valiant effort that was only surpassed by his unbelievable following output. This year Blades led all receivers with an astonishing 15 touchdowns on 85 catches. That means that 17.6% of the time Blades caught the football, it was for a touchdown! Blades easily took home the Seahawks team MVP award, but the more valueable one may be the WR of the year award given by the league.

    2. - CB Patrick Hunter 62 Tak 13 Deflect 7 Int 2 TD
Info: Patrick Hunter started off at the #2 spot at cornerback but slowly faught his way to tops on Seattle after he led the Seahawks with 7 interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns. Hunter also earned his first Pro Bowl spot in 1990. Hunter started off hot with 6 interceptions in the first 9 weeks of the regular season, only to cool down with 1 over the final 8, but he still proved he has what it takes, and really surprised many quarterbacks this year.

    3. - WR Tommy Kane 53 Rec 13.6 Avg 722 Yds 8 TD 1 Drop 49 KR 21.5 Avg 1,055 Yds 39 PR 7.3 Avg 288 Yds
Info: Tommy Kane put up career high numbers after only having 13 catches for 126 yards to his career so far. Kane solidified himself at the #2 spot for the Seahawks receiving corps this year and caught 8 touchdowns. He also put up a respectable 13.6 yard per catch average, and with only one credited drop all season it was obvious that Kane had the hands Dave Kreig required of him. To top that all of, Tommy Kane was also the teams #1 kick and punt returner where he combined for 1,343 yards.

    Seahawks Player Letdowns
    -------------------------------------------------------------
    1. - LG Edwin Bailey 24 Pancakes 4 Sacks Allowed
Info: Edwin Bailey was expected to have a much better season than the lackluster year he had in 1990. Baileys an veteran lineman, but he performed the worst out of all the Seahawks starting offensive lineman, even Andy Heck who missed multiple games to an injury. The Seahawks may have to start contemplating a replacement for Bailey in the near future, if his age decline is going to be as rapid a fall off that this season seems to indicate.

    2. - LB Darren Comeaux 49 Tak 5 Loss 1 Sack 1 FF 1 FR 7 Deflect 1 Int
Info: Darren Comeaux had high expectations going into the season, 100+ tackle double digit sack expectations to be exact. However a sidelining injury kept him out until the playoffs for the Seahawks. During his short tenure Comeaux managed 49 tackles with only a single sack, the lack of versatility in Comeaux game brought some concern to Seahawks fans as they thought Darren wouldve shown better ability than he did.

    3. - LB Rufus Porter 83 Tak 6 Loss 2 Sack 1 FF 4 FR 12 Deflect 1 Int 2 TD
Info: Rufus Porter entered in 1990 with two back-to-back Pro Bowl caliber seasons. However 1990 ended up not being that type of year. Whether it was because of the injury shakeups around him that altered his playing style, or just the weight of the Seahawks defense on his shoulders, Rufus Porter did not produce as expected. Granted he still had an 83 tackle 2 sack year where he also led the team in Fumbles Recovered and showed a great ability to cover the pass with 12 deflections. Not to mention his single interception, and one of those fumble recoveries were brought back for key touchdowns. However that being said, tackle wise, rush wise, and intangibly Porter seemingly had a mediocre year that was not something a Pro Bowl caliber linebacker would put up, but rather just an average player, and fans dont think that Porter is simply average.

    Seahawks Year Review
    -----------------------------------------------------
Review: The Seattle Seahawks had a solid 1990 season that saw them finish 9-7 and sneak into a wild card playoff spot. Seattle would then take down Tampa Bay in a shootout round but falter against the eventual Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles in the Divisonal round. The Seahawks really showed that they came to play in 1990, especially their outstanding passing game. Dave Kreig lit up defenses around the league with his star wide receiver, Brian Blades, and even secondary man, Tommy Kane. Between Blades and Kane, they accounted for 23 of Kriegs 27 passing touchdowns. The Seahawks also had some young rookies contribute greatly during the year, such as rookie half-back Chris Warren taking over for John L. Williams mid-way through the year, and young defensive stars like Patrick Hunter pulling it together. However injuries to a few key defensive players, namely in the linebacker section, led to some tough losses that couldve easily been avoided. However under the mentor of the one of the greatest coaches to coach the game, Chuck Knox, theres no doubt that next season the Seahawks will be right back in the thick of things come January.

