Redskins team sources tell NFL Network's Jason LaCanfora that they believe coach Mike Shanahan will "ultimately take anything he can" in a trade for Albert Haynesworth.
The sources can't envision the Redskins carrying Haynesworth on the roster as a highly paid distraction in a pivotal year for Shanahan. The Redskins are indeed worried about the Eagles swooping in if Haynesworth is released, so it's in their interest to work out a trade even for modest compensation. Perhaps the Rams or Broncos, with their 4-3 fronts, will be interested

Some members of the Redskins organization have reportedly been "dismayed" at coach Mike Shanahan's "unwavering" support of an unproven John Beck at quarterback.
"He is set on Beck," said one source. "That's his guy. He isn't just saying it for the media or to blow smoke. He's serious as hell about it." Shanahan's new-found love for Beck has some inside the organization wondering why he didn't get the call over Rex Grossman down the stretch last season. Knowing that Shanahan plans to aggressively reload in free agency, his quarterback plans make little sense. Beck has a much greater chance of face-planting than saving his head coach's job.

The Redskins reportedly plan to reinstall veteran Artis Hicks as a starting guard.
Hicks lost his starting job while playing through thigh and groin injuries last season. The plan is for Kory Lichensteiger or Will Montgomery to compete with Casey Rabach at center while the Redskins target a free agent guard to start opposite Hicks

The Redskins' front office has reportedly "wavered" on the merits of re-signing free agent LB Rocky McIntosh.
McIntosh was ill-fitted for the new 3-4 defense, and he fared poorly in the coaching staff's 2010 evaluations. Given what we know about the Redskins plans, McIntosh is a poor bet to return

With Carlos Rogers set to sign elsewhere, the 'Skins have just Kevin Barnes, Brandyn Thompson, and Byron Westbrook behind DeAngelo Hall. Buchanon won't receive heavy interest on the open market

ESPN NFC East blogger Dan Graziano believes coach Mike Shanahan would deactivate Albert Haynesworth for 16 games before releasing the disgruntled defensive tackle.
Graziano has been told that Shanahan is not concerned about Haynesworth as a season-long distraction for just that reason. Shanny may end up settling for a mid-round pick in exchange for Haynesworth, but he won't be released to sign with the Eagles.

The Washington Post's Mike Jones expects Ryan Torain to get the "first shot" as the Redskins' starting running back.
Torain, one of the most injury prone players in the league, deserves to be penciled in as the starter after leading the team in rushing last season. However, the Redskins didn't draft Roy Helu and Evan Royster for no reason. A committee system under Mike Shanahan is likely.

Appearing on NFL Network Monday, SI's Peter King hinted that the Vikings are not a likely suitor for Donovan McNabb.
King's assertion wasn't as strong as a recent one from FOX Sports' Adam Caplan, but he's certainly skeptical. "I'm hearing that Minnesota is not as in love with McNabb as we thought they might have been," said King. Local reporters in Minnesota also insist the Vikings won't pursue McNabb, especially if he'd cost them a draft pick. Without the Vikes in the mix, the Redskins will have a very difficult (impossible?) time trying to trade McNabb.

Chris Russell of ESPN 980 Washington reports that Albert Haynesworth will report to Redskins training camp.
"Of course he will," said a source. The reasons are obvious. Haynesworth wants out of Washington, and the quickest way to force the team's hand is to cause another media blitz by showing up on time. (Assuming Mike Shanahan reacts to the disruption this time.) The Skins can save $3.4 million under the projected salary cap by releasing or trading Haynesworth before the season.

I'm all for bringing back Santana Moss, if we also end up making a deal for another receiver with size like Braylon Edwards.

If we sign Matt Leinart, I will be close to done with the Shanahans. Just stick with one or two reclamation jobs at quarterback, there is no need to add a third. I would however, like to see Kyle Orton as I think he would fit this offense perfectly. Given what happened with McNabb last season, I doubt the Redskins make a move for him.

