BCS Playoffs..UPDATE 6/5. Pac-12 Commish Larry Scott is fucking awesome

Why does the Nebraska chancellor want to preserve the Rose Bowl? I don't think Nebraska has ever played in it.

Nebraska has played twice in it, back in the forties and the debacle against Miami. Either way, like I said in the past, the Rose Bowl is going to have a lot of say, even if some fans might not care, the ones who have been on the donation lists for decades are the ones with the voice and they still see it as important.

CHICAGO -- Big Ten officials came out in favor of keeping bowl games as sites for college football's planned playoff on Tuesday, preferring to keep the Rose Bowl as the conference's postseason tradition.

Conference athletic directors as well as commissioner Jim Delany said Tuesday that many details must be resolved before a national playoff is established. Big Ten presidents and chancellors will determine the conference's official position early next month.

"There was a pretty strong consensus among the ADs that we'd like to have the playoff within the bowl system," Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne said. "It would be a competitive advantage to have semifinal games at home fields. ... But the bowls have been good to us. If you took them out of the playoff, it would pretty much destroy the bowl system."

A four-team Football Bowl Championship system debuts in the 2014 season, replacing a current No. 1 vs. No. 2 BCS Championship Game that has rotated among the Sugar, Orange, Fiesta and Rose Bowl sites.

Delany and Big Ten administrators will continue meeting on Wednesday. The sessions at a downtown hotel include conference athletic directors, senior women administrations and faculty representatives.

Options for selecting the four teams include taking the top four teams in a poll, the four highest-ranked conference champions or a combination of both.

"I do think there's room for conference champions -- and this is a personal observation -- as well as highly-rated non-conference champions and independents," Delany said. "How that happens is to be determined."

Delany also doesn't want to water down the rest of the college football season.

"The regular season has been and will continue to be the bedrock of college football," he said. "I know that the postseason is important, I know that the championship game will be important and the model that leads to that game will be important.

“It would be a competitive advantage to have semifinal games at home fields. ... But the bowls have been good to us. If you took them out of the playoff, it would pretty much destroy the bowl system.
” -- Nebraska athletic director Tom Osborne

"I don't want to adopt a model that discourages playing good opponents or any way belittles the regular season championship process," he said.

Several athletic directors who spoke Tuesday were adamant about preserving traditional bowls, particularly the Rose Bowl's matchup of the Big Ten and Pac-12 champion.

"For us it's critical to keep the Rose Bowl in the equation," Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis said. "From kids' perspective, the bowl experience is the one thing they want to keep. Semifinals at bowl sites provide that, it's where fans can gather. With campus sites, it becomes (more) like a regular-season game."

Picking No. 1 vs. No. 2 for a national championship game has been complicated and with a four-team field controversies could multiply.

"Who are the teams?" Hollis said. "Who decides teams? Is there a committee? Are you strictly going by polls?

"It's very easy to determine 1 and 2 (but) 3 and 4 get complicated," he said. "Polls can do a good job with 1 and 2. I'm not so sure they can do a good job with 3 and 4."

In April, commissioners from 11 conferences and Notre Dame reached a consensus on a four-team playoff with two national semifinals followed by a championship game. The proposed format would schedule semifinals after Christmas and a national title game around Jan. 1.

Commissioners are scheduled to meet in late June and have a new format in place for approval by university presidents by July 4. BCS executive director Bill Hancock said last month that if no agreement was reached, an overhauled version of a No. 1 vs. No. 2 championship game would be used.

Osborne, meanwhile, is uncertain whether the field would remain at four.

"There will be a push to make it eight or 16," he said. "When I started coaching, the regular season was nine games, and then 10, 11 and 12. Now with conference championship game (and a playoff) you're dealing with 15 games (and it could go) to 16 or 17."

Although the Big Ten sent 10 teams to bowl games following the 2011 season, Delany said he wants to end the practice of sending 6-6 teams to bowl games, opting for a 7-5 records a minimum requirement

"If there's not unanimity, there's a very strong consensus that 7-5 is a better standard than 6-6," Delany said. "Six and six is not as special."

God the Big Ten is fucking retarded.

Having the semi-finals at the bowls is just a way of continuing the competitive advantage that SEC and Pac-10 schools already get by having bowl games played in their own backyard.

And on a similar note, expecting fans to travel to possibly 3 neutral site games (CCG, Semi-finals, and Finals) may be a bit idealistic considering how many schools can't even sell out bowl games, no?

