No, in 2013 we should have had a first round pick. Because in 2012, we should have drafted Ryan Tannehill (like Shanny wanted), and Janoris Jenkins. Then in 2013, they should have taken Lane Johnson, DJ Fluker, Justin Pugh, or Kyle Long. And then in 2014, they should have taken Zack Martin, Clinton-Dix, or Jake Matthews. But now, they wanted to win right away and gave it away for Griffin.
That was my reason to not pull Griffin. Struggling now doesn't matter. Even struggling next year doesn't matter. What is the long term plan to get back in to the playoffs? McCoy doesn't help with that, as winning one more game (or maybe two) doesn't help this team. The locker room argument is bullshit. The team quit in the Colts game. The Oline didn't give a shit. The receivers quit on routes. The secondary looked like 6 guys they plucked from the parking lot an hour before kickoff. So pulling Griffin did nothing to help Gruden retain the locker room.
Bruce Allen needs to go. He'd be a great president. Handshaking, donations, alumni stuff, charity events. But get him away from football decisions. Hire an actual GM (wonder if we could lure Brown back). Then have the new GM and Gruden go to Allen and explain a long term plan for success. How they're going to the build through the draft. How they'll concentrate on signing younger free agents they plan on being here for the next three years. Then have all three go to Snyder and explain that this is what needs to happen and that there are no quick fixes.
Then start it back up. Play the young guys for the rest of the season Cousins or Griffin, don't care. Robinson and Grant get more reps at receiver. Rotate the young offensive linemen in. Get the young RBs some work. Same for the young defensive linemen. Treat this like evaluation. While we're at it, you may as well trade DJax in the offseason. He's not going to like a rebuilding year. 3rd round pick for him.
Then the draft. It's littered with quality offensive linemen. Redskins will finish with a top 5 pick. Say they have the 4th pick. Take Peat or trade back in to the low to mid first round and get Collins or Scherff. Take that extra pick (probably a second rounder), combine it with that third for DJax and get back in to the back end of the first round. Take Cann or Matias to play guard, Dismukes at center, or possibly a guy like Jordan Phillips to play nose tackle. With that second rounder, take the best offensive lineman that you have drafted already, center being the priority.
Now in free agency, there are going to be all kinds of awesome skill position playuers. Suh, Houston, Thomas, Crabtree, etc. Ignore all of them. Sign Mike Iupati to a nice deal. He’s young and good. Won’t break the banks. That gives you an offensive line of:
LT – Williams
LG – Iupati
C – Dismukes
RG – Open competition
RT – Peat/Collins/Scherff
Also some possibilities for NT in a 3-4 would be Dan Williams, Ahtyba Rubin, or Damon Harrison. Younger guys who play NT in a 3-4 right now and can for the next three or four years. I’m leary of signing safeties to big contracts, and if the Redskins were to trade back, that second round pick might be better spent on a safety.
Regardless, 2015 season will have an offensive line with talent and ability. That way, if Gruden wants to, he can draft his QB in 2016 and that QB can come right in to a nice nest and be able to perform.
