2014 College Baseball Thread (UPDATED - Opening Day Friday)

Wouldn't San Diego St sweeping #25 San Diego be considered an upset as well?

Yeah, there were a few other notable ones this weekend. Georgia Southern took their first 3-game series over Georgia in a long time, and Arkansas dropped a game to Western Illinois.

From BA:

Top 25 Upsets

• Long Beach State at (2) Vanderbilt: The Dirtbags pounced on T.J. Pecoraro (1.2 IP, 5 H, 6 R, 4 ER) and Carson Fulmer (1.1 IP, 2 H, 3 ER, 3 BB) to build a 9-2 lead through three innings Sunday, and they held off Vanderbilt's comeback attempt. Connor Harrell (2-for-5, 2 R, 4 RBI) hit his second homer of the weekend in a losing cause. Jeff McNeil (3-for-5, 2 R, 3 RBI) led the LBSU offense, and the Dirtbags also got three RBIs apiece from Richard Prigatano and Eric Hutting.

• Western Illinois at (3) Arkansas: Mason Pingel (5 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 K) turned in a solid start to help new WIU coach Ryan Brownlee pick up his first win, a 7-5 upset. The Razorbacks made three errors in WIU's pivotal three-run fourth inning Sunday, and Trent Daniel (3.1 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 3 ER) took the loss. Brandon Moore (5.2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K) was strong in relief, and Arkansas got multi-hit games from Matt Vinson, Tyler Spoon, Brian Anderson and Joe Serrano.

• Liberty at (7) South Carolina: The Gamecocks and Flames split a doubleheader, giving South Carolina the series win. In the first game, the Flames scored four unearned runs in a six-run seventh to build a 7-0 lead, but South Carolina stormed back with three in the eighth and five in the ninth to win. Nolan Belcher (5.2 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 9 K) was solid in defeat in the nightcap, but Liberty's two-run fourth proved decisive. Justin Sizemore delivered a go-ahead solo homer for the Flames.

• San Diego State at (25) San Diego: The Aztecs completed a drama-packed three-game sweep with a 5-3 win Sunday. A day after freshman closer Bubba Derby escaped a second-and-third, no-outs jam in the ninth, he inherited a bases-loaded, no-outs jam in the ninth Sunday, and he proceeded to strike out USD's No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 hitters—Louie Lechich, Kris Bryant and Connor Joe—to earn a white-knuckle save.

Alex Bregman was hitting .383/.457/.550 entering today's series finale with Washington, and he has a walk, a stolen base and an RBI triple already through five innings.

:omg2:

Tigers up 6-2, going for dat sweep.

LSU had a great weekend to open SEC play, taking two of three over Mississippi State in Starkville. Mason Katz was named national collegiate and SEC player of the week.

LSU senior first baseman Mason Katz was named Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week and SEC Player of the Week Monday after leading third-ranked LSU to a series victory at Mississippi State.

Katz, a native of Harahan, La., batted .462 (6-for-13) to lead LSU to three wins in four games last week, including the SEC series win in Starkville.

Katz collected four home runs and eight RBI, and he posted a .588 on-base percentage. Beginning with the Tigers’ March 9 game versus Washington, Katz homered seven times in five games and became the first LSU player to homer in five straight games since Brad Cresse accomplished the feat in 1998.

Katz was 3-for-9 in the Mississippi State series with three homers, five RBI and four runs scored. He launched a pair of two-run homers in Friday night’s win over the Bulldogs, including the game-winning blast in the top of the 10th inning.

The Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week honor was the second of Katz’s career, as he also received the distinction last season. Katz also earned the SEC Player of the Week designation last season after leading the Tigers to a series win at Ole Miss.

Katz is hitting .352 this season with four doubles, one triple, nine home runs and 32 RBI. He leads the SEC in home runs, RBI and total bases (58).

