I don't think anyone was doubting that the recordings were authentic but it appears the NBA lawyers wanted to make sure in advance of the press conference they have scheduled this afternoon.
Report: NBA Confirms Sterling’s Audio is Real & Not Altered

Anything less than a lifetime suspension or vote to kick Donald Sterling out of the NBA would be unacceptable.
The NBA met with V. Stiviano and her attorney to verify that the Sterling audio is real and they came away convinced it was Sterling on the tape and it wasn’t altered in any way.
NBA lawyer David Anders and another NBA lawyer went to the law office of Mac Nehoray Monday afternoon. Stiviano was also there for the purpose of authenticating the audio.
We’re told there was NO doubt by anyone the recording is the real deal. The NBA lawyers heard the 15 minutes that have been made public, but not the remaining 45. And we’re told … based on conversations along with analysis … they’re satisfied about authenticity.
The NBA has scheduled a press conference for 2pm EST, we will all be watching.
