Rumor: Pitt Joining the Big Ten

No one in Illinois cares about Illinois-Indiana really. The Eric Gordon shit was short lived and stupid. Illinois rivalries they care about are with Mizzou, Iowa, and to a lesser extent Northwestern.Comment
-
Yeah but you could say that about Penn State/Michigan and Penn State/Ohio State as well. So either way there are going to be problems with certain "rivalry" games.Comment
-
They already play Big Ten style basketball, so why not? Plus this will bring the Penn St/Pitt rivalry more into play.
As long as the backyard brawl isn't effected, I don't see the problem, other than now the Big East will have to go raid some other mid major conference for a member, and will continue to dilute their football membership and further put their BCS auto bid in jeopardy.Comment

I'm thinking they become the Big 12 and, maybe, the Big XII becomes the Big XIV
So, Pac-12:
North-Central
Oregon State University
Stanford University
University of California, Berkley
University of Oregon
University of Washington
Washington State University
South
Arizona State University
Boise State University*
Brigham Young University*
University of Arizona
University of California, Los Angeles
University of Southern California
New Big XII (XIV) Doing it East-West would've kept Ok St and OU in the same conference as the Texas schools, so we're doing it another way...)
Central
Iowa State University
Colorado University
Kansas University
Oklahoma State University
University of Kansas
University of Nebraska
University of Oklahoma
Exterior/Texas (only Mizzou and Utah are not located in Texas, hahahaha)
Baylor University
University of Missouri
Texas A&M University
Texas Tech University
Texas Christian University*
University of Texas
University of Utah*Comment

There's going to be no real good way to split up the Big 10 regionally and keep the football rivalries equal. It will be interesting to see what they do.Comment
-
In all honesty I say go with
West:
Minnesota
Wisconsin
Iowa
Illinois
Northwestern
Purdue
East:
Indiana
Michigan
Michigan St
Ohio St
Penn St
Pitt
Fuck it.
Enjoy the ride in the East.Last edited by FirstTimer; 01-31-2010, 06:22 PM.Comment

On another note if this does happen it will be interesting to see if NCAA11 can get it into the game in time.Comment

Texas has wanted into the Pac-10 for some time now. They had been up for voting for membership, but the Pac-10 requires unanimous approval and Stanford voted against it for some reason, so it never happened.
Wiki FTW.Comment

Moving right along, they could do the cross-division games thing the ACC and SEC do to keep the rivalries intact.
Why the hell would they do that? Is that accurate info? I mean, wiki's good for some stuff, but bad for a lot of other stuff...Last edited by Fox1994; 01-31-2010, 06:32 PM.Comment

Odd. What the hell would be the motivation for that?Comment

First, the Longhorns looked west, to the Pac-10. Berdahl found it appealing that seven of the 10 schools in the Pac-10 were members of the American Association of Universities, a group comprised of the nation's top 62 research universities.
Distance was the main drawback. The University of Arizona, located in Tucson, was the nearest Pac-10 school to Austin — and still 788 miles away. Eight of the 10 schools were in the Pacific Time Zone, meaning a two-hour time gap with most of Texas.
"Texas wanted desperately the academic patina that the Pac 10 yielded," recalls Berdahl, who went on to serve as chancellor at Pac-10 member California-Berkeley. "To be associated with UCLA, Stanford and Cal in academics was very desirable."
Still, expansion in the Pac-10 depended on unanimous approval of the member schools. And Stanford, which had long battled UT in athletics as well as academics, objected. For UT, the way west never materialized.Don't Sit Down 'Cause I've Moved Your ChairComment

it wouldnt happen til 2012 maybe 2013. Pitt as part of its (rumored) obligation to the BIg East has to provide notice 27 months in advance of it intent to leave the conference. this rumor is getting circulated at one of the michigan state fans message board.Comment

Pretty sure Big East will be a lower tier conference now and lose their BCS bid
I would bet a lot that it goes to not just a single conference but the best mid-major team in the nation every year.
I think we could see the Sun Belt or Conference USA get some teams from the Big East.
Im more interested to see how this effects basketball to be honest if at allComment