BA's top 25 roundup from the weekend series:

1. NORTH CAROLINA
Last Week: 4-1. Overall: 18-1, 5-1 in ACC. (1-0 vs. Top 25). Weekend Series: 4-0.
North Carolina, which had lost 10 of its previous 11 games against Miami, dropped Friday's opener before snapping a six-game losing streak against the Hurricanes on Saturday and winning the rubber game Sunday. Miami lefthander Chris Diaz (7 IP, 6 H, 1 ER) stifled the UNC offense Friday, and the Hurricanes broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the fifth against Kent Emanuel (6.1 IP, 8 H, 4 ER). The Tar Heels scored 11 runs in the third en route to a 14-2 thrashing of the Hurricanes on Saturday. Colin Moran (3-for-4, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2B), Brian Holberton (3-for-3, 3 R, 3 RBI, HR) and Michael Russell (3-for-4, R, 3 RBI, 2B) led UNC's 16-hit barrage behind Benton Moss (7 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 9 K), who carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. With the score tied 1-1 and a runner on second base in the eighth inning Sunday, Miami elected to intentionally walk the lefthanded-hitting Moran rather than pitch to him with lefty A.J. Salcines, and switch-hitting Skye Bolt made the 'Canes pay by launching a three-run homer to left. Hobbs Johnson (5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 K) was strong in a no-decision for UNC, while Trevor Kelley and Chris McCue combined to work four scoreless innings of relief.

Vanderbilt swept its first road series since it swept Auburn in 2011. Conrad Gregor hit his first home run of the year Friday, and Connor Harrell added a three-run shot in support of Kevin Ziomek (8.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K). Daniel Koger, Jay Wade and Will Kendall combined to retire the final 20 Vanderbilt hitters in order after Harrell's third-inning homer, but the damage was done. Tony Kemp (3-for-5, R, 2B) led an 11-hit attack behind Tyler Beede (6.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 6 BB, 4 K) on Saturday. Kemp (3-for-4, 2 R) and Mike Yastrzemski (3-for-4, 2 R) paced Vandy's 13-hit attack Sunday, and Gregor had three RBIs. Chris Harvey, who filled in well behind the plate all weekend for banged-up Spencer Navin, had two hits and two RBIs Sunday, and Rhett Wiseman also had two hits and two RBIs in each of the last two games of the series. Brian Miller saved all three games, allowing just one hit in 2.2 combined innings of work.

Thompson has not allowed an earned run in four of his five starts this season. Mike White's first career home run—a two-run shot to right field—broke a 6-6 tie in the eighth inning in the finale. Ty Young and Sutton Whiting had three hits apiece in that one.

5. SOUTH CAROLINA
Last Week: 4-1. Overall: 17-3, 2-1 in SEC. (0-0 vs. Top 25). Weekend Series: 5-0.
The Gamecocks made their first visit to the SEC's other Columbia and captured two of three against Missouri. Evan Beal (6.1 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 10 K) continued to thrive in the Friday starter role since taking over for injured Jordan Montgomery. Beal set a new career high for strikeouts for the second week in a row, and Grayson Greiner (2-for-3) had his first home run of the year. The two teams split Saturday's doubleheader. Nolan Belcher (8.1 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 K) dominated again in the opener, stretching his scoreless streak to 26.1 innings and improving him to 4-1, 1.25 with 36 strikeouts and one walk in 36 innings this season. Last Week: 3-1. Overall: 18-2, 2-1 in SEC. (2-1 vs. Top 25). Weekend Series: 3-0.
The Tigers opened conference play with a big road series win at Mississippi State, their seventh straight series win against MSU and their fifth straight in Starkville. Mason Katz (3-for-4, 3 R, 4 RBI) blasted two home runs Friday, including a game-winning two-run shot in the 10th inning. Aaron Nola (5.2 IP, 9 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) earned a no-decision for the Tigers, who got a combined 4.1 innings of one-hit, shutout relief from Brent Bonvillian, Joey Bourgeois and Chris Cotton. Katz homered again Saturday, giving him nine on the season, and Alex Bregman added a three-run shot in the ninth to give the Tigers a more comfortable cushion. Ryan Eades (7 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K) earned the win in that one. Cody Glenn (3.1 IP, 6 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 0 K) took his first loss of the season Sunday, and the LSU offense produced a balanced 11-hit attack but left 11 men on base. The Bulldogs drew LSU coach Paul Mainieri's ire after Kendall Graveman threw his first pitch against Katz behind Katz's head and off the backstop—to "set the tempo for the game," as Graveman told reporters later, as the Columbus (Miss.) Dispatch detailed. Graveman received a warning but not an ejection. "To throw it behind a kid's head, I can't respect people who do things like that, and I'm sorry, I just never will," Mainieri said to reporters afterward. Later, he added: "I could understand why they're frustrated. I mean, we beat them every year and they get tired of getting beat by us. To me, there's no place in college baseball for doing that."