      Steelers Year Report
      ================================================== =
      Coach: Chuck Knoll
      Yrs: 22
      Season Record: 11-5
      Overall Record: 188-137 (.578)
Status: When youre the head coach of a franchise for over 20 years, you know they like you. Chuck Noll is legendary around Pittsburgh thanks to his amazing 1970s Steelers teams that won 4 Super Bowl titles. Without a doubt the Steelers have defined excellence over the years through the lead of their coach, Noll. However age is starting to hit Noll and hes coming up on the final season of his contract (1991) so rumor has it that many are expecting the old man to retire from coaching. The past 6 years or so have been tough as the Steelers entered rebuilding mode, but this season Noll managed to pull them out with a 11-5 record as it appears they may have sustained their glory again.

      Steelers Individual Player Statistics

      Steelers Team MVP
      --------------------------------------------------------
      QB Bubby Brister

      Steelers Player Standouts
      ---------------------------------------------------------------
      1. - QB Bubby Brister 284 or 461 Att 61% - 2,852 Yds 21 TD 13 Int 82.6 Rat
Info: Bubby Brister finally had the season that prospects predicted when he was initially drafted by the Steelers back in 1986. After getting the past two years to start for the Steelers Brister accomplished nothing during with a combined 20 touchdowns and 24 interceptions in those two seasons. Well this year alone Brister threw more touchdowns that those two combined and with a 61% completion rate, and with only a few interceptions. Brister had a solid year besting himself in every statistical category possible. If he can continue this progression the Steelers may have found their new star quarterback. Brister took home the team MVP award this year.

      2. - FS Larry Griffin 59 Tak 8 Deflect 7 Int 2 TD
Info: Griffin has been known as a mediocre safety during his NFL stint, however in 1990 he did some good. Griffin led the Steelers in interceptions with 7. He also led the team in defensive touchdowns as he brought back 2 of those 7 interceptions to the endzone. Griffin made the key difference in a few games, and stepped his game up in the playoffs, is this 27 year old finally entering his prime?

      3. - WR Derek Hill 69 Rec 11.2 Avg 776 Yds 6 TD 6 Drop
Info: Derek Hill is only 23 years old and was in his 2nd NFL season in 1990. After a 28 catch, 455 yard, 1 touchdown rookie performance. However Hill turned on the afterburners for 1990 and more than double his receptions, leading the Steelers in catches with 69. He also led the Steelers in receiving yards with 776 and had a respectable 6 touchdowns. Hill may have just surprised the league and vaulted himself up to the Steelers respectable #1 over Louis Lips and youngsters Dwight Stone/Chris Calloway.

      Steelers Player Letdowns
      -------------------------------------------------------------
      1. - FB Tim Worley 68 Att 2.6 Avg 182 Yds 1 Fum 21 Rec 179 Yds 2 TD 1 Drop
Info: Tim Worley surprised many people in his rookie season last year where he ran the ball 195 times for 770 yards and 5 touchdowns. The underrated back then made the transition to fullback in 1990 as the Steelers decided to duo Merril Hoge and rookie Barry Foster at the halfback spot. Thusly Worleys numbers took a huge dive in 1990. Not to mention the few times Worley did carry the football it was for a horrible 2.6 yard per carry average, and he only had a single fumble on the ground with no touchdowns. He caught 21 balls for 2 touchdowns, which is an improvement over the previous year but the negatives far outweighed the positives this season for Worley.

      2. - MLB David Little 63 Tak 6 Loss 6 Sack 2 FF 1 FR 1 Deflect 2 Int
Info: With the Steelers experimenting with a 3-4 David Little saw much action despite being the #2 middle linebacker behind Hardy Nickerson. Little was playing decently during his tenure this season but nagging injuries kept him out of many games. In the end the Steelers werent ecstatic about his season stat line.

      3. - DT Gerald Williams 32 Tak 6 Loss -3 Sack 2 Deflect
Info: Gerald Williams was head over heels better than all other Steeler defensive tackles in training camp and in the pre-season. So why did his regular season suck so much? Williams had a horrible 3 sacks on the entire season, attempting to clog up the middle in a 3-4 system.

      Steelers Review
      -----------------------------------------------------
Review: The Pittsburgh Steelers appear to be on the upswing and preparing for another solid era of football. However next year may be the final coaching season for their 23 season head coach, Chuck Noll. That will bring up much undesirable change and panic amongst Steelers players after it occurs. However with the young players that are contributing for the Steelers, whether its progressing quarterback Bubby Brister, rookie HB Barry Foster and TE Eric Green, or the young defensive stars like Hardy Nickerson, Greg Lloyd, Carnell Lake, and Rod Woodson. Either way the Steelers are sure to have a bright future on their hand baring any sudden faults.

