Redskins RB Torain practices fully on Monday

Ryan Torain (hamstring) was a full participant as the Redskins resumed practicing Monday coming off their Week 9 bye.

"I was out there running plays, doing what the coaches asked," he said. "Out there working hard

According to PFT's Mike Florio, Mike Shanahan may have been one of the head coaches who inquired about the Cowboys' head coaching job prior to the 2010 season.

In the end the timing wasn't right, as Wade Phillips was fresh off a divisional playoff run and Shanahan didn't want to wait another year to get back into coaching. Shanahan, the current head coach of the Washington Redskins, will have four more years remaining on his contract following the current season. NFL Network's Albert Breer shoots down the possibility that Redskins' owner Daniel Snyder would let Shanahan out of his contract at the end of the season so that the coach could sign with Dallas.

According to Josina Anderson of Inside the NFL, long-term extension talks between Donovan McNabb and the Redskins are on a "faster track" than those in the media have been led to believe.

Anderson concedes that the "recent controversy" surrounding McNabb's Week 8 benching could derail talks, but prior to the development the Skins were "anxious to get a deal done." There's nothing definitive in the report, but Anderson has been ahead of the game on similar stories around the league. She beat everyone to the punch on Charles Woodson's extension.

According to coach Mike Shanahan, Ryan Torain (hamstring) was able to take more practice reps on both Thursday and Friday than Clinton Portis (groin).

Just more confirmation that Shanny is playing games with us. The head coach said Wednesday that Portis did more work than Torain, but the running backs have apparently traded paces in their respective recoveries. Both players were listed as "limited" in Friday's practice. Torain seems more likely than Portis to play Monday night, but we wouldn't count on either

Ryan O'Halloran of CSN Washington believes that Clinton Portis (groin) will play Monday night against the Eagles.

O'Halloran admits it's "just a gut call," but bases the prediction on Portis' body language at team headquarters Friday. If Portis plays, it's going to make an already banged-up Ryan Torain (hamstring) an even less desirable fantasy option. At this point, it's looking like a situation to avoid in all leagues.

Clinton Portis (injured reserve) underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a torn groin muscle and torn abdominal muscle.

His recovery is expected to take "several months." Portis revealed that he nearly retired two years ago due to his disillusionment with the game, but he's now hoping to return to the Redskins in 2011. The team can terminate his $8.25 million contract without penalty, so he would have to take a huge paycut to return. With multiple lower-body injuries over the past few seasons, Portis has reached the stage where he's not much more than a blocking specialist

Santana Moss (hamstring) was upgraded to full participation in Thursday's practice.

Moss appears to be over the worst of his hamstring injury. Rotoworld has the Redskins' top receiver ranked as the No. 34 fantasy option against the Giants this week.

Updated, 5:15 p.m.: All appears to be quiet at Redskins Park, where free agent safety O.J. Atogwe was reportedly scheduled to visit today. It's unclear if the sixth-year veteran did indeed meet with Redskins officials, however. His agent, Ken Landphere, didn't respond to email and voicemails.

                  Original post:
The Washington Redskins are having free agent safety Oshiomogho Atogwe in for a visit today, according to Howard Balzer of St. Louis' ESPN 101.

Free safety is a position the Redskins are expected to upgrade this offseason after Kareem Moore struggled both with performance and injury last season. And Atogwe, whom the Rams released on Friday to avoid paying him an $8 million signing bonus, could be a good fit. He already is familiar with defensive coordinator Jim Haslett, having played for him in St. Louis from 2006 to 2008.

The 29-year-old Atogwe is strong in pass coverage, having recorded 22 interceptions in six seasons. His best season was 2007, when he notched eight interceptions while playing under Haslett. Last season the 5-foot-11, 205-pound Atogwe recorded 73 tackles, nine pass deflections and three interceptions.

Balzer reports that Atogwe was the Rams' franchise player in 2009, and then was a restricted free agent last season and sought a contract that would pay him $7 million a year, but he eventually re-signed with the Rams last June.

Now Atogwe is testing his value on the open market. But he isn't closing the door on a return to St. Louis.

"This is an opportunity for me to explore other options," Atogwe told Balzer. "It doesn't mean the Rams aren't still an option. A door has been opened so I can really see if this is where I'm supposed to continue to be or if I am supposed to go elsewhere. It gives me and my family more options to make a decision."

If Mike Shanahan and Bruce Allen conduct this visit as they have other free agent meetings, they won't sign Atogwe to a contract today, but instead he would leave and continue to talk to other teams gauging his worth. That's not saying a signing definitely wouldn't come today, however. That's just been the trend. Stay tuned

The Redskins have also brought in Shaun Rogers for a visit so far this off-season. It seems to me that, while things have changed, they have stayed the same. We need to utilize the draft along the defensive line, and also in the secondary. I wouldn't mind an Atogwe signing- at least not nearly as much as a Rogers signing.

Thoughts on either player, or just your general expectations for the off-season?

WOuld love to see Atogew out there with Hall and Landry. We fucked up signing McNabb to that huge contract. If it were something more reasonable he could have come back next season and groom a QB for two years.

Everyone is saying he had a terrible season, its not his fault his WR dropped balls and right into defenders. If he wasnt benched for the final three games he throws for 4000 and he never did that as an Eagle. Atleast with him out there I feel like we have a shot.

You are right, he did not have a terrible season, and no way deserved to be benched. If the reports/rumors are to be believed, the Shanahans tried to tailor McNabb to the offense, and not the offense to McNabb. It is anyone's guess as to why, but it happened, and now it is unlikely he returns.

So, instead of having McNabb and a QB of the future, we likely have Grossman and a QB of the future. You are right, not very inspiring and it doesn't feel like we have a shot.

the only bright spot is Grossman SUCKS and I hope they realize it. ALso I think he is a Free Agent so I hope they dont bring him back but thats wishful thinking.

Atogwe had a great meeting according to the Washington Post but left without a contract. Lets hope for a good draft

Trade the first pick for more or draft the T from USC, if you cant protect the QB (we'd have two good young ones) dont matter who is throwing it.

Get rid of Fat Fuck and sign some reasonable FA

Agreed, but they would probably bring him back as a backup, regardless of what happens. Kyle brought him, and benched McNabb for him, so he's likely to stick by him.

I'll tell you a quarterback that fits what Kyle really wants to do, and that is Kyle Orton. Too bad they already traded for McNabb, otherwise, that deal could happen. Yeah, some people will rag on that, but as we saw this year, he can succeed in an offense focused on vertical passing, which is what Kyle wants to do.

They don't know how good they have it with McNabb, and I hope that they realize it. We will see.
