I think I read it over the course of a month or two and also read 3-4 other books in that time, too.

Now be prepared to drag through the first 600 pages of A Feast for Crows.
After churning through the first three books in six weeks, I'm gonna take a break until after S2 of the show is done airing.

That's why this series is awesome. They take a character of severe importance and just do that.

Rudi you will soon grow numb to such surprises. It just becomes par for the course after a certain point.

I actually liked A Feast for Crows. I don't think it is nearly as bad as some would say it is, but it definitely starts slowly, and is a bit jarring to know that there are characters you just won't hear from until the next book (I can see why those who read it upon release would probably be furious though, considering how long they waited between 3 and 4, and then how long the wait was between 4 and 5). Still, the book ends strong I think, and there are questions/plots raised in it that I am then sad to not see resolved in book 5.

Its not bad as a book, its just not on the level the first 3 books are. The 5th book is only marginally better than the 4th too. Martin needs to step his game up.

It would also be nice if he could get book 6 out in less than 7 years.

Meh, I don't really mind if they aren't "as good" as long as he eventually fucking tells me what happens. At this point he has me by the balls, so I'll keep reading.

I know it's gonna be a slog to get through but as long as book four has at least a couple of nice reveals by the end, I'll be satisfied. I'm as into the back story as I am the current story to be honest. He's created such a rich world that even the seemingly petty gossip starts to get interesting.

A good example of that is in A Clash of Kings, when the Reeds are telling Bran a story. At first I was like, damn, this is a pretty boring chapter, nothing really advancing the plot, just more of Bran sitting around listening to stories ... but then I realized what the story is about, and how important it is to the events of the books.

                      Not to mention ...

what it might imply about present characters, particularly who a certain character's parents might be ...

Oh definitely. I honestly need to read through the books again because there is stuff I've forgotten or probably missed the first time. Its been over a year for me. Books 4 and 5 just didn't advance the plot enough for me.

In March 2012, the author said to have roughly 200 pages completed at that time and expected the book to be finished in two or three years.

Release years: 1996, 1998, 2000, 2005, 2011, 2014-15(?), and the final book looks like somewhere near 2020. The show will catch up to the books before we know it.

Harry Potter's 7 books were released over 10 years.

The hell does Martin do all day. Write the damn thing. He has to have outlines and stuff. Also, I'll be very surprised if he finishes this series in only 7 books. They'll both have to top 1,000 pages.

The guy looks like a damn hobbit. I bet he has trouble writing/typing on normal people things being such a small creature.
