Royals 7th Inning Rally Snaps Tigers WIn Streak

Adam Everett makes an outstanding defensive play to rob Coco Crisp of a base hit.

The Tigers were unable to extend their win streak past 3 games after falling on the road to the Royal in the 1st game of their series.

Detroit played tough but came up on the wrong side of the 4-2 decision tonight at Kaufmann Stadium. Armando Galarraga wasn't bad, allowing 2 runs over 6 and a third innings, but all he had to show for it was a no-decision. Ryan Perry, working in relief of Galarraga, failed to deliver in his first MLB outing, giving up 2 runs in 1 and two thirds innings and got saddled with the loss. Carlos Guillen picked up a couple of doubles and came in for both of the Tigers runs, providing a mild spark offensively.

Game 2 is tomorrow evening, with Jeremy Bonderman (0-0 , 2.65 ERA) taking the mound for the visiting Tigers and Gil Meche (1-1 , 3.00 ERA) getting the nod for the Royals.

Inge Activated; Hessman Sent Back Down

After being on the disabled list for roughly 2 weeks after suffering a strained calf, Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge has been activeated for the Tigers upcoming game against the Royals.

Carlos Guillen has been filling in for Inge since his injury at the hot corner and Josh Anderson covering left field. However, with Inge returning, room needs to be made.

Josh Anderson will remain in the Tigers starting lineup in left and as leadoff man thanks to a very impressive .326 batting average in the month of may thus far. His speed is an asset on the basepaths as well as chasing down fly balls.

Carlos Guillen, despite having a rough beginning to the season, has shown signs that his batting stroke is coming back and will take over duties as designated hitter. Tigers manager Jim Leyland is hoping the move to DH will allow Guillen to focus on just hitting the ball without having to worry where he'll be playing defense at.

Marcus Thames, who was previously the DH, will be relocated to the bench. Thames has hit a cold streak and is hitting just .220 so far this season.

Third baseman Mike Hessman will be optioned back to Triple-A Toledo.

Inge was batting a cool .357 before going down with the injury earlier this month.

The Tigers were able to squeak out a 1-0 win lastnight, edging the Royals and picking up a road victory. It was a solid start for Jeremy Bonderman, who worked 8 scoreless innings to finally pick up that 1st win of the season. Miguel Cabrera went 2 for 4 to provide a small jolt for the offense. The Tigers only run came off a Robinson Tejada error in the top of the 9the after nothing more than a swinging bunt by Gerald Laird. Tejada's throw overshot Mike Jacobs and ended up in the outfield. By the time the ball returned to the infield, Inge had rounded the bases and slid into home.

The two teams wrap up the series tomorrow afternoon, with Rick Porcello (2-0 , 3.04 ERA) and the Tigers set to take on Juan Cruz (0-0 , 3.38 ERA) and the Royals.

Royals Bullpen Failures Lead To Victory For Tigers In Extras

Miguel Cabrera was a force to be reckoned with as he hit 2 home runs, including this 421 foot bomb in the 7th.

The Tigers were able to take advantage of the Royals shaky bullpen to pick up the win in the final game of their 3 game series.

The Tigers needed extra innings this afternoon but eventually bested the Royals 7-5 in extra innings. The Tigers trailed on numerous occasions in this one but always found a way to get back into it to force it into extras. That was until the 13th, where the Tigers pulled ahead with a 2 run 13th, that included a solo shot by Miguel Cabrera, his 2nd of the game, to win the game. Cabrera pounded the ball, also hitting 5 for 6. Working in relief of Rick Porcello, Juan Rincon came into game and vultured his 1st win of the season, pitching 1 inning while allowing no runs.

The Tigers start a new series back in Detroit tomorrow night, sending Dontrelle Willis (3-0 , 2.95 ERA) to the mound against the Yankees and Andy Pettitte (1-0 , 0.89 ERA)

Things We Did Well:

- Showed our pitching can carry the weight if our hitting is off, which is a complete turnaround from a season ago. We didn't exactly kill the ball but our pitching kept us in games.

- Also showed serious resolve in the final game of the series where we tied the game up twice to force into extras and eventually win. We never let go of that rope.

Things We Didn't Do Well:

- Ramon Santiago, who was inserted into the lineup to provide a boost in place of a slumping Ryan Raburn, is actually hitting worse than Raburn did. I need Placido Polanco back from injury.

- Marcus Thames is also on a serious cold streak after busting out of the gates this season.​
