BCS Playoffs..UPDATE 6/5. Pac-12 Commish Larry Scott is fucking awesome

I favor a 4-team (would accept an 8 even) playoff with a stipulation that any undefeated team AQs. Could discourage teams from scheduling tough competition, but so does the current system.

Alabama made the championship game by virtue of losing to a good team with a really hard schedule and then themselves beating the rest of their otherwise soft schedule.

BCS Playoff Restructuring Thread: Meetings this week.

BCS Playoff Restructuring Thread: Meetings this week.

NEW YORK -- No promises for a playoff, but the guys who run college football will meet next week as they inch toward making major changes to the postseason.

BCS executive director Bill Hancock said Tuesday that the meetings in south Florida on April 24-26 will not result in a final decision on how major college football will determine its champions, starting in 2014.

The goal instead for the 11 conference commissioners and Notre Dame's athletic director is to come away with several very specific and detailed options for the leagues to consider when they begin meeting individually next month.

"This is not the final meeting," Hancock said.

BCS officials are sticking to their self-imposed, mid-summer deadline for having a future postseason format completed. Though Hancock says it is "not a given" the BCS will switch to some type of four-team playoff.

There are versions of one being considered. A memo to college football officials, first reported by USA Today last week and obtained by the AP, details four options for the future of the Bowl Championship Series.

One is sticking with the current system with some tweaks, like eliminating automatic bids.

Another is a traditional looking playoff, with four seeded teams playing in semifinals and the winners advancing to a championship game. But there are four ways to set up that type of playoff being discussed, including playing the games in bowls, playing the game at neutral sites away from the traditional bowls or playing the semifinals on campuses.

The others have the participants in the championship game being selected after the bowls are played.

"There are so many details, intricacies to this," Hancock said.

The more I read about this entire thing and the longer it takes the more I'm afraid that we will end up with some poop dick system. I'd love to see the games be played on campus for the semi's. Really reward the higher seeds that way.

It all depends on what you consider a decent playoff. I'd love a four team playoff with only conference champions and with the semi-finals taking place on the higher seed's campus. That is probably my ideal system. However, if the semi-finals took place at a bowl (say the Cotton or Rose), then it would still be a great system. If they made it so it was just the top four teams, I'd be pissed that the BCS would be trying to cut out the non-BCS schools, but it is still better than our current system and a step in the right direction.

On the other hand, if they went to some 8 or 16 team debacle where everyone gets in, then I'd rather stick with the current system, which isn't good, but also isn't utterly terrible in comparison to those types of playoffs. Also, I wouldn't want the weird Rose Bowl Big Ten/Pac 12 scenario that was punted around.

Wut?

Y?

I'd rather a concise system that rewards playing a tough schedule and being a strong team over one that just accepts anyone who happened to win the Sun Belt or wasn't able to win their division, let alone their conference, but because they are from a BCS conference, they get in over qualified non-BCS schools.

Top four conference champions makes the regular season matter tremendously as they have to win their conference, it requires teams to play a tough OOC schedule so that they impress the voters and computers enough to be in the top 4 of the conference champions, and then it allows for non BCS schools to be in the mix as if they go undefeated or play a tough schedule OOC, they can easily be in the top 4 of conference champions most years.

8 teams would be perfect. You take the ACC, Big 10, Big 12, SEC, Pac 10, Big East (I guess) winners, plus two at large teams.

I've yet to understand why anyone would ever want automatic qualifiers. All it does is screw more qualified, non-BCS schools.

Provide examples of this because IIRC preseason polling can end up fucking over some of these schools hard.

it also makes no sense that allowing more teams that win their conference in lessens the impact of the regular season or the amount of meaningful games in college football. The exact opposite is true.

2008 would have been Oklahoma (B12), Florida (SEC), USC (Pac-10), and Utah (MWC).
2009 would have been Alabama (SEC), Texas (B12), Cincy (Big East), and TCU (MWC).
2010 would have been Auburn (SEC), Oregon (P10), TCU (MWC), and Wisconsin (B10).
2011 would have been LSU (SEC), Oklahoma State (B12), Oregon (P10), and Wisconsin (B10) [would have been Boise, but they didn't win the MWC].