        Yrs: 5
        Minson Record: 7-9

Status: Burns is now entering the last year of his contract as the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings. In his tenure hes gone 45-34 for a decent 57% winning percentage. Whether or not that is effective enough though will largely be determined by the outcome of next season. Burns has come close with the Vikings as they lost in the NFC Championship game just 3 short years ago.

        Vikings Player Standouts
        ---------------------------------------------------------------
        1. - WR Hassan Jones 76 Rec 13.7 Avg 1,043 Yds 7 TD 11 Drop 30 Kr 23.6 Avg 711 Yds 50 PR 11.7 Avg 589 Yds
Info: Hassan Jones proved he was the full-fledged #1 wide receiver in Minnesota during the 1990 season. Aftera 42 catch, 694 yard, 1 touchdown 1989 season he shattered all of those marks in 1990 by surpassing 1,000 yards and catching a team leading 7 touchdowns. The 26 year old receiver however did have one downside this season, and that was his lack of sure hands as he dropped a total of 11 balls during the season. However negating the blow of that was his solid kick and punt returning efforts as he pulled double duty for Minnesota.

        2. - LOLB Mike Merriweather 80 Tak 5 Loss 6 Sack 13 Deflect 5 Int 2 TD
Info: While Merriweather didnt explode in tackles this season, the veteran linebacker defiantly proved his versatility during the mediocre Viking season. He put up 6 sacks showing he could rush, but the more impressive aspect of his game was that he led the Vikings in interceptions with 5, despite being a linebacker. He also managed to return 2 of those interceptions for touchdowns, and deflected 13 passes.

        3. - SS Joey Browner 88 Tak 3 Loss 2 Sack 18 Deflect 2 Int
Info: Joey Browner is normally known to eclipse the 100 tackle mark for Minnesota, which he didnt do in 1990. But nonetheless he still led the team in tackles with 88. He also surprisingly led the team in deflections with 18, proving he was great as a coverage safety.

        Vikings Player Letdowns
        -------------------------------------------------------------
        1. - QB Rich Gannon 257 of 472 Att 54% - 2,607 Yds 15 TD 24 Int 59.9 Rat 1 Rsh TD
Info: Rich Gannon was not the replacement at quarterback that Minnesota was expecting. After battling it out with Wade Wilson Rich won the starting job and went to work during the regular season. In this he completed 54% of his passes for 2,607 yards and 15 touchdowns. But it was the glaring 24 interceptions that plummeted his quarterback rating to sub 60.

        2. - LG Randall McDaniel 27 Pancakes 10 Sacks Allowed
Info: McDaniel has slowly become known as a solid young guard in the league, however 1990 he seemed to revert that. He performed the worst out of all the starters statistically, except Lowdermilk, but he was injured. Although it was most likely just a disappointing season and he will still be a strong lineman for years to come.

        3. - CB Carl Lee 39 Tak 1 FF 4 Deflect 4 Int
Info: For the Vikings #1 cornerback Carl Lee really disappointed this season. He only deflected 4 balls, that has to be an all-time low for a #1 corner. He proved to be a liability in the passing game, which is something the 29 year old normally isnt as his previous two seasons saw him go to Hawaii.

        Vikings Year Review
        -----------------------------------------------------
Review: The Minnesota Vikings started off to a rocky 0-3 season but finished in 7-6, which obviously wasnt enough to send them to the playoffs. However there is hope as the young players on the team seemed to show promise. Namely in the wide receiver area as Hassan Jones and Cris Carter both put up solid numbers. If they can get Gannon to improve, or find another quarterback the Vikings could have a solid passing game. However with only 2 total rushing touchdowns, one by Rich Gannon, on the entire Vikings team in 1990, its definitely something that Minnesota needs to address in the future off-seasons if they hope to have any chance at making it into the playoffs at this rate.

Info: Phil Simms had an outstanding career that ended on a high note. Nobody was expecting the 36 year old to call it quits because he hadnt fallen off the charts yet. While 1990 wasnt his best year, it was certainly close enough to warrant a return. However the aging player may have been able to produce statistically, but he believes its his physical body that just cant keep up. Simms ends his career with over 28,000 yards passing and a solid 54.7% completion rate over the span of 12 years, all with the Giants.

