...and you went out of your way to see the fight. So they did.
Originally posted by daveI absolutely admit I'm not an educated fan of UFC style fighting, but I want to be entertained. All I saw for 8 minutes (ok 6 of 8 minutes) was Lesnar lying on top of Mir because he could.
The punch flurry at the end which stopped the fight was somewhat interesting, but otherwise this fight was one guy who lied on top of another for 6 minutes of a fight.
Yes, there could have been some strategy involved, but it was boring.
I don't dispute MMA as a serious sport for a second, but an entertaining sport? The pre and post-fight hype were more entertaining than the actual fight.
Clay Guida vs. Diego Sanchez on free TV last week was a great, exciting fight. I can name hundredss of exciting fights, but it dosen't matter, because you won't seek them out.
Nobody is claiming Lesnar/Mir was a great fight. In fact, nbobody even thought it would be to begin with. It was a great spectacle, and nobody feels ripped off. Especially since you had a pretty damn good undercard (something boxing NEVER gives you) to go with it.
It was a fun fight, because of the personalities involved ands the story it told. Randy Couture won one of the most boring fights ever vs. Tim Sylvia, but it's remembered as a classic due to Sylvia being so hated, and Couture overcoming the odds winning the title in his mid 40's. It's all about the story. You follow wrestling, so you know this.Comment

All that doesn't matter.
The UFC is trying to grow and attract fans like me.

Go watch Griffin/Bonner from '05.

And to be honest, they aren't.
This isn't another "dave" joke, but you arent the target demo. They are chasing (and winning) the 18-35 males...the older gen grew up with boxing, dosen't "get" MMA, and will die as boxing guys.
Boxing draws the oldest demo of any televised sport. They do nothing to create new stars or attract young fans. That's why boxing is dying, it has nothing to do with MMA. Both can easily co-exist.
But I digress. You aren't the demo. UFC might have done 1.5 million buys tonight without you. Think about that.Comment

So, metaphorically speaking, our physiology basically has the universe mapped out and you're thinking it needs to be taught addition & subtraction.

That said, I rarely if ever buy a wrestling PPV. Pro wrestling has gotten way too predictable.
That Japan wrestling you watch would make me buy a PPV every month, Warner. That stuff is mind-blowing.My Twitch video link: http://www.twitch.tv/dave374000

You are just VSN's baddest schtick boy. You can't present an argument without being an asshole. And what's so sad is no one at VSN takes you seriously anymore, other than you,Last edited by dave; 07-12-2009, 01:58 AM.My Twitch video link: http://www.twitch.tv/dave374000

I'm more pro wrestling than boxing. I know I'll be entertained for 3 hours with wrestling.

I like pro wrestling in its purest form.
I know it's fake - don't get me wrong - but a great wrestling match (even if pre-determined) is incredibly entertaining.
The extreme wrestling crap is just two guys doing whatever they can for a "holy shit" moment. My Twitch video link: http://www.twitch.tv/dave374000

Anderson Silva is arguably the best P4P in the UFC, yet when he headlines, UFC draws some of it's lowest buy rates.
Yet put old ass washed up Ken Shamrock vs. past his prime Tito Ortiz on PPV, and they set records. Lesnar/Mir will shatter every record, and everyone knew the fight would be mediocre at best.
Hulk Hogan was terrible, but sold millions of tickets. Nobody knows who Dean Malenko is, but he'll wrestle circles around Hogan.
Personalities sell. End of story. Lesnar/Mir was a spectacle. Ripping the quality of the fight is pointless.Comment

In MMA, just like wrestling (because really, they are the same business), being the most skilled fighter (or wrestler) has zero to do with selling tickets.

I'm not a Hogan fan either, but at least he has some charisma.
Again, I agree I watched Mir/Lesnar tonight based on the hype. But, again, I found it boring. My Twitch video link: http://www.twitch.tv/dave374000