The root of what is stopping a playoff from occurring is obviously the bowls and the vice like grip that they have in the conference commish's balls. It will be a satisfying day when the Rose Bowl either no longer exists, or is being played out by two stubborn leagues that are left out of the shit people care about, the playoff.

Also, time to stop inviting Notre Dame to these meetings. Join a league already or play Army & Navy 11 times. This isn't 1963.

Wait, I thought the on-campus hosting was the Big Ten's idea in the first place? I thought they were tired of always having to play in New Orleans and Miami...

Anyway, I am 100% in favor of the home team host site plan, but since it is awesome and every fan would love the shit out of it, it can never be. It's in the bylaws.

It is a competitive advantage... so win more games, so you can gain it. And 1 game over .500 isn't a massive difference, Delany. I don't give a shit about any sub-par team's snooze-bowl game.

CHICAGO -- How about a national championship game in Detroit? Or Minneapolis? What about Boston or New York?

With college football headed toward a playoff, Big Ten administrators this week came out in favor of staging those games in bowls, a step that would keep the conference's longstanding ties to the Rose Bowl.

But league officials said they could see the title game being played in cities other than the usual suspects in California, Florida and Louisiana, though they did not offer any specific suggestions.

"I think the championship game in any scenario is going to be independently bid, not part of the bowl situation," commissioner Jim Delany said Wednesday after wrapping up two days of meetings. "If you looked at the options that we brought back to our conferences -- one is inside the bowl, one is outside the bowl -- in either case, I think the information indicated that the championship game would be bid out."

A playoff, likely to include four teams, is expected as soon as the 2014 season, replacing the No.1 vs. No. 2 BCS championship matchup that has rotated among the Sugar, Orange, Fiesta and Rose Bowl sites.

Michigan athletic director David Brandon said the title game "is going to be huge" wherever it is played, but there are more immediate issues at hand, mainly determining the championship field. Options include taking the top four teams in a poll, the four highest-ranked conference champions or some combination of both, and none is a cure for the current controversies.

If anything, they could be magnified.

Picking the two teams for the national championship game is already complicated. Adding more spots to the mix probably won't make it easier.

"We have a system that's been pretty good at determining the No. 1- and No. 2-ranked teams," Brandon said. "If you go back in history, there's been a high correlation between the No. 1- and No. 2-ranked teams of one of them becoming the national champion. Our ability to know who truly deserves to be No. 3 and No. 4 and No. 5 and No. 6 is far less accurate."

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez said part of the problem is transparency -- or a lack of -- with the current rankings system. He wants more clarity.

"I personally think there should be a committee, and it should be transparent so all the coaches and the public know the criteria, where the most weight is put and why decisions are made," Alvarez said. "And someone stands up much like the basketball committee and tells the public why. Tell coaches why, so coaches know going in what the criteria are, what is going to be weighted, if it influences your scheduling. Is it margin of victory? Does that weigh in? Strength of schedule -- does that weigh in? Home or away?"

Brandon said he is "very concerned" about the possibility of teams playing up to 15 games in a season -- 12 on the schedule, plus the Big Ten championship, a bowl and the national title game, for example. But he said he is fine with the four-team format. If that sounds like an about-face for someone who had come out against a playoff system, well, he doesn't quite see it that way.

"I don't view this four-team concept that's currently being discussed as a true playoff," he said. "That's where maybe my past comments have been confused. When I think playoff, I think eight teams, 16 teams, something that takes a large number of teams, where you truly try to identify who is the ultimate champion."

He added: "I think it's the only practical model now in terms of balancing all the various interests, including length of season, numbers of games played."

Alvarez said there has been "a lot of discussion" about condensing the bowl schedule from Christmas to New Year's Day as much as possible, with schools out of session and more people in general taking vacations. He also said he thinks the playoff games would be played during that window, followed by the title game.

Delany thinks the bowl schedule could be condensed if a rule requiring teams to go at least 7-5 to be eligible is passed.

"I don't know what the effect will be if 7-5 gets passed," he said. "Maybe it'll be easier to do. There will be fewer bowl-eligible teams and as a result, fewer bowls."

Notes
Delany insisted the Big Ten is not looking to expand again, although he did acknowledge that "the plates underneath conference alignment are still hot (around the country)." ... The commissioner said details are still being worked out on a Big Ten-Pac 12 scheduling partnership. ... The Big Ten is looking into an affiliation with the Pinstripe Bowl. "I think New York City is the financial, sports capital of the world," Delany said. "It's a global city, like Chicago. We'll have conversations with them."

http://espn.go.com/college-football...r-mike-slive-favors-4-team-playoff-not-plus-1

HOOVER, Ala. -- Southeastern Conference commissioner Mike Slive is standing by a four-team playoff to settle college football's national championship, not a plus-one system.