There's been a lot more talking than deal-making on this first day of post-lockout NFL, so it's worth passing along something said on ESPN Tuesday afternoon.

Adam Schefter reported that the Redskins have had trade talks with the Minnesota Vikings regarding Donovan McNabb. It's been known for awhile that Minnesota might be the most likely landing spot for McNabb. If the two teams had fresh talks on Tuesday, that could be significant. Certainly, the Redskins would prefer to acquire something in exchange for McNabb than unload him for nothing. And the Vikings might prefer avoiding the risk of McNabb getting released and opting to sign with another team.

Of course, there is an obstacle. McNabb is due that $10 million bonus next month, and no team is going to trade with the Redskins unless the veteran quarterback is willing to renegotiate terms. So it's possible that McNabb holds the keys to his own future right now.

The Vikings lost Brett Favre to retirement, and Tarvaris Jackson agreed to terms with Seattle. Minnesota drafted Christian Ponder, but training camp might not be enough time for any rookie quarterback to learn the system and start in Week 1. A veteran like McNabb could be the stopgap signal-caller Minnesota needs.

The Washington Redskins have re-signed leading receiver Santana Moss to a three-year, $15 million deal, according to ESPN.

Retaining Moss, who has led the team in receiving in each of the last six seasons, was one of the Redskins’ top priorities of the offseason.

Moss, 32, and Coach Mike Shanahan were on record saying they wanted to work out a deal to keep him in a Redskins uniform. The two sides reached an agreement on the evening of the first possible day Washington was able to negotiate with Moss since the end of the lockout.

Moss, who didn’t immediately return a phone call, last season thrived in his first year under Kyle Shanahan, reeling in a career-high 93 catches, third in the NFL. He also recorded the fourth 1,000-plus yard season of his career.

Now the question is if Moss will remain Washington’s top receiving threat. The team also reportedly has interest in signing Santonio Holmes away from the Jets.

One more undrafted free agent to add to the list: Kevin Gidrey, a fullback from the University of South Florida.

Gidrey tweeted Tuesday: “GLORY TO GOOODDDD!!! I NEVER GAVE UP MY FAITHHHH!! IM GOING TO THE REDSKINSSSS!!”

Gidrey, who was listed as a tight end at USF, measured at 6 feet 2, 241 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine. The Virginia Beach native began his college career at East Carolina. He finished his college career with 222 yards and one touchdown on 21 receptions

The Washington Redskins have told punter Josh Bidwell not to bother reporting to training camp on Thursday because the team will be releasing him, according to an ESPN report.
The soon to be 36-year-old Bidwell spent all but four games on injured reserve last season while nursing a hip injury.
Teams can’t release players until Thursday.
The Redskins still have Sam Paulescu under contract but are believed to be in pursuit of free agent Brad Maynard, who punted for Chicago last season.

Throughout the offseason, Washington Redskins fans have asked the following when it comes to the quarterback position:

Vince Young’s name had been mentioned at one point, and although there were people within the organization that last season would’ve preferred Young over McNabb, the chances of him coming to Washington this season don’t appear to be great.

Kyle Orton’s name was tossed about on sports-talk radio shows when it was learned Tuesday that the Broncos plan on putting him on the trading block.

Now another quarterback has been linked to the Redskins. ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that the Redskins have entered the bidding for Matt Leinart and that the former USC star is weighing offers from Washington and the Seattle Seahawks. Seattle just signed Tavaris Jackson, and there were reports that Leinart was on his way there as well. Turns out that’s not a done deal yet.

Leinart has been a disappointment thus far in his career, but he’s still young and has time to turn things around. Keep in mind that last season, he played in Houston for Gary Kubiak, a Mike Shanahan disciple, and so he likely has just about as much familiarity with the Redskins’ system as Beck does. Could Leinart beat out Beck and Grossman for the starting job? You wouldn’t exactly call it mission impossible.