Erick Fedde (8 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 6 K) was strong in a no-decision Friday, but Josh Melendez's RBI double in the 10th lifted the Lobos to a 3-2 win. The Rebels stormed back from a 6-3 deficit with five runs in the eighth Saturday and held off UNM's ninth-inning charge to win 8-7. The Lobos scored once in the ninth and had runners at second and third with one out, but Andrew Beresford struck out the final two hitters to end it. Mark Shannon's tie-breaking two-run homer capped UNLV's eighth-inning rally. New Mexico All-American D.J. Peterson homered twice and drove in eight Sunday, as the Lobos knocked around John Richy (4.1 IP, 8 H, 8 R, 6 ER), who was fresh off a complete-game two-hitter a week earlier at Stanford.

LSU beat #10 Kentucky 11-1 last night in the series opener. But that's not what matters, what matters is this:

Since post season is almost here -- conference tournaments start Wednesday, May 22 -- time to start ramping up the coverage. Here's a quick national rundown.

- Carlos Rodon (8 IP, 1 ER, 8 K) led NC State to a 3-1 win over FSU in the first game of the series. Wolfpack have won 21 of 22.

- North Carolina was stunned by Georgia Tech on Friday night. Tar Heels ace Kent Emanuel was roughed up for 4 runs in the 3rd inning but stayed in the game long enough to give up a walk off HR in the bottom of the 9th. Final line for Emanuel: 10 H, 5 ER, 6 K and 1 BB in 8.1 IP. Just the 4th loss of the year for UNC, both overall and in the conference.

- Oregon State beat Stanford on Friday night and knocked Mark Appel around pretty good. Appel gave up 6 hits and 6 earned runs in five innings, matching his shortest outing of the year. The Beavers have won 10 straight and look like a good bet to receive one of the eight available national seeds. Unfortunately, their in-state rival Oregon Ducks are also in line to receive a national seed which means the dream scenario, a 3-game winner take all CIVIL WAR SUPER REGIONAL is off the table. With both teams guaranteed to host super regionals should they advance past regional play, it would not be possible for the teams to face each other until Omaha.

- Speaking of Oregon, they are randomly playing a four game series at Ohio State this weekend. I hear Columbus is nice this time of year. Still a lot of games left on the schedule for the Ducks, including another non-conference series (Gonzaga) and 7 more conference games. While we know there probably won't be a Civil War Super Regional, the two teams will see plenty of each other of the next few weeks. There is a still a 3-game weekend set on the slate plus a midweek single thrown in for good measure. And there's also the Pac 12 tourney of course. Hmm, so maybe it's good if they don't get to play again until the CWS after all.

- Vanderbilt remains the toast of the SEC, and depending on who you ask, the country as they roll in to Lexington. Game 1 was washed out on Friday night, but the Commies are up 3-1 late in the opener of today's double-header. Edit - Vandy is now up 10-1, safe to say game 1 is in the books.

- After dropping the opener Thursday night, LSU salvaged the series with Texas A&M by winning a rain-interrupted game 2 early Saturday morning, and then won game 3 in "extra innings". The game was only supposed to be 7-innings due to a goofy conference rule about getaway day double-headers, but since that wasn't enough time to settle things they played 8. The 45th win ties the regular season record for the program and clinches a no. 2 seed in the SEC; which means the two best teams in the conference, LSU and Vandy, won't play all this year until potentially the championship game in Hoover in two weeks.

Lobo Baseball team eliminated by an Ivy League school in the NCAA Tournament. Oh the irony.

Guess this means the coach is headed to UCLA.
