Beaver Fever: An Oregon State Dynasty

Cincinnati (1-1) at Oregon State (2-0)

Corvallis, OR - Beaver Nation was out in full force at Reser Stadium looking for Oregon State to avenge the embarrassing loss to Cincinnati a few years back. "I'm really looking to redeem myself for that game a couple years ago. We really want to beat these guys bad," OSU QB Lyle Moevao said on a local radio station earlier in the week. Moevao was referring to the first time these two teams met in 2007 in Cincinnati where the Bearcats blew out the Beavs 34-3. A game where both Sean Canfield and Lyle Moevao each threw three interceptions. It was a signature win at the time for Brian Kelly's Bearcats but now Oregon State was looking to return the favor.

The Bearcats came in with one loss but that loss came against Rutgers on first game of the season which by all accounts the Scarlet Knights look like a good team, despite a scare earlier in the day against FIU. While Oregon State has yet to play any serious competion, but has still struggled in the passing game. The Beavers, in their last two games against Big East opponents have scored a combined six points between the 3-0 Sun Bowl win versus Pitt, and the 34-3 beating by the Bearcats.

Despite a loud Reser Stadium, the Bearcats were able to get a first down, but the drive stalled just inside OSU territory. Head coach Brian Kelly went for it on 4th and four at the OSU 44-yard line but failed. Momentum was riding high for the Beavers until the first play for Oregon State was a broken play that saw QB Lyle Moevao lose seven yards. On the next play, WR James Rodgers got the handoff out of the slot but could not turn the corner where he was pasted by the Bearcat defense, losing the ball to the turf. The Bearcats recovered and returned it to get out in front 7-0 as Reser Stadium fell silent.

Oregon State would not help matters on their next possession, going three-and-out. But Cincinnati could not take advantage of taking the crowd out of the game as the Beaver defense held the Bearcats to a three-and-out. Finally, OSU put a drive together mainly relying on Moevao to pass the ball. It was obvious early on that the Bearcats had made it a priority to stop Jacquizz Rodgers. However, Rodgers would end the balanced attack with a 2-yard touchdown scamper to tie the game 7-7.

Cin2.jpg

But as the first quarter came to an end, the Bearcats were on the move into the red zone. To open the 2nd quarter, on 3rd and goal at the one-yard line, HB Jacob Ramsey trucked over OSU MLB David Pa Aluhi for a one-yard touchdown run to put the Bearcats back in front 14-7.

Cin3.jpg

Cincinnati HB Jacob Ramsey trucks over OSU MLB David Pa Aluhi for a one-yard touchdown run.

Moevao would put together a decent drive in response, hitting WR Casey Kjos over the middle but he was just short of the goal line on a 3rd down play. Rather than risking not scoring, Mike Riley chose to kick the field goal to make it 14-10 Bearcats. With under a minute left, Cincinnati QB Tony Pike engineered an impressive drive as the Bearcats were able to kick a 30-yard field goal as time expired to make it 17-10 Bearcats at halftime.

It was pretty clear by halftime that these two teams were evenly matched, and the Beavers would have a hard time playing catch up because of the early fumble return. The 2nd half would start for the Beavers much the way the 1st half did as OSU was forced to punt when Moevao was sacked. Moevao was really starting to take a beating as the offensive line could not get the running game established and was not pass protecting well either. But OSU defense would force a three-and-out to get the Beavers the ball back. Then Moevao hit WR Casey Kjos over the middle to get OSU into the red zone. Where Moevao threw a strike to WR Darrell Catchings running a slant in the end zone for a four-yard touchdown reception to tie the game at 17-17.

Oregon State was getting the momentum back as DT Stephen Paea was able to sack QB Tony Pike for the 2nd time of the day, forcing the Bearcats to punt after a three-and-out. The Beavers now had a chance to take the lead heading into the 4th quarter, but OSU would also go three-and-out. The fans were starting to get ancy as Cincinnati suddenly was able to convert on three consecutive third downs behind the passing of QB Tony Pike. Just as the Bearcats had crossed into the red zone, Pike lobbed a high arching pass to the corner of the end zone where WR Marcus Barnett caught the ball over his shoulders for an 18-yard touchdown to regain the lead for Cincinnati 24-17 with 4:33 left to go in the game.

The Beavers were in trouble and when Moevao was sacked yet again on 3rd down deep in OSU territory, the Beavers were forced to punt after another three-and-out with 3:44 left in the game.