Smaller schools still definitely get a shot with a four team conference playoff and if you got rid of the horribly biased coaches poll and replaced it with the AP poll (which dropped out of the BCS since it wasn't a playoff system), it would be far more accurate and far less biased. Also, I think if the BCS allowed computers to use their real ranking system, not the bastardized version that doesn't include margin of victory (or at least allow them to cap MoV at 28 points or something), then the system would be even better for ranking teams without basing it purely on pre-season polls or conference bias by coaches.

UPDATE:
When USA Today published an internal BCS document earlier this month outlining the potential four-team playoff models currently being discussed, fans and media were nearly universally bewildered by an option entitled "Four Teams Plus," in which the Rose Bowl would continue hosting the Big Ten and Pac-12 champions whether or not they qualified for a playoff. The common refrain: The stodgy old Rose Bowl is mucking things up again.

It turns out Rose Bowl officials were just as surprised as the rest of us.

"That was the first we ever heard of that model," said Kevin Ash, the Rose Bowl's chief administrative officer.

The BCS conference commissioners have spent the past several months discussing potentially seismic changes to the sport's postseason. Considering the possible ramifications of such changes on the four current BCS bowls and the rest of the bowl industry, one might assume bowl officials would have a formal say in the matter.

To this point, that hasn't been the case.

"We're not at the table," said Ash. "Our [conference] partners are at the table."

That will change a bit next week when commissioners, athletic directors, bowl officials and television executives convene at the Westin Diplomat in South Florida for the BCS' annual meetings. While bowl reps have received updates from their respective partner conferences these past few months (and have presumably reached out to others in the business to find out what they're hearing), this regular annual review will be the first time the four BCS heads have met with the entire group.

Even then, each director will get only 30 minutes in the room.

Coinciding with those meetings Tuesday through Thursday at the Westin Diplomat, the Football Bowl Association will hold its annual convention at the Harbor Beach Marriott. All 35 bowls will send representatives, and many of their conversations figure to center on the exchanges taking place 12 miles north.

"Of course everyone is concerned about what is happening," said FBA Chairman Tina Kunzer-Murphy, executive director of the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas. "Everything you read is what we're hearing too."

Nothing will be finalized until later this spring or early summer, after the commissioners hold more discussions and each conference's president weighs in. The BCS is still paying lip service to the possibility of tweaking the current model, but multiple commissioners have told SI.com that's highly unlikely. At the very least, the sport will move to the "Original Plus One" (a championship matchup determined after the bowls) or to some variety of a four-team playoff, which could be played entirely, partially or not at all within the bowl system.

The bowls, understandably, have their preferences.

"If there are semifinal games, if there's a championship game, I think it makes sense to have it in the existing bowl structure rather than try to duplicate it in other areas," said Fiesta Bowl CEO Robert Shelton. "I've been to State College, it's a beautiful place, but it doesn't have, for instance, the 1,500 volunteers that work for us every year. It would be very hard to host an event without that existing infrastructure."

Playing semifinal games at existing bowl sites would likely resuscitate games like the Orange Bowl, which has seen drastic drops in attendance and TV ratings in recent years. However, if the commissioners opt to play the semifinals at on-campus or new neutral sites (like, say, Indianapolis), the bowl business would likely feel the trickle down.

"That means two more teams have been taken outside the potential pool for our bowls," said Gary Cavalli, executive director of the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl. "That affects everybody. The entire bowl system takes a minor hit."

The scenario that makes the BCS bowls particularly nervous is the possibility of not only precluding the bowls from hosting semifinals, but bidding out the championship game to any U.S. city. "The championship game would not be branded as a bowl game even if a bowl organization serves as host," reads the description in the aforementioned BCS document.

Should that happen, "It changes our financial model considerably," said Shelton. Since the BCS' 1998 inception, the Fiesta Bowl has counted on the revenue from its turn hosting the championship game every four years to help fund team payouts for both its regular game and the Insight Bowl, which is run by the same organization. (That game will have a new name this year after Insight let its contract expire.)

