Changes Being Made In The Tigers Dugout

After being swept by the Mariners in their last series and still struggling with Brandon Inge and Placido Polanco out nursing injuries, it was evident some changes needed to be made in the Tigers dugout.

Aquilino Lopez, (0-2 , 17.36 ERA) has not shown he is capable of being productive at this level right now and will be sent back down to Triple-A Toledo. He has blown numerous games for the Tigers this season and manager Jim Leyland has seen enough. Ryan Perry will be recalled from Toledo and has shown some some promise, despite being only 22 years of age. Perry (0-0 , 1.80 ERA) has put in 5 innings of work in 3 games so far with the Mudhens this season. Perry comes equipped with a mid 90's 2 seamer, a low 90's 4 seamer and a formidable slider.

Ryan Raburn was held hitless in the series against the Mariners and is batting .154 on the year after seeing increased playing time with Polanco out nursing a broken forearm. The Tigers have decided to move Raburn back to bench and allow Ramon Santiago to take over the starting role at second base. Santiago will bat out of the 9th spot as well.

Both Perry and Santiago will be ready to go for the Tigers upcoming game in L.A. against the Angels.​

His fastballs are always 98+. Hitting 100 on the radar gun isn't a rare occurence. I might've gotten up to 102 on a high fastball before.

Lopez had one of the best ratings of all the relief pitchers on the Tigers 40 man. So I gave him a chance. Needless to say, things haven't panned out thus far. I've used Perry in online games and he is solid. Hoping that carries over into the chise.

Rick Porcello has been as good as advertised so far his rookie season.

The Tigers drew first blood in this road series with the Angels, winning the initial game of the series.

Unruffled by the 31,299 fans at Angel Stadium tonight, the Tigers scored enough to win fairly comfortably, 7-1 the final score. Rick Porcello pitched a complete game, giving up only 1 run along the win to win number 2 of the season. Gerald Laird went 2 for 3 along with a solo home run and stolen base, sparking things for the Tigers.

The series resumes tomorrow night at Angel Stadium, with the visting Tigers going with Dontrelle Willis (2-0 , 1.46 ERA) and the Angels offering Shane Loux (0-2 , 17.47 ERA)

The Tigers dugout celebrates as Curtis Granderson's second home run hits high off the right field foul pole.

Being away from home didn't ruffle the Tigers tonight, as they beat the Angels 9-6 to take a 2-0 series lead. Curtis Granderson pounded the Angels for 3 home runs, driving in 5 runs while batting 4 for 5. Dontrelle Willis didn't have his best showing, giving up 4 runs and 7 hits over 6 innings of work but it was good enough for him to stay perfect at 3-0 in 3 games so far this season.

Granderson's Long Ball Affair As Juicy As Ever

Detroit Tigers center fielder Curtis Granderson hit three homers lastnight, two more than he has had all season.

Granderson's power surged helped the Tigers continue their strong road play in Anaheim by beating the Angels 9-6.

"This is what we were looking for," said Tigers manager Jim Leyland who got out of his seat to watch Granderson's 2nd homer hit high off the right field foul pole. "He's starting to give it to us."

"I tell you, when he's swinging the bat well, he's certainly fun to watch."

Granderson's first homer came only 4 pitches into the game off Shane Loux's first pitch to Granderson before adding another first-pitch homer in the third inning.

Granderson's third homer came in the seventh inning, leaving him in excellent position to become the 16th major league player - and the first Tiger - to hit four homers in a game.

"I was trying to hit it hard and make a good swing and see what happens," said Granderson, who grounded out his final plate appearance in the 9th.

Granderson didn't become the first Tigers player to hit four homers in a game, but he called his first career three-homer game "very exciting for me."

"It felt really good, especially after I hit a home run with the first pitch thrown to me," he said.

The sight of Granderson crunching a fat fastball in the 1st inning made Angels manager Mike Scioscia cringe.

"Number one, he's a great hitter," Scioscia said. "Number two, you have to make good pitches to a good hitter. We didn't even come close to doing that." ​

Fernando Rodney and Gerald Laird pump their fists after slamming the brakes on a late Angels rally with a strikeout.

The Tigers completed the sweep of the Angels tonight by the final score of 5-2, in front of 25,234 fans at Angel Stadium. Justin Verlander held the Angels to 0 runs until the 9th inning where he would eventually give up 2 before turning it over to Fernando Rodney to close the game out, earning his 1st win of the season. Carlos Guillen showed signs of breaking out of an early slump, batting 2 for 3 and bringing in 2 runs. Gerald Laird also smacked a solo shot in the 9th and went 2 for 4 to help carry the offense.

The Tigers begin a series tomorrow evening in Kansas City, sending Armando Galarraga (1-1 , 3.15 ERA) to the mound against a tough customer, Royals ace Zack Greinke (1-1 , 3.38 ERA).

Curtis Granderson will look to build on his 10-game hitting streak.

Things We Did Well:

- Batted .340 on the series. That's 1 hit out of every 3 at bats. Bad Angels pitching or just better hitting? We'd like to think the latter.

- 7 stolen bases in 3 games. Josh Anderson, Curtis Granderson, and Gerald Laird are aggressive on the basepaths and it's paying dividends as seen by number of runs batted in on the series at 21.

- 9 homeruns in 3 games. Call Angels stadium a hitters park if you want to. 9 home runs is 9 home runs and those big hits are huge when trying to win on the road.

Things We Didn't Do Well:

- Marcus Thames seems to be in the middle of a cold streak. The key is hitting the ball where the other guys aren't, and he's just not doing that right now.​
