    Kicker Beats DB in Race

    Video Interview

Buehler Beats DeAngelo Smith In A Race
Posted by jellis at 8/18/2009 5:56 PM CDT on truebluefanclub.com

OK, to bo fair, the 50-yard duel came after practice. DeAngelo Smith had been running for the better part of two hours, and fellow rookie David Buehler had been mostly on the sideline, chilling.

Still. We're talking about a kicker against a defensive back. And Buehler didn't just beat him - he smoked him. Had him by at least three yards, holding out him arms the last few strides because he knew he had beaten him.

"There was a lot of trash-talking in the locker room," Buehler said. "DeAngelo's pretty confident in his speed. I knew I was fast, so I decided to challenge him.

"I just got in the locker room today and I felt like racing somebody. All these guys talk about how fast they are, and I just wanted to compete."

Buehler on Tuesday showed a little bit of why the Cowboys drafted him in the fifth round, uncanny athleticism for a kicker. He ran a 4.62 in the 40-yard dash back in April, and had 25 reps on the 225-pound bench press.

As he crossed the finish line Buehler threw off his jersey and circled around the end zone for a half victory lap, his teammates either raising their eyebrows mesmorized, or doubling over in laughter.

Smith couldn't help but smile as he tried to walk off the field, knowing he had to face the music from a herd of media, equally surprised by what they had seen.

"I was talking trash," Smith said. "He beat me fair and square . . . He had fresh legs and everything, but there's no excuse, I should be winning anyway. We're going to race again, though."

Smith had better hope he wins the rematch.

wow, from what I heard about Buehler he's like the million dollar baby. Like he's was made in a lab or something.... He said in the interview he ran a 4.5 40 and he's built like a safety

it's his civilian identity... Super man is a lame, spider man is a photographer who stalks red heads, batman was rich because of a trust fund, but majority of super people have lame civilian identities lol.

I believe Buehler was a LB in high school and USC briefly messed around with him at fullback and safety.

Guys always been in pretty good shape and a pretty good athlete, obviously

I thought D'Angelo Smith handled that with a lot of class.
Not sure if this kicker will win the battle for his job. The Dallas kicker was pretty solid last year.
Maybe the backup kicker can be their wildcat QB.

Sounds like a reasonable plan. I still say the Bills need to use Moorman in the wildcat lol.

Maybe they can move him to RB so the NFL finally has a white one.
Best reason to have a license.

Bills punter Brian Moorman is an excellent athlete who did really well (finished first or second) in some NFL athletics contest 2-3 off-seasons back, and Steelers punter Daniel Sepulveda was recruited as a LB out of high school and had a 40 time around 4.6 - which is quite good for a player his size (6'3 230lbs). Then there are those Aussie imports, who are mostly former Aussie rules / rugby players - I can guarantee those guys are as tough as nails, fit, and athletic. Therefore, I'm not completely surprised a kicker / punter beat a DB in a foot race - some of them are very good athletes.
