Big Ten - Texas?

Prepare folks..from what I'm hearing, this has a better chance of happening than any other school currently in discussion. My money is definitely on it happening.

Hate it or love it, Big 10 brings in plenty of money and it is a draw for a lot of schools for academic and financial reasons. Big 10 has long wanted to make a splash and has targeted Notre Dame. Since we know ND isn't happening, Texas is the next logical university that has been discussed for a long time. Texas looks at the Big 10 as a much better place to be than the Big 12. That's a fact.

I think one of the Big East schools should move to the Big Ten, like PSU did... I'm thinking Syracuse or Rutgers. I think it could help SU's recruiting. Cowherd brought up some good points for Rutgers... Plus the aforementioned Pitt....

Penn State was an Independent like Notre Dame, not from the Big East.

All bring nice resumes to the table. When you look at Rutgers and Syracuse, you're looking at solid athletic programs (not so much for Syracuse football or Rutgers basketball) and a chance to tap into the New York market. The Big Ten adding a team from the NY area would be HUGE for the Big Ten Network.

I already mentioned Texas's resume, and although Pittsburgh doesn't really help with the BTN, they bring back the PSU/Pitt rivalry and help out the academic prestige as well.

Who would the Big 12 take to replace them? For some reason, Indiana popped into my mind, and then B10 could take Tex-Austin and TAMU, which I heard would have to be part of the deal.

Indiana wouldn't leave the Big 10 .. they are probably the most prestigious basketball team in the conference.

My guess would be either Texas/Oklahoma/Texas A&M or Missouri or Pittsburgh/Syracuse/Rutgers.

If they take Texas, they're gonna have to take TAMU, I believe is the understanding. Missouri/Oklahoma could be interchangeable. I like the Big East picks better... Though I would like to see WVU, SU/Pitt/RU makes more sense.

I think this is a good move for the Big 10 in terms of their tv network. It brings the Texas and the states around Texas (A lot of people are Texas fans) into the Big 10 Network for TV deals. However, why would Texas really leave the Big 12? Travel is farther for conference games and there isn't a huge price jump (at least I don't think it's that big, I could be wrong.)

Didn't someone say that Texas couldn't get into the Pac 10 before? I'm not too familiar with the whole Texas trying to leave the Big 12 so it just doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Oklahoma/Texas is a great rivalry too, as well as playing Tech and TAMU. I don't think Texas vs Penn State every year would be as big of a draw as Penn State/Pitt or Texas/Oklahoma.

If it's for money, the Big 10 bringing in Texas is a done deal. They bring in more money football then either of the other schools mentioned (Pitt, Missouri, Rutgers, Syracuse just don't bring in that type of money). The other question would have to be do teams like Penn State/Ohio State/Iowa etc. want to travel to Texas for a road game every year? The location of it sucks, but the whole money aspect could outweigh that decision.

I just wish the Big 10 would announce their decision or make an offer and get it over with. Don't drag it along.

WVU is no where close to meeting the academic requirements of the Big 10

This has nothing to do with money and everything to do with academics, as strangely as that sounds. Texas has been trying for years to get into a conference with a better academic standing than the Big XII.

The Big Ten demolishes most conferences in the US for academic prestige and Texas is desperate to be noted in the same regard.

Texas will make money and lots of it regardless of what conference it plays in. Could they make more in the Big Ten? Sure, it has the richest of all contracts and the most followers of any conference. But to say it is influenced by money when Texas already makes as much or more than nearly any Athletic Department in the country is delusional.

This has far more to do with academics and the push by faculty to be thought of like Michigan or the other Big Ten Schools than it does money.

UT tried to leave the other Texas schools behind once before after the Southwest conference broke up and the Texas legislature quickly shut that down. Before people get all worked up about this it is a huge hurdle to clear and something I just just don't see happening.

I don't think - due in large part to the aforementioned Texas legislature - Texas will be going anywhere without TAMU and TTU.
