Isaak's character was good...it is something Dexter hasn't quite faced...a legitimate assassin.

One of Dexter's many problems is, the show doesn't use everything as the proper vehicle to get to an end. Isaak, after this season, really had no point. The pyromaniac, really had no point. Its just a string of constant big bads and episodic bads that are featured with no real meaning to the end game. I figured by Season 7 there wouldn't be a need for episodic kills or bads that lead to no where...that is the shit you do in Season 1 and in early seasons while you flesh out the main characters. And NONE of these guys really do anything to progress Deb's storyline.

I think the show was destined to reach this point. A show about a serial killer who kills serial killers and never leaves his city is kind of bound to reach a stale point sooner or later. I mean how many Trinity or Ice Truck killers can one city have? It's not like major serial killers are a common thing.

The writing has gotten lazy post Season 4...and looking back, Season 4 remains epic, but it looks like more and more it was a vehicle driven by Lithgow's amazing performance moreover a group effort.

Dexter lost its way a few times in the series...

-Killing off Doakes was one as it took away his FOIL.
-Having him starting to "relate" to people was another one...started in Season 3 with Prado and has been a feature of every season since. This has essentially taken away a lot of the charm Dexter's character had in Seasons 1 and 2.
-Continuous, legitimate love interests. Rita was his mask...every since, its been very easy to put him together with a chick and have Dexter fall in love...silly.

Season finale was as intense as it gets, it's always great watching dexter backed down into a corner. MCH played it perfectly

That's definitely what it seems like, they're really back tracking from the "season 8 will be the last" statements they made a year or so ago.