Pac-12 Conference commissioner Larry Scott told The Wall Street Journal this week that the new bowl matchup between the Big 12 and SEC champions revives the possibility of a plus-one championship game following the bowls. Slive doesn't think so.

"It's interesting because clearly what we did created a lot of thinking by a lot of people," Slive said Saturday while taking in a game at the SEC baseball tournament. "I appreciate people thinking about that.

"I think what's in the best interest of college football is a four-team playoff. I think it's better for everyone involved in the game. The plus-one narrows the postseason in a way that's not necessarily in the best interest of all the conferences."

A new playoff format will be a hot topic next week when the SEC presidents, coaches and athletic directors convene for spring meetings in Destin, Fla.

Slive said he's "wide open" to considering ideas about how to select the four teams.

One that probably won't be among his favorites: Big Ten commissioner Jim Delaney has said the new format shouldn't include a team that doesn't win its conference division -- an obvious reference to national champion and SEC West runner-up Alabama.

"I'm very open to a thorough analysis and review of how teams are selected," said Slive, who didn't address Delaney's comments directly. "It seems to me that if that is the issue, then we ought to address that and not compromise the national championship by gerrymandering who plays. I am very much open to a thorough analysis of the selection process, and whatever changes people recommend that are worth looking at."

Slive doesn't expect much opposition to a playoff within the league that has won the past six BCS national titles.

"I've been talking about it for a long time," he said, "and no one's criticized me for talking about wanting a four-team playoff."

Slive said the issue of safety and concussions is also on the agenda for the meetings starting Tuesday in Florida.

He said the SEC will propose a task force chaired by someone with a medical background to develop information. He said league officials met several weeks ago with trainers, doctors and others "and are beginning to restructure how they function so that they can play a significant role in this analysis."

"There's no doubt in my mind that that task force will be appointed and be operational very quickly," he said.

Larry Scott fucking rocks.

The Pac-12 did not decide which postseason format it will support on the final day of its summer meetings in San Diego, CBSSports.com reported.

The SEC and Big 12 recently announced that they are in favor of the four-team playoff format that includes the top four teams in the country—not just conference champions.

Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott clearly favors a model that awards conference champions.

“What I left with is a very clear direction that we need to not just preserve, but actually enhance the meaning of being in a conference,” Scott told CBSSports.com. “We want competing in our conference and winning our conference to mean no less than it does today and maybe even more.”

Scott even said that the Pac-12 would not be excited about sending a non-Pac-12 champion to the BCS title game. Last season, Alabama advanced to and won the BCS title game without playing in the SEC Championship Game.

“Our conference would not have been comfortable, had there been a playoff system last year, accepting that Stanford is in the playoff and not Oregon,” Scott told CBSSports.com. “Stanford was ranked fourth and Oregon was ranked fifth. Oregon beat Stanford, had to play an extra game, was conference champion and subsequently Oregon went on to win the Rose Bowl.

“That’s crystal clear to us. If Oregon wins our championship, they deserve to be in a playoff ahead of one of our other teams.”

Nick Saban thinks this stance is a buncha hooey.

I still disagree.

While I agree that winning a conference is important, in my opinion, Alabama and LSU, CLEARLY, were to two top teams in the nation. It was no contest. They deserved to play in the national title. None of that "well, they had their shot" bullshit. They were the two best teams.

Winning the conference should be a factor, but not a requirement.

How exactly could you CLEARLY state that Alabama and LSU were the two best teams before the championship game when Oklahoma State had an identical record, won their conference, and had just come off of an utter destruction of their arch-rival?

Either way, the only way a playoff can state that they are making the regular season really matter for more teams is to only allow conference champions. Multiple teams from the supposed "Power Conferences" over more qualified undefeated non-BCS schools is what drove the need for these playoffs in the first place.

You don't think it's unfair that Alabama, who LOST to LSU, got to sit back and watch LSU play another potential knockout game, while they received a free ride in to the national championship game? Had LSU lost, depending how they lost, they might have been bounced from their spot while Alabama, who finished second in their division, lost to LSU, and didn't have to risk their position, was given a spot?

That's just fucked, and that's why this shit is broken and doesn't work. Last season was a farce, and to me, failed to produce a champion.

In 2006, OSU and Michigan were CLEARLY the two best teams in the country after their epic #1 v #2 showdown.

Oops.
