Ok that might've been wishful thinking. They can be middle of the pack.

The Raiders generate a very good pass rush though. They were 13th in the league in sacks last year despite having one of the leagues worst rush defenses and teams doing nothing but run on them all game.

The safeties are horrible but there is talent there. (Huff and Branch can run 4.3 fourties and Michael Mitchell also has good speed and can hit hard. Then Hiram Eugene played more and more as the season went on last year and played better.) The Safeties are still horrible but there is talent there.

The the linebackers are soft against the run but are very good against the pass.
Most overrated stat in football is 40times imho .

        Al Davis gets schooled again.

Seymour is headed towards the wrong side of 30.. he's been injured a lot the last two seasons.. he's going to be overpaid. The Raiders, barring a miracle (i.e. Al Davis dying) will likely still suck in 2011 and this pick becomes a Top 10 pick for the Pats who are slowly revamping their D with a lot of young talent.

for everyone saying Seymour is the best Dlineman on New England...he's really not. Seymour/BB have never really been on the same page, and Seymour is really only useful for taking up 2 defenders, something which Vince Wilfork already does. As mentioned earlier, Seymour is gonna turn 30 this season, and we weren't going to bring him back anyways.

Jarvis Green, Myron Pryor, Ron Brace, and Derrick Burgess can all spell at that position, and now we pick up a surefire top 10 talent(sorry raider fans)...i love the move. It sets aside 3.3 million to get a deal with the best player on the defensive line..wilfork...done for the long term.

In acquiring a first-round draft choice in 2011, the Patriots appear to have the NFL’s uncertain labor forecast in mind. That could be the first year with a rookie cap. The economics of top first-round draft choices currently make those choices undesirable, but with a cap, the value of those picks could skyrocket.

another good point from the article hadley posted, if in fact the rookie cap is made Al Davis will indeed be schooled by BB.

Just from the standpoint of watching the games this past couple years, Seymour has been very meh, while Wilfork I recall seeing more in the backfield stuffing runs and whatnot.

Seymour has been a product of hype. When he actually is on the field and healthy he's more of a run stuffer than a defensive end. Alas they have been using him out of the 34 which he fits into much better, so maybe he is a good pass rusher in a 4-3, but Seymour is not going to wow you, but he is usually hurt.

BB is going to go out as one of the best ever. Just adding to the legend...

Goodell needs to step in and stop this. The Patriots continually rape the Raiders in these deals.

There's no way in hell Seymour is gonna re-sign in Oakland next year. And even if there was, is that chance at it worth a #1 pick? Have these people lost their fucking minds?

I hate how the Patriots are constantly three steps ahead of the game.

most people consider Seymour to be elite...at least people i come across on the internet. I think madden ratings have something to do with that

That is the primary role of 3-4 DE - to play the run and eat up blockers.

yes i know this, which is why i said it. The Patriots are going to be playing more 4-3 this year than 3-4 i'm hearing, which actually makes sense because we're thin at linebacker. Seymour becomes less valuable now.

I think he has enough skills and size to help the Raiders at DT or DE - where ever they chose to line him up. Regardless, as I initially posted, I think this is a great trade long term for the Pats and possibley a terrible one for the Raiders. However, any one who thinks the Pats aren't losing something right now are being totally homeristic. While I'm sure Jarvis Green and who ever else they play at Seymour's spot will be adequate but I doubt they'll make as big of an impact.

                      i agree completely.

Not as bad a trade as I originally screamed "WTF".

Seymour is getting old and is falling apart with injuries. To me, this move is to secure Vince Wilfork as a Patriot, which is much more important. Plus, hopefully this pick turns out to be great value.

lol yeah len, redsox34 actually called me and told me the news and my first reaction was what the fuck is going on?

the team looks so different now.

                          Cassel-Gone
                          Seymour-Gone
                          Bruschi-Gone
                          Hobbs-Gone
                          Harrison-Gone

                          it's strange.

I gotta say, with the moves they've made in the last few weeks it seems like they know something we don't.

                              I support this deal 100%

You can't win it all every year, clearly. But moves like this will maintain the Patriots amongst the leagues elite yearly.

Our DL is still looking pretty with what we have, not that Seymour won't be missed, so a 1st round pick (which is over paying for him) is plenty awesome if you ask me.
