A better analogy would be you creating a company. Then hiring someone else to run it. This person hires people who during their time there commit crimes. He knows that the crimes are being committed and hides this fact from you, and never lets it be known that this is happening. Then one of the people gets busted, and the shit hits the fan. Everyone you have at the top of this company is involved, and you are now finding out the severity.

In reality, this is a criminal case. This isn't lack of institutional control. This is a bunch of grown men getting together, allowing a pedophile do as he pleases.

i just dont understand your thinking when you say this isnt a lack of institutional control. that is your opinion and your entitled, but these are the top officials at the school. When the top officials at the school are involved in a conspiracy to cover up criminal behavior for over 10 years, to me that is the definition of a loss of institutional control

Remember when I was a total asshole a few months back for insinuating that there's no way Paterno with all his power did enough to prevent these crimes? Boy is my face red.

I don't recall, but weren't you one of the people that told me that was stupid when I brought up the fact that they should stop playing or at the very least not go to a bowl game?

Here's my biggest complaint about how people reacted initially and are still in ways reacting. You really didn't know/think that Paterno had total power over that program and University? You really needed all of this to come out to realize the demi-god status he was allowed on that campus?

That's why NAHSTE, I and a few others took the immediate stance of Paterno didn't do enough because there's simply no rational way to think that someone with that amount of power would: A) not know of the crimes B) not put a total stop to it if/when he wanted to.

You can look back at numerous non-child rape cases over the past 15 years to know what type of status Paterno had. From him being fired, saying no and getting his job back, to campus crimes being covered up, etc. it shouldn't have taken a 250 page report for you to assume that Paterno had way too much power over that University.

Edit: ralaw was money in that thread too.

along those lines it would be naive to think the buck stops with the 4 high powered officials being mentioned. the line of people who knew and didnt do anything would be significant if ever investigated

It kind of reminds me of Dumb and Dumber, when Lloyd Christmas was driving down the road and put himself in different scenarios where he was the funniest guy in the room, or the toughest guy in the room, or could fuck like a champ. It seems when a situation like this arises, it's so easy for everyone to step up and have these images of granduer where you would be the point man of justice, and if you were in his shoes it would have gone differently.

The fact of the matter is none of you fuckers, including me, will ever experience 1% of what his responsibility was, or the expectations he had to live up to. Most of you when faced with this situation would piss your fucking pants and be looking for the nearest exit.

So go ahead, shit all over the guy, wish him dead, pray his family dies of AIDS, whatever. I just pray you're never in his position you sanctimonious fucks.

Paterno did many wonderful things, but for me, his legacy is tainted because of one bad decision - a decision that ruined lives. Had he used his power and done the right thing in 1998, he would have been a bigger hero. I wonder what the Gang of Four would have done if Sandusky was in the shower with a child they knew or were related to.

And I really don't want to hear from Jay Paterno and former players like Matt Millen. They can miss me with their bullshit.

Just so we are all clear ...

Changing grades or players selling their own property = punishable by the NCAA

school-sanctioned serial child rape = not punishable by the NCAA

                        That makes lots of sense.

This report shows while he may have done a lot of wonderful things, he was an enabler in things well beyond Sandusky. He was a constant burden to authorities of the University in disciplinary manners regarding his players.

Agreed, except that it wasn't just one bad decision. It was the same decision over and over and over again.

Bingo. The biggest issue is Sandusky, but there is more than that in this report. The report clearly shows how out of control college football coaches who win a lot of games can be. It's a warning to all of college athletics and a big reason why I think the NCAA has to do SOMETHING in the wake of this. Maybe not death penalty but something has to be done at the top level of college athletics.

I think I posted that right after he was fired. I was pretty pissed off and I was venting. But I'm fairly sure I calmed down after that and tried to be a little more level headed.

I apologize for calling anyone a sanctimonious fuck.

But I'm not going to apologize for giving him the benefit of the doubt. I've been a Joe Paterno fan my entire life, and I believed in what I thought he stood for. I admit I was duped into thinking he was something he wasn't, and at this point I'm hurt and disappointed.

                                Now please, continue with the
