The problem is, it's not the market value for Werth. If you're the Yankees you can afford to pay well above market value. They outbidding themselves, plain and simple. Everything I've read the next best deal for Werth was the Red Sox for 4 years and the Nats go 7?!

You basically have to get the production he gave you this year (a career year at age 31) for the course of this deal to even remotely make it worth the $18 million per year he's getting.

The Nationals may be in a position 4-5 years down the line where Harper ends up being a bust, Strasburg is never healthy and 60% of their payroll budget is taken up by a sub 100 OPS+ corner outfielder. That's a very plausible situation and one that can really hurt a franchise.

      LOL Nats...

I doubt he's going to be as good now he doesn't have Howard, Utley and the like around him...he was a late bloomer...this contract is horrific though.

One of the worst contracts in the history of baseball. No hyperbole. One of the worst ever.

Stat of the Century: Werth will receive more money ($126M) than all of the free agents the Nationals/Expos have signed COMBINED in the last 20 years ($122.1M).

        L-O-L

My biggest gripe, is this throws the entire market into a whirl. Crawford should get $200M if we are paying on a Werth scale. I shudder on what it will take for the Reds to keep people like Bruce and Votto long term.

The Phills offered Werth 4yr/$66M. Who exactly were the Nats bidding against?

Seriously, fuck the Nats. I hope they win about 50 games.

I read that other MLB GMs are LIVID at the Nationals for this.

Don't forget Jason Kendall in bad contract lore.

(Luis Castillo/Oliver Perez, too...although not AS bad as those mentioned above)

I lol'd. It's gonna get really messy with Crawford, he's gonna demand all that money and no team is gonna give it to him. He'll end up getting pissed off and accepting a lower contract and demand a better one after one year.

Brutal deal. Werth is a good enough player, but 126M, shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

                  :fear:

According to Jayson Stark, The Nationals offer on Werth was so far above everyone else that Boras didn't even ask other interested teams if they wanted to match it.

Yeah, when even Scott Boras is shocked at how ridiculous your contract offer was and doesn't even TRY to get you more money... you've really reached the pinnacle.

Pujols, Adrian Gonzalez' extension, Prince Fielder... have fun guys. Just glad the White Sox got Adam Dunn before this Werth deal.

Werth is now tied for the 14th richest baseball contract in the history of the game...

And now the Jason Bay contract is not lookin' too shabby (concussion not withstanding). Werth is about 5 months older...comparable stats (Bay's 2010 was a joke)...Werth gets 7 years, $126 million (he'll be 38 in the final year of the deal)...Bay now has a 3 year deal worth $48 mil (plus a team option/buy out fourth year).
