If a player wants to use...go a head. Just make sure it's not the cheap stuff and ensure you keep your names out of the papers. Learn how to avoid positive tests and make your millions.
If you get caught, just admit it and continue smacking balls. If your health deteriorates because of your use...oh well. At least your family is set, assuming you're not Ric Flair.
Seriously.
As long as the penalties are a slap on the wrist, this will always exist.
The reward outweighs the risk every single time. You can take PED's that help get you the leverage to that big financial deal that you want, and then your only penalty for getting caught is a 50 game suspension.
Let's look at Gio Gonzalez and let's say he took PED's. He turned his career into $8.4 million a year on average for five years, totaling 40 million dollars.
A 50 game suspension on $8 million per year is roughly 2.6-2.7 million. He is risking $2.6 million to make $40 million. There's no risk here. If I'm an athlete, I'm loading up on PED's to get a big contract knowing that I will still bank an extra 10+ million in the long run.
The only true way to defend against PED's is to either throw out the idea of lifetime bans or voiding contracts. I don't like the idea of using certain doctors only, because it's your body and you have every right to see whomever you want.