Info: Steve DeBerg was a solid quarterback who suffered from not being able to find himself, and bad situations. Where ever DeBerg went it seems like he was soon backing up to an upcoming star. In San Francisco he was overtaken by Joe Montana, in Denver, by John Elway, in Tampa Bay, by Vinny Testaverde, and even in his final season with the Kansas City Chiefs he couldnt complete due to injury as he watched Steve Pueller take the helm. DeBerg was markedly inconsistent throughout his career. Either having a solid game or a horrible one. His 173 interceptions outshine his 147 touchdowns, something that hurt him over the years. He also retried in the game a full 4 seasons worth of stats before he did in real life. Which accounts for the almost 9,000 yard difference in his career stats.

Info: Jeff Rutledge has been nothing more than a career backup for 3 separate teams during his career. Despite this, he has had the luxury of watching one of his teams win the Super Bowl from the bench. In a season in which he threw only 4 passes, 3 in the regular season, and 1 in the post-season (against 49ers) the 1986 year saw the Giants win the Super Bowl and Rutledge achieved what many yearn for. Rutledge Retired 2 seasons (with the Redskins) prior in-game than he did in real life. Not to mention in real life he got a chance to toss 455 yards and 2 tds in 1990, where here he sat backing up both Mark Rypien and Stan Humphries.

Info: Joe Ferguson is a quarterback of old. He started for the Bills from 1974 to 1984, a solid player. While he was never considered one of the best, he would do his job. A few solid years like 1981 and 1983 helped to pull him away from the interception laden previous seasons. However a 1-2 playoff record has left him without any accolades. In real life, as in game Ferguson retired in 1990 after one season backing up for the Colts. Except in real life he threw 8 passes, completing 2 for 21 yards and throwing 2 interceptions. Other than that nothing has changed.

Info: Steve Grogan is one of the names that pop into your head when you think of the New England Patriots. This 37 year old quarterback has spent 16 long seasons with the team. He has bounced around from starter to backup, and did his job serviceably during his time. However the emergence of a young Marc Wilson in 1990 negated any chance at ending on a bang. Only a slight difference in his 1990 season from real to game life slightly altered his career total.

Info: Blair Keil didnt accomplish much during his career. It is pretty hard to when you play for 7 years only to throw 91 passes. Kiel did surprise many though by retiring at 29 years old, as it was expected he would at least stick around to be the Packers backup for a few more seasons. In real life Kiel threw for 135 of his 193 career attempts in his final two seasons, 1990 and 1991.

Info: Tommy Kramer had his shining moments with the Vikings as their starter, namely 1986 where he had 3000 yards and 24 touchdowns with only 10 interceptions. He has been known to be a slinger as hes eclipsed 3000 yards numerous times, but its his accuracy that is in question. Despite that one solid year he finished with 159 touchdowns to 157 interceptions, definitely not astonishing. The only difference between his real life performance and his fake is a single completion, one less attempt, and one less interception in his final and only season away from the Vikings in 1990.

Info: Vince Evans was a unique quarterback who really excelled at running the football close to the goal line. He has pretty much been a backup all his career except for 1980 and 1981 where he had a shot at starting with the Chicago Bears. In 1980 he threw for only 2039 yards and 11 touchdowns, but he also ran for 8 touchdowns! The following year he dropped down to 11 touchdowns in the air and 3 touchdowns on the ground, and then spend the rest of his career backing up. In real life Evans didnt retire until 1995, when he was 40 years old, and it was one of his better seasons as he actually got to start a few games due to injuries.

Info: Mark Herrman was only givena single chance at pulling out a starting job in 1985 when he played a mediocre season for the San Diego Chargers, although completing 65.7% of his passes he otherwise let them down. Switching 5 separate times in 9 years between 4 different teams did not help his situation much. In real life Herrmann would backup for the Colts for two more seasons before retiring.

Info: It was very surprising that Ottis Anderson decided to retire. Not only is he only 33 years old, having at least a couple years left in him (like real life, retired 1992), but he went to the Pro Bowl in 1990. He was a great running back for the Rams throughout his career until he came to New York where he was a backup. But then in 1988 they used Anderson as a goaline back and with only 65 attempts and 208 yards, he got 8 touchdowns. The next season they decided to start him again and he busted double digit touchdowns. Then this year he excelled his average yards per carry back to the 4.0+ range that he used to have with the Rams. It was like his career was re-vitalized, but instead he decided to leave with 10,723 yards as his total on his career, 5th all-time at this point, as well at 6th all time in rushing touchdowns at this point.