"Would we still host the Fiesta Bowl? Of course we would," said Shelton. "But the intake and the outflow would be different. ... [The Insight Bowl] would have to run with a much lower payout and a much different set of teams."
Playoff advocates continue to use the Fiesta Bowl corruption scandal as an argument against the current system.

Few playoff advocates have sympathy for the bowls' plight, citing for one thing the Fiesta Bowl's recent corruption scandal under Shelton's predecessor, John Junker. The 2010 book Death to the BCS detailed myriad examples of lavish spending by bowl organizations plus overpriced, unused tickets as evidence that the conferences should stop "outsourcing" their most important postseason games.

Bowl supporters contend that moving games to campus sites would deprive players of the weeklong bowl experience. Depending on ticket distribution, fans of the two visiting schools might not be able to support their teams in person. And with attention focused on the playoff, interest in the lesser bowls may decline.

"Whether they tweak it a bit is one thing, but to go to a playoff would be detrimental to our bowl," said Kunzer-Murphy. "I think what we have now, if we have a few changes, we can live with that, but I haven't seen anything [else] that stands out and says: This is a great suggestion."

The Rose Bowl may have the most at stake. The Granddaddy has been largely resistant to the dips in interest suffered by its counterparts, with attendance annually exceeding the bowl's official 92,542 capacity. But it's also far more dependent on traveling fans. It allots nearly 20,000 more tickets to the participating schools (roughly 55,000 total) than any other bowl, with many Big Ten fans traveling 2,000-plus miles to attend. While the Rose Bowl can be assured a continued Big Ten-Pac-12 matchup due to the parties' ironclad relationship, it could become a de facto consolation game should both leagues' champions reach the playoff.

Based on conversations with multiple BCS sources, Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany proposed the aforementioned "Four Teams Plus" playoff model with the Rose Bowl exemption, which SEC commissioner Mike Slive recently called "not one of my favorites." Said another commissioner: "That's not one I would expect to get a lot of traction." Even Delany's motives are unclear, since the Big Ten was the first to go public with its interest in on-campus semifinals. And the Rose Bowl doesn't seem keen on hosting two random teams in a seeded semifinal.

"We have two very intelligent commissioners that are leading the way, and we do feel like we have a voice," said Ash. "It's important we protect our brand, and we really want to continue to be important in the postseason."

Thirty-four other bowl directors want much the same thing. But they have surprisingly little say in determining their own futures.

:yao: at the bolded. I'm sure Penn State, or any other large university, would have a REALLY tough time finding 1,500 people to volunteer to work a playoff game on campus.

:omg:

LOL at Bowl officials. "I know these big colleges host large sporting events on eight weekends out of the year, and we only do it once a year ... but they just wouldn't know how to handle an event of this magnitude!"

But NAHSTE, where will a college of over 40k students find 1,500 volunteers?!?!?!

ND can get 30k+ to a spring game for a team that went 8-5.......................

Would have trouble finding 1,500 people to work a BCS playoff game as volunteers

:cano:

They could easily get 1,500 people. Fraternities and sororities would make up most of the volunteers and I'm sure you'd get some other organizations sending people as well. Bowl officials go out of their way to make it seem like their jobs are so tough.

2006 Boise still would have got screwed, same in 2009 which you conveniently ignore.

I didn't ignore, I just didn't want to go back any more years. As for Boise getting screwed in 2006, they got screwed because of a low ranking by... *gasp* the human voters, which are the exact people I keep saying are biased and need to be limited. The computers had them at 7th and they would have gotten in the top 4 conference championship playoff, but the human pollsters such as the coaches (who I said get rid of) only ranked them 9th. They wouldn't even have made a top 8 playoff according to those biased fucks. There can be huge changes to the ability of smaller teams to make a tournament if we use a more exact BCS computer ranking, replacing the Coaches' Poll with the AP Poll, and doing away with the idea of AQ BCS conferences.

I want 8 or 16.. but that will never happen without a 4 team playoff.

It's a step in the right direction. When the NCAA sees the insane amount of cash they're going to make off this thing.. playoff expansion will come and those like Pand and Jeremy will love it. :kobe:
