          w2b, to your point, most of Prado's WAR last season was tied to an absurd UZR in LF and an outlier season on the basepaths. He ran more than ever and put up insane defensive metrics. I'd be curious if him logging some games at SS helped his positional boost a bit too, but I'm not sure how partial time at a position gets calculated.

          WAR is goofy, but we knew that.

              The position adjustments assume 162 games played at a position, so Prado's 11 starts at shortstop would only be worth a fraction of the standard 7.5 run adjustment for players at that position. Looking at only last year, the difference between Upton and Prado's positional value is negligible. Only one or two runs. But it becomes more significant when you start comparing career WAR, like Warner did. Upton has played his entire career in RF, while Prado has 2.5 seasons spent at 2B, SS, and 3B.

                One of the best things about this offseason is that Steve Berthiaume is now the "Voice of the Diamondbacks" and his twitter is full of homerisms. It's pretty funny to follow all the crap he puts out there:

                Great read here from @mccoveychron who writes #Dbacks are bigger threat to #SFGiants NL West title than #Dodgers http://sbn.to/V0rnau
                @BertDbacks
                RT/@JackMagruder: Prado last 3 years: .290/.339/.428; 157 extra-base hits, 193 RBIs. Upton: .281/.361/.469; 167 extra-base hits, 224 RBIs
                @BertDbacks
                Still not sold on #Dbacks Trevor Bauer trade? Read this from @BerniePleskoff: RT/ In time, Didi's talents will shine. http://atmlb.com/Xjsjo5
                Of course none of it is anything he's writing himself, but still.

                  Funny how people keep directly comparing Prado and Upton and ignore the contract status component. Prado is obviously a very good player, somewhat undervalued in some ways, but nonetheless he is a very good player who is seeking a long term deal worth about $12 MM in AAV. The Braves did not feel he was worth that, so they swapped him for a player who is better, younger and under team control for longer. He also happens to fill a need and make roughly the same amount per year Prado was asking for.

                  This move helps the Braves in 2014 and '15 more than it does this upcoming season, because Upton is affordable and still has a ton of room to get better. This is a player just entering his prime years who is one season removed from a top-5 MVP finish.

                  Prado was my favorite Brave and I am heartbroken over his departure, but this is the type of deal you have to make if it falls into your lap.

                        Don't worry. You can sign yourself another former Notre Dame football player in Manti Te'o. I hear he likes to play catcher in his free time.

                            The fielding components are different. It's also constantly being tweaked.

                            WAR, the only stat where the parameters are in a constant state of flux, arbitrary values are used in the formula, and where you can find two completely different sets of results.

                            We should probably use a stat like that to base our MVP & HOF arguments!

                              Tired of this strawman. You didn't need WAR to make a definitive argument for Trout last year. He was the best all around player, hands down.