Info: Larry Kinnebrew is a very underrated runningback that retired without much playing time. At 31 years old he had only played in 6 full seasons where he got carries. Most with the Bengals. However in his entire career he only averaged less than 4 yards per carry once in 1987 where he went for 3.9 yards per carry. The surprising bit is that in his 6 years where he actually played he had a very respectable 43 yard touchdowns, showing he was a goal line threat.

Info: Barry Redden had one shot in 1986 to prove his worth and he did decently putting up a 4.2 yard per carry average and 4 touchdowns on 110 attempts. However thats about the highlight of his career as he couldnt find starting work with the Chargers or Browns over the next 4 seasons. His career totals wouldve made a great regular season for a top back. The only difference between real life and in-game was that in real life in 1990 he had 1 carry for negative 1 yards.

Info: Mosi Tatupu has had an unsung career with the New England Patriots. He is not known for his flashy running style although in the early 80s he proved he could carry the football having three straight seasons with a 5.3+ yard per carry average. The man was mostly known for his toughness and blocking ability that really helped the Patriots when they needed it most. In real life Tatupu was picked up by the Rams in the off-season and spent his final season, 1991, backing up.

Info: Disappointing to see Drew Hill retired at 34 years old after he had one of the best years of his real life career in 1991, and still played until the end of 93. Hill started off with the rams always catching the deep ball, and it wasnt until he moved to Houston did he finally break out. Last season Drew Hill may have just barely missed the 1k yard mark, but his 12 touchdowns were enough to prove to the league that he deserved to be in the Pro Bowl, as he got his 2nd Pro Bowl appearance. That 12 touchdown in-game performance made up for the 12 total touchdowns that Hill would have in real life between 1990 and 1993, leaving him with the same TD total in both real and in-game careers. Info: James Lofton unfortunately retired 3 years prior to his real retirement, but still had a solid career. One of the greatest deep threats of all time who managed a 17.7 average over his career. His 11,854 yards allowed him to retire 3rd all-time behind Steve Largent, Charlie Joiner, and Don Maynard.

Info: Its very rare when a wide receiver hits his peak past 30, but it appears thats what J.T. Smith, and despite that decided to retire at age 35 despite a respectable 1990 season. Smith started off on the chiefs, playing second fiddle well before he got a chance as the #1 for the Rams in 1986 and 1987 hitting his career highs. A few seasons worth of games for the Cardinals and he decides to call it quits. The only knock on Smith is his touchdowns total as he never really had a nose for the endzone, in his 13 years pro, despite starting in nearly all seasons he only average just under 3 touchdowns a year.

Info: Stanley Morgan was one of the greatest receivers to catch a football that never got recognized. Morgan has an amazing ability to jump and get the deep ball. During his years with the Patriots he had some of the most outstanding seasons, specifically 1979 and 1981 where he had under 50 catches, but over 1000 yards and 18 combined touchdowns.

Info: Ozzie Newsome is one of the best tight ends to play the game and his career is coming to an end now after 13 solid seasons with the Cleveland Browns. Info: Mickey Shuler had a brief period where he was a top-notch tight end, from 1984 to 1988. He proved his pass catching ability with 4 out of 5 years with 65+ catches, and even had 2 Pro Bowl appearances. He also decided to retire on a high note as the Philadelphia Eagles won a Super Bowl this season, and as a result he felt after 13 years and this victory his NFL career was now complete.

Info: Not a very illustrious career for Mike Tice. However the tight end did had a long career backing up for the Seahawks. He was pretty powerful and a decent blocker but never really showed much of a receiving ability.

Info: Some probably wonder why Steve Folsom ever even decided to play football. After his rookie year with the Eagles in 1981, in which he never caught a ball, he left football until 1987, when he was signed by the Cowboys to play backup. He would proceed over the next 4 years combined to catch an average of 10 catches, and 1 touchdown a season before he announced his retirement this year.

Info: Ronnie Lee is an interesting character. He started off his career as a tight end for the Miami Dolphins, backing up between 1979 and 1982. Then he went to the Falcons where they decided to try him out at an official offensive lineman position because of how good he was at blocking. Then after that one year, he returned to the Dolphins, this time staying at offensive tackle. He ended his career in 1990 with his only year as a Seahawk.