Cin7.jpg

OSU QB Lyle Moevao is sacked for one of the sixth times of the game.

It was up to the Bearcats to put this one away. The OSU defense could not get the Bearcats off the field as Tony Pike made clutch pass after clutch pass to keep the chains moving. Finally, Oregon State appeared to make a stop on 3rd down to force the Bearcats into attempting a long field goal, but a flag was down. "Personal foul," the referee announced. "Facemask on the defense. Fifteen-yard penalty. Automatic first down." Reser Stadium went beserk as the fans booed the officials. However, for the viewers on television, the replay clearly showed that FS Suaesi Tuimaunei grabbed the facemask.

Cin8.jpg

OSU FS Suaesi Tuimaunei called for a costly facemask penalty.

With the penalty, the Bearcats drive was kept alive. However, the defense would hold, but Cincinnati would put a 25-yarder through the uprights to go ahead 27-17 which effectively ended the contest. Fittingly, the game ended with QB Lyle Moevao being sacked for the the sixth time of the game. After the game, Bearcat head coach Brian Kelly was available for comment, "This is a huge win for Bearcat football. We know how badly the Beavers wanted to win this game the way we beat them at our homefield a couple years ago. The Beavers are a good football team. We were lucky to play them early as they never get off to good starts. They'll win a lot of games this year so I can't tell you how excited I am that we beat these guys here in this stadium."

After this disappointing loss, Oregon State will start confernce play next week, hosting Arizona, a team that nearly beat OSU last year in Tucson.

Cincinnati 27

Oh well. I guess that's the misstep game. You probably won't lose to anyone more but SC, Cal, and Oregon, huh? As a matter of fact, you ought not lose to anyone else but SC...

Sorry, it's been a while guys. I'll try to get an update on the game of the week today. No promises. I have not had any time to play the game, much less, write updates. But after this weekend, I should hopefully be able to get back to updating more regularly again.

Week 3

#18 Nebraska Takes Down #6 Virginia Tech in Blacksburg
Neb-VT.jpg

Nebraska SS Larry Asante's pick-six in the 3rd quarter would prove to be the difference.

Blacksburg, VA - A night that matched up the Big-12 and the ACC for another good non-conference game on the year. The Hokies had already proven themselves to be contenders after an early win over Alabama. This would be just the kind of win that Bo Pelini and the Cornhuskers would be looking for to restore confidence. The Hokies attempted some trickeration on their opening possession that would backfire as HB Darren Evans our of the "Wild Turkey" formation threw an interception. Nebraska QB Zac Lee would take advantage of the opportunity by throwing a ball over the top to WR Niles Paul who made a terrific 34-yard reception with two defenders draped all over him. But the Huskers could only manage a 23-yard field goal to go ahead 3-0. That would be all of the excitement of the 1st quarter as both offenses struggled to do anything.

But the Hokies would finally counter with a 32-yard field goal in the 2nd quarter to tie the game 3-3. Later, QB Tyrod Taylor would wake up the crowd with a 24-yard touchdown pass to WR Dyrell Roberts to give the Hokies a 10-3 lead. The Cornhuskers looked like they were going to respond as QB Zac Lee led Nebraska into the red zone. Just as it looked like the Cornhuskers were on the verge of tying the game, Lee was picked off in the end zone by VT CB Stephan Virgil to take the game to halftime.

To start the 3rd quarter, Nebraska made it all the way to the VT 21-yard line where on 4th-and-one, QB Zac Lee lofted up a pass into the end zone to WR Niles Paul where it was broken up. Despite the 4th down failed attempt, the Cornhuskers would tie the game when Lee hit WR Menelik Holt for an eight-yard touchdown to tie the game 10-10. On the ensuing possession, VT QB Tyrod Taylor would make the mistake of the game as he underthrew a pass that was easily intercepted by Husker SS Larry Asante and returned for a touchdown to put Nebraska on top 17-10.

Then in the 4th quarter, Lee would connect with HB Quentin Castille for a 31-yard gain to get Nebraska inside the 10-yard line. Where Lee would connect with WR Chris Brooks in the back of the end zone for a nine-yard touchdown to make it 24-10 Nebraska. But the Hokies were not out of it yet as QB Tyrod Taylor connected deep with WR Danny Coale for a 46-yard gain to spark Virginia Tech's offense. However, with 4:11 left, the Hokies failed to convert on 4th-and-six, turning over the ball to Nebraska. Fortunately for the Hokies, Nebraska quickly went three-and-out. And with 1:48 remaining Taylor found TE Sam Wheeler for a five-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 24-17.

Virginia Tech's onside kick would fail but Nebraska was forced to punt with 1:32 left in the game after a quick three running plays. The punt would be downed at Tech's own two-yard line. But Taylor was not fazed by the pressure, leading his team on a brilliant last chance drive without any timeouts. With only :05 remaining, the Hokies were all the way at the Neb 12-yard line and it was 4th-and-two. Taylor dropped back to pass, threw a lob to the corner of the end zone, but the ball sailed out of bounds as the Cornhuskers escaped Blacksburg with a major road win.

Just want to have the Pac-10 teams listed that are in the Top 25. I guess that is kind of confusing. I can't believe a TE has been in the Heisman Watch list for two straight weeks.

I'm going to be away all this weekend until probably Sunday afternoon. Hopefully, then I can get back to doing this regularly.

Good stuff Emac. Oh one quick thing. On your last game against Cincinnati whats up with your first video highlight?

Oh. Those were the highlights of the Oregon State-Cincinnati game a couple years ago where the Bearcats blew out the Beavers 34-3.

Chris: Welcome to Happy Valley for a huge Big Ten game. These fans are thinking about revenge today. Last year it was Iowa that ended Penn State's undefeated season with a last second field goal. (crowd boos) Well, last week we saw some upsets and some close calls. Boise State's chances at a BCS run probably came to an end after the Broncos got thumped 41-9 by Fresno State. The Hurricanes took down a favored Georgia Tech team and Rutgers nearly lost to FIU. But the most surprising of all was that Ohio State, maybe still feeling the pain from a close loss to USC, barely beat Toledo 28-25. But the biggest news from last week was that Florida QB Tim Tebow was left the game with a pulled groin. Fortunately, it should only keep Superman out for a couple weeks. But now with Tebow out, the Gators could be vulnerable..

Kirk: I just fail to see how the Hawkeyes stand any chance today against a much more talented Penn State team. (crowd cheers) I mean QB Daryll Clark is playing as well as anybody. And then you add HB Evan Royster. Plus, their great defense is led by MLB Sean Lee who is on every scout's radar. The Nittany Lions avenge their loss today. (crowd cheers louder)

Lee: Kirk, you're right. It is difficult to see how the Hawkeyes could win tonight. I can't think of one reason that Iowa should win tonight, but of course nobody thought that the Hawkeyes could beat Penn State last year either. If Iowa is to have any chance then their defense is going to have to play fantastic and they will count on MLB Pat Angerer to lead the way. Of course everybody thinks Penn State is the more talented team and Iowa has no chance. Here you go guys...one of the first...Not so fast! (Lee puts on the Hawkeye headgear as the cheers turn to boos) Go Hawkeyes!!!

Arizona (2-1) at Oregon State (2-1)

Corvallis, OR - After a close loss to Cincinnati last week, the Beavers were looking to rebound against Arizona in their first conference game of the season. Despite being 2-1, Oregon State could not feel very confident after having to come back against UNLV and then falling to a Cincinnati, a team that most felt was not as talented as the Beavers. Now the Beavers would face the Wildcats, a team that inexplicably lost a game to the Beavers in Tucson last year. A game that kept Oregon State's Rose Bowl dreams alive at the time. When these two teams meet, there usually is not a whole lot of points scored, and today's game would prove to be no exception.

Defense dominated early on as the Wildcats went three-and-out. Then OSU QB Lyle Moevao was sacked on third down to force the Beavers to punt. A trend that is becoming a common theme this season for Oregon State. But Arizona would be the first team to put an actual drive together as the Beav defense was just able to keep the Wildcats out of the end zone in the red zone to force an Arizona 28-yard chip shot to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead.

Oregon State's offensive line continued to release the floodgates on Moevao as he would be sacked three times before the end of the 1st quarter. To start the 2nd quarter, the Beavers were forced to punt after a three-and-out. But Arizona also was held to a three-and-out. Finally, Oregon State got something going offensively as they moved into Wildcat territory, but on 4th-and-three at the Arizona 26-yard line, Moevao was sacked as the crowd booed the play call.

The Wildcats responded by marching all the way to the red zone, where they were stopped inside the five-yard line on another goal line stand for the Beaver defense. As a result, the Wildcats scored on a 20-yard field goal to go ahead 6-0.

With under a minute left, Moevao attempted a last-minute drive but the possession came up empty when the senior QB threw up a prayer that was up for grabs. The ball was easily intercepted by Wildcat SS Robert Griffin as Arizona took their lead into halftime.

If the situation did not look bleak already for Oregon State, it would get much worse when WR James Rodgers left the field with a back injury after the opening kickoff of the 2nd half. Rodgers would not return for the remainder of the game. Not long after James Rodgers left the field, his younger brother, HB Jacquizz Rodgers left the game holding his chest. But it did not stop the Beavers from producing their best drive of the game as Moevao found TE Howard Croom in the flat who took in for a 31-yard touchdown. The crowd came back to life with the first real applause from Reser Stadium as the Beavers took the lead 7-6. It was then that the viewers learned that Jacquizz Rodgers had bruised ribs but would continue to play.

Arz1-2.jpg

But the Wildcats would not waste any time responding as QB Matt Scott hit the outstanding TE Rob Gronkowski who ran through an arm tackle and took in for a 39-yard touchdown to regain the lead for Arizona 12-7 as a two-point attempt failed.

Arz2-2.jpg

A good return by WR Reggie Dunn would put the Beavers in business at the Wildcat 42-yard line. After a couple of good passes by Moevao, the Beavs were in the red zone, but after a pass was broken up in the end zone that was intended for TE Howard Croom, Oregon State was forced to settle for a 25-yard field goal to make it 12-10 Arizona.

The Wildcats appeared to be in position to put another touchdown on the board but the OSU defense came up with another goal line stand to force a Wildcat 28-yard field goal to start the 4th quarter with Arizona going up 15-10. On the ensuing possession, Oregon State would be held to another three-and-out as Moevao was sacked yet again. Later, on what looked like a good run by Arizona HB Nic Grigsby, but OSU CB Patrick Henderson was able to knock the ball loose as the Beavers recovered the fumble, setting up OSU would terrific field position. However, on the very next play, OSU HB Jacquizz Rodgers was stripped of the football by Zona CB Devin Ross, and the Wildcats recovered and returned it all the way for a touchdown as Reser Stadium sighed in disbelief. The Wildcats put the ball through the uprights for the extra point to give Arizona a 22-10 lead as fans started filing out.

Arz3-2.jpg

It definitely did not look good for Oregon State but Moevao engineered an impressive drive, maybe the best of the season as he finished off with a strike to TE Howard Croom in the end zone for a nine-yard touchdown to make it only 22-17 Arizona.

Arz4-2.jpg

OSU TE Howard Croom with his 2nd touchdown reception of the game to give Oregon State a chance.

With all of his timeouts left, OSU head coach Mike Riley decided to put the game in the hands of his defense and not attempt an onside kick. But when Zona HB Nic Grigsby broke off an 18-yard run, his best run of the game with 1:49 left, the game was all but over. QB Matt Scott would throw a completion for a 1st down and the Wildcats would line up in the victory formation, downing the ball and Oregon State fell to 0-1 in the Pac-10.

#6 Penn State Comes Up Short in OT Against #17 Iowa
Iowa-PSU.jpg

PSU HB Stephfon Green's fumble in OT ended the game.

State College, PA - A cold, rainy night in Beaver Stadium was where the Nittany Lions would look to avenge their loss to Iowa last year that cost Penn State a shot at a national title. It looked like the Lions were in business to score when QB Daryll Clark converted on a 4th-and-18 in Hawkeye territory to set up the Lions inside the five-yard line, but the Iowa defense came up big to hold PSU to a 19-yard field goal as Penn State went on top 3-0 after a very long, methodical drive.

But Iowa responded with an impressive drive of their own as QB Ricky Stanzi was hot. Finally, HB Jeff Brinsen leaped over the pile for a 2-yard touchdown to put the Hawkeyes ahead 7-3 going into the 2nd quarter.

All was going well for the Hawkeyes until QB Ricky Stanzi slipped and then quickly got rid of the ball into coverage where it was picked off by PSU CB AJ Wallace. The Nittany Lions would take advantage as FB Larry Federoff bulldozed his way in for a 2-yard touchdown to put Penn State back in front 10-7.

