Figured it was time to bump this after our first round selection.

For those wondering, the Redskins were able to trade down from the 10th spot- made easier after the Cowboys selected OT Tyron Smith- to the 16th spot, and acquire Jacksonville's second round pick, leaving the Redskins with pick 9 and 17 in the second round.

With the 16th pick, we selected DE Ryan Kerrigan out of Purdue. He will move to OLB in the 3-4 defense, but other than that, I know little about him. Any thoughts on the pick?

The second round will also be very interesting, as the Redskins have a couple different positions to look at- QB, WR, OG, OT and nose tackle are all possibilities. I think NT is the only position I would guarantee a selection, and the Redskins could also trade down again as well. It will be a very interesting day tomorrow.

Did some reading on Kerrigan at a couple places, and I thought Jason Reid's article at the Post summed everything up about him. A playmaker who can make things happen, who is expected to contribute immediately and who has a great attitude and knows how to play the game. It was a smart pickup, and it was great to also get a second round pick out of the deal. He and Orakpo have the potential to be a great bookend duo of pass-rushers.

If we get a nose tackle with one of our second round picks, I will be extremely happy with this draft. That is our biggest need right now right alongside the offensive line.

I think we go with best available no matter what position. Maybe Torrey Smith falls, who knows. I'll be watching tonight

Just a quick recap of the draft after a busy weekend- I am still reading up on some of the later picks. At the top, we fulfilled the need for a pass rusher, as well as a potential nose tackle (though Jeffries can play anywhere along the line.) Hankerson should be a nice receiver for us, if he can improve his pass-catching (and he has the work ethic to do it.)

The Redskins traded down a couple times, and doubled the picks that they came into the draft with. Later picks were used to fill out depth at skill positions, namely WR, RB and the secondary.

It was curious that the Redskins did not address the QB situation, or the offensive line until the 7th round. Judging from a post on The Insider at the Post, Shanahan has confidence in John Beck to at least give him a shot next year to run the offense. As of right now, he is the only quarterback who is sure to be on the roster next season.

Maurice Hurt is an interesting pick in the seventh, who dropped due to concerns that he used marijuana. The Redskins do need help at guard, and Hurt played both spots at UF, so he will be good depth. The Redskins still need to make a move or two when the lockout lifts to help improve the line.

Bottom line....I am impressed with the Redskins draft class. It was refreshing for once to see the team with so many picks, and to get depth players in positions where we've had issues in the past. I would have liked to see the offensive line addressed more, but this is a process that will take longer than two off-seasons.

Oh, and Helu.....LOVE trading up for him in the fourth. That is the kind of back that Mike Shanahan wants- a guy with some speed who is a cutback runner. With Torain being a more physical back, I can imagine Helu getting some carries right away, and he's got the potential to get the majority of them.

I was happy with our draft. Looks like for what Im reading and hearing is Shanny likes Beck going forward. Who knows. I think if we want to win now though McNabb needs to stay. But he wont because of the fucked up contract.

Like the RBs we got, was a little surprised with the Kerrigan pick some other names there. I dont know where Bowers was in the second round but if he was available with our pick if we didnt trade it away I would have taken a flyer on him. a number 1 pick for second round money. Who cares if we got 4 years out of him. Bucs got a steal there.

What position would Bowers have played in the 3-4? He's too small to be a 3-4 DE in the jumbo front they play and his knee severely limits his ability to play in space as an OLB.

Anyone know who on the staff is a Nebraska alum?

Of course there would be that speculation. No matter who is in charge of the Redskins, they will almost always be mentioned as a suitor for top shelf talent.

Personally, I don't think they are going after Asomugha. We already have enough invested in our other starters in the secondary in Hall, Otogwe and Landry. I think that Carlos Rogers is re-signed, and that is the end of that. Asomugha will cost too much money, and the Redskins have more holes that they need to fix than throwing money at a strength.

I could be wrong, but that is how I see it. And, until the Redskins prove otherwise, they will be linked to high talent free agents.

Coach Mike Shanahan confirmed that fourth-rounder Roy Helu and sixth-rounder Evan Royster will compete with Ryan Torain for the Redskins' starting tailback job.
Shanahan had especially high praise for Helu's speed and playmaking ability, comparing him to an early-career Clinton Portis. "He was that 4.45 guy coming out, very physical, and once he had that open lane, he could go the distance ... I look at Helu as having that type of ability, that type of speed." Torain will enter camp atop the depth chart as the incumbent, but we like Helu's chances of playing a significant role right off the bat. Royster, on the other hand, may not even make the Week 1 roster

Like I said, until the team proves otherwise, they will always be considered interested in high profile free agents. It will be interesting to see if this is true though. This draft was a start in the right direction- lets also see how this next free agent period (whenever it is) continues that positive trend.

                            TIME FOR SOME REDSKIN UPDATES

Redskins coach Mike Shanahan implied he would be comfortable with John Beck as his starting quarterback in 2011.
Maybe he's shooting for Andrew Luck in next year's draft. "When (Beck) came out in 2007 ... he was by far my No. 1 guy," Shanahan said. "I think the world of him." Donovan McNabb won't return to D.C. and Rex Grossman is a free agent, leaving Beck as the only current Skins QB. Soon to be 30, Beck has made just four career starts and looked completely incompetent in them. We'd project Washington's record at 3-13 if Beck is the starter.

The Bengals are expected to decide in the coming days whether to sign a veteran QB to compete with second-rounder Andy Dalton.
The rumor mill is spitting out constant speculation that Donovan McNabb will head to Minnesota, but we suspect the Redskins -- hoping for a draft pick -- are behind those reports. The Bengals, installing a West Coast offense under Jay Gruden, actually make more sense as a landing spot for McNabb on a one- or two-year deal. If Cincy is interested, they just have to make sure McNabb doesn't talk to Carson Palmer or Chad Ochocinco about life under Mike Brown

The Redskins confirmed that second-rounder Jarvis Jenkins will be a two-gap end in Jim Haslett's 3-4 scheme.
Coach Mike Shanahan calls Jenkins the "prototype 3-4 defensive end," and the former Clemson star should be plugged right into the starting lineup opposite a rotation of Adam Carriker and Vonnie Holliday. The Redskins picked up as many six or seven rookie starters in the draft.