Info: Mike Webster is considered one of the best offensive linemen to have ever played in the NFL. His 15 years with the Pittsburgh Steelers, including a 8 consecutive season Pro Bowl start proved this. Its a shame that offensive lineman statistics werent tracked back then because he wouldve been right up there. However two short injury-stinted years for the 39 year old with the Chiefs did not tarnish his accomplishments on his career. He had the luxury of being with the Steelers during their 4 Super Bowl victories, including in his rookie season.

Info: Mike Bell slowly worked his way into a starting position in 1983 and 984 for the Chiefs where he had a solid two years combining for 23.5 sacks. However he tapered off in 1985 with 6 and then was injured for the entire 1986 season. He came back to half form with a 6.5 sack season and then ended his career playing second fiddle in Kansas City. Bell retired with 40 sacks on his career and 10 fumbles recovered.

He retired with 46 sacks to his name and 10 fumbles recovered.

Info: Al Harris has been a decent linebacker during his times. He played for the Chicago Bears from 1979 to 1988, and then ended his career with two seasons as an Eagle backing up Seth Joyner. The one year that Harris was injured for the seasons (1985) just happened to be the year the Bears won the Super Bowl, he vowed hed get a chance to play it that game before he retired, and luckily it did happen before he did. Last season he was a member of the Super Bowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles.

Info: A three-time Pro Bowl selection signed with the Browns as a Plan B free agent in 1990. He finished the season as the second among active AFC players in interceptions with 37. Clayborn was a solid cornerback for the Patriots for 13 years and thats where hell likely find his claim to fame in the future. Its sad to see a stalwart veteran like Clayborn leave. In real life Clayborn stuck around for the 1991 season with the Browns before retiring after an injury in the 1st game of the season that kept him out all year, enticing his decision to retire.

Info: Eric Wright played cornerback for the San Francisco 49ers from 1981 to 1990. During that time he went to two Pro Bowls (1984 and 1985) as well as partook in the teams 3 Super Bowl victories, earning himself a ring for each. The best season of Wrights career was one of his pro-bowl less years when in 1983 he had 7 interceptions, and returned 2 of them back for touchdowns.

Info: Mike Harden is a very underrated linebacker that was a key to much of the Broncos success in the mid 1980s. Specifically his 1984-1986 seasons where Harden hit his peak with 17 interceptions and 4 touchdowns in that 3 year span at the Strong Saftey position. Harden spent the final two years of his career with the Raiders, last season garnering 50 tackles and 3 interceptions. Many were surprised by Hardens decision to retire at only 31 years old, but he has made his decision.

Info Pat Leahy has been kicking for a long time in the league, 17 years to be exact. And in real life he even squeaked out the 1991 season before deciding to call it quits at (the then age) of 41. Leahy was never considered and amazing kicker. He only really had three decent years from 1986 through 1988 where he had an 80+ field goal percentage. Otherwise he spent 9 out of the first 10 years of his career under 70%, including a 54.5% rookie year. Leahy also missed a decent amount of extra points over the years as well, 27 to be exact.

1991 NFL Draft Top 10 Prospects

Note: Alright we're going to change this up from reality. Instead of say Dan McGwire being the #1 QB drafted for example, the #1 rated QB will be who turned out to be #1 in real life, Brett Favre. This is so those players will at least be up there in the Madden reality. Otherwise guys like Tom Brady etc would never amount to anything in Madden because 7th rounders aren't rated well.

Chargers and Redskins Expected to Splash in Free Agency
AP - The San Diego Chargers and the Washington Redskins should improve for this upcoming season because they are fully expecting to make their own splashes in the free agent market this off-season. Both the Chargers and Redskins have over $15 million in cap space. Although this is partly due to the fact that San Diego is allowing QB Mark Vlasic, LE, Lee Williams, WR Quinn Early, and FS Vencie Glenn all test the free agency markets, despite the outstanding 1990 season the Chargers had. Meanwhile the Washington Redskins had just made some very smart contract decisions in the previous seasons that have left them looking. So far there are already a few free agents visiting both teams and playing with the idea of signing with them.

The San Diego Chargers have had numerous vistors already, namely the veteran Patriots quarterback, Marc Wilson, who just had his greatest NFL season at the age of 33. This is heating up even more speculation that Vlasic will not re-sign with San Diego despite what he did for the team. The Chargers are also entertaining the likes of former 49ers tackle, Bubba Paris, and ex-Packers linebacker, who had an amazing 1990 campaign, Tim Harris. At the same position as Harris Van Waiters was seen canoodling in the park with Charger management along with Joe Mott. Veteran free saftey, Felix Wright recently aquired a phone call from the Chargers general manager which is also sparking rumors that even Vencie Glenn will not return. Meahwhile at strong saftey, argueable, one of the best free agent players available, Thane Gash recently returned from his outing in San Diego and said he was very impressed with what he saw, and felt it would be a major step up from Cleveland.