However, the Hawkeyes quickly got back into the red zone where this time Stanzi stepped up confidently into the pocket and connected with WR Derrell Koulianos for a nine-yard touchdown to regain the lead for Iowa 14-10. But the back-and-forth scoring continued as QB Daryll Clark responded for the Lions by hitting WR Brett Brackett in the end zone from four yards out to put Penn State back in front 17-14 heading into halftime.

Both defenses would step up their game in the 2nd half, but Pen State would get bad news when their outstanding CB AJ Wallace left the game with an abdominal tear which looked pretty serious. The early diagnosis is that Wallace will miss 12 weeks. Iowa would tie the game 17-17 with a 39-yard field goal.

Early in the 4th quarter, the Hawkeyes were forced to punt from their own end zone because of an oustanding punt by PSU that pinned Iowa inside their own five-yard line. However, even with PSU starting inside Hawkeye territory, they went three-and-out, forced to punt the ball away. Fortunately, the Lions would get the ball back and HB Evan Royster started picking up 1st downs in the run game as Penn State started pounding the rock. With :40 left, PSU connected on a 21-yard field goal to go ahead 20-17. But the Hawkeyes still had two timeouts with :32 left in regulation. Iowa QB Ricky Stanzi did was asked of him and then with :07 left to go, the ball was handed off to HB Jeff Brinson on a draw which took Penn State by surprise as Brinson got a 17-yard gain and got out of bounds. With :01 left in regulation, Hawkeye kicker Trent Mossbrucker knocked through a clutch 36-yard field goal to tie the game 20-20 to sent the game to overtime.

In OT, Iowa could only manage to attempt a 36-yard field goal where it looked like it was going to miss but the ball hooked inside the upright to put the Hawkeyes ahead 23-20. The game would come to an end when PSU HB Stephfon Green fumbled the ball which the Hawkeyes recovered as the Nittany Lions fall to Iowa again.

The Beavers received their first commitment from the top TE prospect in the nation, Joe Allen from Spring Valley, California. Allen is a very good blocker in both the running and passing games with excellent footwork, and has been known to pancake a defender from time to time. But he also can make a clutch catch in traffic and will likely be OSU's future QB's best friend.

Terpscheer610x.jpg

fowler_chris_000.jpg

Chris: Well, it has been a while for these fans in College Park to see a game that has any kind of appeal nationally but that is what we have here today as the Terps will try to stay unbeaten. They will have to do it against Clemson whose only loss came against Georgia Tech, the game where the Tigers lost their excellent tailback, CJ Spiller who suffered a broken wrist. A win for the Terps put them in position to make a run at the ACC Championship. The same could be said for the Tigers so this is an important early conference matchup.

Well, last week was quite a weekend for college football as the Tebow-less Gators fell to Kentucky. USC had to score 17 points in the 4th quarter to escape a monster upset against Washinton State. This Maryland team right here absolutely destroyed a favored Rutgers team. (crowd cheers) But of course Clemson had a big win too last week, upsetting TCU. And last but definitely not least, Arizona State was able to knock off Georgia between the hedges. The Sun Devils will host a struggling Oregon State team. People are starting to get on the Sun Devil band wagon after the big win against the SEC Georgia Bulldogs, but look out for the Beavers today. Another game to check out today with be #6 Alabama who will have to play the undefeated Kentucky Wildcats. If Kentucky can win, then we will have to take them seriously. So let's get to it....

Kirk_Herbstreit.jpg

Kirk: You know, at first glance, I do need to take this Maryland team seriously. They have a senior QB in Chris Turner who has looked good so far, throwing 11 touchdowns and only four interceptions. And they have an impressive HB in Darel Scott. The problem is that I don't think the Terps are going to find it easy to score against a terrific Clemson defense. However, the senior QB Turner is the difference as I see the Terps continuing their unbeaten run. (crowd cheers)

corso_color.jpg

Lee: I will say that this will be closer than the experts think and your right Kirk, at first glance you do have to take the Terps seriously. But come on, that doesn't mean they're gonna win sweetheart! (crowd boos) Clemson's defense will be dominant today and the Tigers will dominate the line of scrimage on both sides of the ball. I also look for Tiger WR Jacoby Ford to have a big game. The kid is really fast, I mean really fast. Zip-zip-zip and he's gone. That's it...(Lee pulls out the Tiger headgear as the crowd boos the pick) Go Tigers!!!!!
