Troy Aikman said Tuesday that the Dallas Cowboys' trade for Roy Williams could be a huge bust if the wide receiver doesn't produce, according to a report on the Dallas Morning News' website.
"If Roy Williams doesn't turn out to be the player they thought he would be when they made the trade," Aikman said, "I think this would be one of the biggest busts in the history of the league."
The Cowboys gave first-, third- and sixth-round picks in this year's NFL draft to the Lions in exchange for Williams just before last season's October 14 trade deadline. In 10 games with Dallas, Williams caught 19 passes for 198 yards and one touchdown while battling a foot injury.
Williams will start the 2009 season as the Cowboys' No. 1 receiver after the team cut Terrell Owens last month.
When asked to elaborate on the Williams trade, Aikman added, "I just think that when you have the chance to evaluate a player to the degree the Cowboys were able to and then to give up what you gave up, if he's not a No. 1 receiver and not a highly productive player for this team, that's a huge flaw within their scouting department."
Aikman made the comments during a promotional appearance at Wingstop, a restaurant based in the Dallas area that recently signed a sponsorship deal with the Cowboys, according to the Morning News.
Aikman should know about lopsided trades. The Cowboys sent Herschel Walker to the Vikings in 1989 for a bushel of draft picks that helped Dallas build the three Super Bowl-winning teams Aikman quarterbacked in the early 1990s.