At the same time the Washington Redskins were certainly not turning a blind eye to free agents as they welcomed many key players with open arms. Veteran backup quarterback Jeff Kemp was given a visit to potentially play behind Mark Rypien due to their release of Stan Humprhies. Meanwhile Roger Craig was seen in town kicking around the idea of signing with the Redskins after his surprise release by the 49ers. Argueable the best available wide receiver, Roy Green, was seen eating on the Redskins dime at a local high-profile diner. Pro bowl defensive tackle, Keith Millard was also visiting the Redskins, his 3rd team in 3 weeks (Packers & Bills). The best linebacker in free agency, Eugene Lockheart was also enjoying the local San Diego beaches recently. The Redskins want a right outside linebacker and brought both John Grimsley and Bobby Houston in as their guests of honor, with Vencie Glenn hopping across the country as well.

All in all the Chargers and Redskins have been very busy entertaining the league's best available players. Although the free agency period is just beginning, and with the upcoming NFL Draft the decisions that both teams make could drastically change, only time will tell.

                          1991 NFL Draft - Round 1

Best Pick: 17th - Bengals - FS - Aeneas Williams
Williams dropped far to the 17th overall pick in the 1991 NFL Draft. But the Bengals were certainly happy to receive him. Williams is the future at saftey for the Bengals, and there's no doubt that he will succeed in the NFL.

Worst Pick: 27th - Oilers - RE - Robert Young
While Robert Young is not a bad pick, he was projected to be a late 2nd rounder. That being said the Oilers left many better players in more pressing positions on the board when they selected Young. These aren't the kinds of moves that a defending AFC Champion Oilers need to make if they want to get back there again this year.

Info: Well the 1991 first round was surprising as the first two picks saw players go to the real teams that they went to in real life (even if Farve was actually a 2nd rounder to the Falcons in RL). Brett Favre, the highest rated QB coming out of college was picked #1 overall, and Jets linebacker Mo Lewis taken at #2. Herman Moore was picke up by the Bears at #5 and that should be interesting to see how they develop as the Bears never really had any solid receivers until 3-4 years from now with the aquistions of both Curtis Conway and Jeff Graham. Ricky Watters was snagged by the Rams at #8 and it was actually a horrible pick as Madden's draft logic started to enter. The Rams have two runningbacks rated higher than Watters (C.Warner, C.Gary) so there's doubt that Watters will see much, if any, playing time in his rookie season, possibly stunting his progression. Eric Swann was a steal at 84 Ovr for a #9 pick Cowboys offer. Russell Maryland will really help develop an already studly Saints defense. Paul Justin will actually end up battling with Jeff Hostetler for the #1 quarterback spot for the Giants due to Phil Simms retirement. Justin's real life NFL career was short lived as he backed up with the Bengals and Colts before fading into obscurity. Darryll Lewis will be a solid future corner for the Lions along with teammate Bruce McNorton. Harvey Williams was picked up by the Bills to backup for Thurman Thomas. Meanwhile Leonard Russell has a good shot at starting in Green Bay as they still aren't sold on a runningback. Eric Turner will, at the moment, be starting at the saftey spot for San Diego Chargers barring any free agent aquisitions as they've released Vencie Glenn. Meanwhile the final pick of the 1st round of the 1991 NFL Draft went to the world champion Philadelphia Eagles as they selected a (at the time) young star cornerback, Merton Hanks.

                            1991 NFL Draft - Round 2

                            Best Pick: 16th (44th) - Chiefs - TE - Ben Coates
Ben Coates is the most highly touted tight end to ever enter into the NFL. People are already talking about him as one of the greatest to play before he has even touched an official NFL football. The Chiefs were elated to find that he had lasted until their second round selection, and snagged the opportunity to bring a new face to their offense.

                            Worst Pick: 1st/2nd/6th/26th - K - John Kasay/Richie Andrews/Robbie Keen/Jeff Emanuel
Horrible draft decisions by the Falcons, Jets, Cardinals, and Chargers saw them all quickly select the only available kickers...in the 2nd round. The hardest blow was the San Diego Chargers slecting Jeff Emanuel (58 Ovr) with other quality players like Nolan Harrison/Ed McCaffrey/Jake Reed/Todd Lyght/Marcus Robertson, etc available on the board. There is no reason that any of these teams should've selected kickers this early in the draft, even if John Kasay could progress nicely for the Falcons, it still doesn't warrent a 2nd round 1st pick selection when there are many other pressing needs.

