Pujols' 3 Run Shot In Extras Gives Cards Walkoff Victory In 2nd Straight Game

The Cardinals celebrate in front of their home crowd after Albert Pujols walk off home run.

For the second straight game, the Tigers couldn't get the bats working, and for the second nd straight game, the Tigers lost to the Cardinals in walkoff fashion. This time in extras, thanks to a 3 run shot off the bat of Albert Pujols. The Cardinals won by the count of 4-1 in 10 innings.

Justin Verlander went 7 innings, allowing 1 run and 6 hits, but he didn't factor into the decision. Juan Rincon was pinned with the loss out of the bullpen, as he came into the extra-inning affair late and gave up 3 runs in a third of an inning. The club was paced, well not "paced" per se, by Brandon Inge, who had a hit and an RBI in 3 at-bats.

The Tigers will look to avoid the sweep tomorrow night, with Edwin Jackson(5-1, 3.03 ERA) looking to get his 5th straight win. It won't be easy though as he will be facing off against Chris Carpenter (6-1 , 2.53 ERA).

My gut feeling told me to pitch around him or int walk him, but had I done so, bases would've been loaded.

Trust me, both of these losses have been hard to take. It's not everyday I get shutout or held to 1 run.

The Tigers Need A Left-Handed Bat

Enough games have been played to identify weaknesses in the Detroit Tigers roster and highlight areas of concern going forward if this team intends to maintain its division lead.

The Tigers have only been able to put 1 run up on the board in their past 2 games against the Cardinals. Both of those games were against quality right-handed pitchers. It's obvious they need to go get another hitter.

He should be left-handed should also feature the ability to hit the ball with some regularity.

The Tigers have been rumored to be in deep trade talks with the Atlanta Braves for outfielder Garret Anderson but nothing is confirmed at this point.

However, there are a number of other options that the Tigers could pursue at the trade deadline as well.

The Tigers have also looked at Nick Johnson out of Washington the past few seasons when the trade deadline neared, but they never pulled the trigger on the big first baseman. Detroit would likely have to give up a long reliever like Nate Robertson or a middle reliever like Brandon Lyon and one other player to get a deal done.

Aubrey Huff would be a nice fit from the Orioles, but his price tag may be too high. Adam Dunn could also be had but is terrible defensively and the Tigers already seem to have an abundance of power on their lineup. Luke Scott out of Baltimore and Jeremy Hermida in Florida won’t necessarily be traded, but they are also names to keep in mind.

If the Tigers manage to acquire a left handed hitter, he will likely come off the bench. However, the lineup can always be re-assembled.

Either way, Detroit needs to find a hitter soon and allow the lineup the time needed to work consistently.​

Edwin Jackson gave up only 1 run in 6 innings of work to help the Tigers snap the Cardinals 3 game win streak.

The Tigers, playing on the road in an interleague game took down the tough righty Chris Carpenter and came away with 4-1 win tonight over the Cardinals. Brandon Inge went 3 for4 and drove in a run to spur the club to victory. Edwin Jackson once again bended but did not break, working 6 innings and only giving up 1 run despite giving up 10 hits. The Tigers bullpen was able to preserve his 6th win of the season (5th in a row).

Zach Miner (4-3 , 3.13 ERA) toes the rubber for the Tigers against the Brewers and Dave Bush (4-5 , 3.74 ERA) tomorrow night in the first game of a 6-game homestand for the Tigers.

Chris Duncan is another name that comes to mind. He's generally much better in video games than he is in MLB. He could be had for cheap, since the Cards are OF heavy at this point. The downside with Duncan is that he's a 1B/DH type that plays OF just so he can get on the field. But, he would fit the "pinch hitter" and "platoon player" mold, and wouldn;t take a big name in trade to acquire. If you're not using Larish, the Cards need a 3Bman.

Noted. Makes sense with the Cards needed a 3B and me not using Larish all that much. His right contact rating is nice. However, really low left contact rating. haha.

Maybe Jason Giambi or Ryan Church

Athletics are a half game behind the Angels for #1 in AL West. Giambi seems like he's way too important to them. Ryan Church makes sense. However, not sure what I can give them for it to make sense. He seems like he'd be pretty costly.

Tracy looks solid. Erstad didn't impress me much. Can't seem to find Gwynn on the Padres roster. :rofl:

Tony Clark seems like a "wat" type of player but is a switch hitter with tons and tons of power and fits the DH mold.

Hm. Checked him out. Power ratings seem kinda low.

If you are willing to give up a bit more than the required for the previous players i mentioned.

You could also go after Micah Hoffpauir, Daryl Ward, Corey Patterson, Ryan Langerhans or Jacque Jones.

Patterson has spent the whole season in Triple-A. I guess because of Milledge. Damn. Guy is pretty fast.
