Redskins agreed to terms with RB Larry Johnson on a three-year contract with a max value of $12 million.

Just when you thought the Redskins would make it through the offseason without a head-scratching move. L.J., 30, managed just 3.2 yards per carry last year and has very little burst left entering his age-31 season. We're not ruling out the possibility of Johnson succeeding in Mike Shanahan's zone-blocking system (Reuben Droughns did it), but it isn't likely. He'll compete for carries with Clinton Portis, Anthony Alridge, and most likely a draft pick.

Redskins re-signed OL Will Montgomery to a one-year, $1.176 million contract.

Montgomery drew an original pick tender last week and failed to draw interest at the price of a seventh-round draft pick. He'll return to a backup role if he manages to make the final roster

Albert Haynesworth will show up for the start of the offseason program on Monday despite reports that he's upset about switching to the 3-4.

Haynesworth likely isn't thrilled about being asked to play nose tackle, but he won't miss Mike Shanahan's first organized meeting with the team. Haynesworth will be used all over the line anyway, so this story has likely been overblown already. He's owed an option bonus of $21 million in April.

NFL Network's Mike Lombardi predicts that the Redskins will draft Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen with the No. 4 overall pick.

It's also worth noting that K.C. Joyner, the Football Scientist, is on record as saying Clausen's skill set and decision making offer an even better fit for Mike Shanahan's offense than Jay Cutler. Lombardi's opinion is noteworthy, too, because he worked under Shanahan in Denver. Lombardi expects Shanahan to go with Clausen even if both he and Russell Okung are available..

Clinton Portis, LaRon Landry, and Albert Haynesworth were all in attendance as the Redskins kicked off their offseason program Monday.

The program is not "mandatory," but new coach Mike Shanahan sure made it seem that way for his veterans. Portis is known for avoiding the practice field, so showing up in March is at least a start. Still, we doubt he'll be able to stop his slide down the cliff as he competes for carries with newly signed Larry Johnson and possibly a rookie.

Former Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil predicts that Larry Johnson will "take over the running back position" from Clinton Portis.

The coach who once said Johnson needed to "take the diapers off" now cautions against ruling out a proud player with his back "against the wall." We wouldn't put much stock in Vermeil's opinion here, as he's obviously picturing the 2005-06 version of L.J. who starred for him as opposed to the declining 30-year-old.

Free agent OT Barry Sims is expected to visit with the Redskins on Friday.

The sides have been talking since last week, so there appears to be plenty of interest. Sims is nothing more than a desperate short-term patch if he ends up starting. He's better used in a backup role.

The Redskins will host free agent Joey Porter on Thursday.

Porter's preference is to return home to the west coast, but he needs another team interested so the Cardinals aren't bidding against themselves. The Redskins are moving to a 3-4 defense, so Porter fits from a pure scheme standpoint.

Redskins signed Rex Grossman, formerly of the Texans, to a one-year contract.

Grossman worked with new Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan in Houston last year, where he struggled badly in one relief appearance. Grossman projects as the primary backup to Jason Campbell, ahead of Colt Brennan. The signing will not stop the Skins from drafting a quarterback of the future in April. Dan Orlovsky is now Matt Schaub's backup

ESPN's Matt Mosley says that Colt Brennan's roster spot is in jeopardy now that Rex Grossman is on board.

Brennan was a bigger hit with the fans than he was with the team. The 2008 sixth-round pick out of Hawaii couldn't beat out Todd Collins last season and is undoubtedly behind Grossman now. The Redskins are also expected to draft a quarterback of the future.

Florida QB Tim Tebow has private workouts scheduled with the Bills, Seahawks, Patriots, Browns, and Redskins in the coming weeks.

Initial reports on Tebow's Pro Day workout were mixed, but they're now skewing toward the positive. "From the Senior Bowl to now, the improvement is ridiculous," NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock said. "I was blown away." Tebow's ball now starts from his ear instead of his waste, his footwork was reportedly "flawless," and he's succeeded in shortening his stride.

Per ESPN's Chris Mortensen, Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan had to cut the playbook in half in order for Donovan McNabb to learn it.

It doesn't end there. McNabb reportedly struggles with calling plays in the huddle from the abridged playbook. It's rare that stories of this nature leak out about such high profile quarterbacks, and it's another signal that Shanahan and McNabb won't be working together in the future. As for this season, things look just as murky.

Ryan Torain (hamstring) and Clinton Portis (groin) were both in pads for the Redskins' light practice Monday.

The Skins' plan all along was for Portis to resume practicing in a limited manner this week, though he seems unlikely to be ready for at least another game. Coach Mike Shanahan shed no light on Torain's injury, but it's a good sign that he was able to do anything. The Redskins host Philadelphia in Week 10. If neither can play, Keiland Williams would get the start