Info: I was once again disappointed in Madden's draft logic as 4 kickers all went (in real life only 3 kickers were taken so everybody after Robbie Keen will keep there madden gen. names). Howard Griffith was a solid pickup for the Vikings that should help greatly in the running game as his blocking skills will help develop a returning from injury Herschel Walker. Henry Jones was a steal for the Raiders this late, as he was projected to be a 1st rounder. Roman Phifer will attempt to fill in the void left by a released Eugene Lockhart. Meanwhile the New York Giants may have found their future wide receiver threat as they picked up Keenan McCardell in the middle of the 2nd. Ben Coates was an absolute steal for the Chiefs, however their run-heavy offense may not let him see as many passes as he would like. Bob Christian was a solid selection by the Detroit Lions as they now have a true fullback to help advance Barry Sanders even more. The Bills are surprisingly loading up on runningbacks as they select Ricky Ervins who will likely play 3rd string behind Thurman Thomas and 1st round pick, Harvey Williams. Bill Musgrave will be the Oilers new 3rd string quarterback in a selection that most Houston fans bawked at. Meanwhile the Eagles ended the round with their selection of defensive tackle Nolan Harrison to play behind Clyde Simmons and Jerome Brown.

                              1991 NFL Draft - Round 3

                              Best Pick: 23rd - (69th) - Bills - WR - Jeff Graham
With the retirement of James Lofton the Bills are going to need somebody to fill his void, and they think they've got it in Jeff Graham. What makes this pick so good is that they managed to get a wide receiver of his caliber this late in the draft. With McCafferey, Thigpen, and Reed all taken before the Bills held out and got who they think is the best of all of them.

                              Worst Pick: 4th - (60th) - Vikings - QB - Pat O'Hara
The Vikings do indeed need help at the quarterback spot as Rich Gannon and Wade Wilson didn't exactly tear up the charts. Pat O'Hara could be a servicable quarterback in the future (70 OVR) but the fact that he was taken 12 picks before Browning Nagle to has much better skills (77 Ovr) leaves this pick looking as bad as it was.

Info: The remaining middle linebackers pretty much didn't contribute much in the NFL, but the madden ratings may change that for them as the Jets went linebacker again, this time with Derrick Brownlow who came out at 76 overall. The Bears took yet another wide receiver to add to their surprising and growing corps with Herman Moore. Todd Lyght could be the future at corner for the Saints as they need some help there. Meanwhile the kicker fiasco continues as the Seahawks selected a horrible 52 ovr kicker with the 22nd pick in the 3rd round with quality players like Ted Washington, Shawn Jefferson, Michael Jackson, Andrew Glover, Aaron Craver, and Phil Hanson just picks away from being taken, still on the board.

                                1991 NFL Draft - Round 4

                                Best Pick: 16th - (100th) - Chiefs - RE - Phil Hansen
Info: Phil Hansen should help the Chiefs defensive line out in the future. Taken in the middle of the 4th makes Hansen a steal. He has all the skills and tools to be a solid defensive lineman in the future

                                Worst Pick: 24th - (108th) - Lions - CB - Darryl Wren
Info: The Lions went ahead and took Darryl Wren in the 4th round a lot earlier than they should have. Not only will Wren probably not pan out a significant corner in the league, but there were still far better corners available for the picking on the board as well.

Info: The bad drafting CPU continues as the punters went this time. Two who were in the 50's. However there were some solid pickups like Ted Washington by the Dolphins. The Dolphins have significantly impacted their defensive line in this draft with the selectiongs of Michael Sinclaire, Moe Gardner, and Ted Washington. If they all pan out anywhere near to their NFL success they will be the best DL in the league. The Vikings added a solid receiver in Shawn Jefferson who should help them out in the future, however the Raiders picked up a slightly better Michael Jackson who will hopefully progress nicely. The Rams wnet the tight end route picking up Andrew Glover. Meanwhile Nick Bell was picked up by the Giants to backup their potential new starter Rodney Hampton. Andy Harmon will be a solid pickup for the Steelers defensive tackle spot, but will be their 3rd string. Raghib Ismail was a big steal for the Bills that late in the draft. His blazing speed could be a difference maker if he can progress his receiving abilities.
