Gerald Laird cracked the recent Tigers' home run drought with this solo shot in the 3rd.

It was a good game all around but the Tigers were topped by the Cubs in an interleague showdown this afternoon, as the Tigers ended up on the losing end of a 3-2 decision. Justin Verlander (6-5) pitched fairly well (again), giving up 3 runs on only 4 hits over 8 innings of work. However, the Tigers offense didn't hold up their end of the bargain (again) as he recorded his 5th loss of the season. Placido Polanco went 2 for 4 with a double and RBI to spark the offense.

Tomorrow night is game 2 of the series, as the Tigers Edwin Jackson (6-1 , 2.91 ERA) aims to land his 6th straight win against Carlos Zambrano (5-6 , 3.84 ERA) and the Cubs.

Marcus Thames On His Way Out?

Tigers outfielder Marcus Thames has met with Tigers management recently to discuss his status with the club.

Thames has expressed his unhappiness about being on the bench.

"I can't tell you what they told me, but we were honest with each other. We got everything out on the table," Thames told reporters at a Tigers practice session this morning. "I know where they stand, they know where I stand. I wanted to hear from them and they wanted to hear from me."​

Tigers Manufacture Runs Late; Inge Walks Off The Tigers Once Again In The 9th

Placido Polanco lays down a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt that put the game winning run into scoring position in the bottom of the 9th.

Last night the Tigers gave their fans a respite from the harsh reality of their lives, winning 4-3 over the Cubs in front of 39,298 at Comerica Park. Magglio Ordonez drove in 1 run on 3 hits, to help the club pick up the victory. Edwin Jackson received a no-decision, despite giving up only 3 runs over 8 innings. Coming into a tie game, rookie Ryan Perry was able to snatch a win, his 3rd of the season, pitching 1 inning in relief of Jackson.

The final game of this 3 game series will feature the Cubs' undefeated ace Ryan Dempster (5-0 , 2.68 ERA) taking on the Tigers and Zach Miner (4-3 , 3.29 ERA).

D-Train Pulling Back Into The Station

Detroit Tigers pitcher Dontrelle Willis is on track to return to the Tigers pitching rotation after inflammation in his right shoulder forced him to miss his last start. Willis claims he can return to the mound tonight in the series finale against the Cubs but Tigers manager Jim Leyland doesn't see the point in risking it.

"Zach (Miner) has given us 2 quality starts in Dontrelle's absence," explained Leyland. The least we can let him do is pitch tonight." Miner is scheduled to face off against Ryan Dempster at Comerica in tonight's matchup. "Dontrelle will be back to open up against the Astros."

With Willis returning to the lineup, the Tigers active lineup now sits at 26, 1 over the league maximum.

The Tigers are expected to option a player to Triple-A Toledo before tonight's game. However, trade rumors surrounding the Tigers are as rampant as ever so there is always the possibilty we could see a trade announcement before the day is over.

Tigers/Mets Come To Terms

Ryan Church can discard that "I Love New York" T-shirt he often wore around the Mets clubhouse as the Mets have bid Church farewell.

The Mets, who never seemed to embrace Church dealt him to the Detroit Tigers this afternoon for LF Marcus Thames, 2B Ryan Raburn and P Nate Robertson.

Church, 30, and Thames had fallen out of favor with their respective clubs this year. Though Church and Mets manager Jerry Manuel repeatedly denied a rift existed between the two, the manager often benched him without explanation, and he definitely was not a favorite of the front office.

The same with Thames. Thames was benced recently due to sub-par performance after a hot start to 2009 and was vocal with his unhapppiness with the decision.

"Shocker," Church said. "Came out of nowhere, but I think we're both in a good situation. You can look at it a lot of ways, but you know the business and how it works.

"Talking to Mets GM Omar Minaya, they needed to get a righthanded bat and they had to pull the trigger. I have no hard feelings. I loved it here."

The Mets also gain a young second baseman in Raburn to play behind Luis Castillo (for now) and some left handed relief (which they lacked previously) out of the pen in Robertson.

The Tigers offense has struggled against right handed pitchers so far this season which sparked the search for a left handed bat.​
