The show Dexter has driven off course a few times...Season 3 is the first time. In retrospect, killing off Doakes wasn't good for business. It basically gave them shit to work with in Season 3. Season 4 is an aberration, seemingly, with season 5 + 6 more like 3 than anything else. They lucked into the epicness of John Lithgow. If it were anyone else in the role of Trinity, perhaps, 4 is similar to that of 3, 5, 6 because the character ends up being hokey like Smits and Styles.
I actually liked the idea of what Colin Hanks was presenting, I just think the writing failed him. The story was good, but not executed properly.
With the kicker at the end of Season 6, it basically leaves Dexter in the hands of its worst character to drag it to watchability.
Dexter has basically lost its soul. It lost its grit. Even the main character is a far cry from what it used to be. Now, its basically Michael C Hall playing Michael C Hall instead of this character, Dexter.
