You also have to take into account this is NBC. Right now they are the weakest of the big 4 right now. They struggle to have high ratings on even there most popular programs. Chuck got renewed for a 4th season despite season three only averaging 6 million a episode. They are struggling bigtime and The Event even at 7 million viewers would be a win for them. But viewers are not as important as demographic. If they can stay around 3 million there they should be perfectly fine, but if it slips to 2 or below is when it becomes a problem. Castle, despite having 11 million viewers every week, almost got canceled because its demographic slipped a bit for a few weeks.

If you guys want a sci-fi fix on network TV check out No Ordinary Family. The pilot for that show was much better.

The scope of the show is way too big... We got shit disappearing, bad aliens, good aliens, kidnapping, skinny ass women with no tits or ass in bakinis, cliff diving, cover ups, flashbacks, scubadiving, riptides, flashforwards, genocide, Asian Jack Bauer, plane crashes, cruiseships, super powers, drinking, hijackings, Alaska, Mexico, Miami, arizona, Washington dc, oval office, blacksicans, assassination plots, cover ups, massive deaths... All in the first two episodes and NONE IF THIS SHIT IS THE FUCKIN EVENT!
I kept yelling at my TV "ATLEAST SHOW ME A DECENT PAIR OF TITTYS, OR GET THE FUCK OUTTA HERE."

The demo for The Event was 2.9. It's total viewers and demo numbers were 3rd for its timeslot out of the big 3, and by a significant gap.
Watched 2nd ep of The Event last night. Gotta admit, when the whole alien angle was finally admitted I was like' "not this type of shit ," but the episode kept me interested. I'll continue to watch, however, they must be very careful not to take this storyline down the path of too much cheesy alien bullshit. People like paranormal and alien stuff if done like X-Files or Fringe, but if you go down the road of some lame, far fetched alien shit, this show will die in a glorious fireball explosion.Comment

I feel NBC will give the Event a pass for going head to head with the bulk of Monday Night Football. Ratings accross the board were down this past Monday because Packers/Bears was the 9th highest viewed MNF game of all timeComment

The reality is, live viewership is still the #1 piece of data as to whether a show stays or goes. DVR/torrents/etc. that show a strong delayed viewing audience are nice to see by network heads, but they still want people watching live events where they cannot fast forward through commercials, these views are shared by the advertisers paying for said commercials. A few shows in the past ten years succeeded in getting another season due to fan uproar/campaigns (Judging Amy, Jericho, Moonlight, Chuck...), but they never got any better. Chuck's numbers are abysmal so far and it should have never been renewed for this season. It will not see a full season, let alone another season. It will be lucky to make it to January.
However that does not necessarily mean CSI is more popular then LOST. IMO I bet more people know who Jack/Locke/Kate/Sawyer/Sayid are then the cast of CSI Las Vegas.Comment

While I see your point, it's still from the Network side of view. Of course the more LIVE viewership equals more ad $$. Which in the end decides how long a show will run.
