Unless they are overbidding the market by like 20 million dollars I don't see an issue.

I don't want Fielder at all unless it's for 110 million or less. Brewers offered 6/100 or 6/120 (can't remember which) and they turned it down because they are looking for 150+ and maybe an 8 year deal. Any team who pays 8/150 or more for Fielder is insane.

His defense is pretty bad, and he's going to go downhill in a few years.

If the team can afford it, i'd give him whatever he wants. The team is built to win now. The idea is to win championships, not to ensure financial sensibility 6 years from now. I can't see him falling off a cliff anytime soon.

I looked up a few players of similar skills and body, and when they fell off the shelf offensively:

Boog Powell - 34
Cecil Fielder - 33
Frank Howard - 35
Greg Luzinski - 33

Prince was 27 this past season. I think you will get 4 more years of current production for sure, with maybe 2 or 3 more years after that where he slips a bit, under performs the contract, but is still useful.

If i'm a Brewers fan, I want this guy back, and i'll worry about the back end when the time comes. Win now.

Agreed. That's in a perfect world though where the only goal for the owner is to win a championship, they have to make money though. I don't have the Brewers financial records but I'd imagine their margins are pretty razor thin. They aren't a rich team by any means and have been by and large spending beyond their budget. Granted, they've been getting good fan support but the last thing they need is a bad season or two, fans stop coming (in the smallest market in baseball) and a albatross contract sitting on their ledger.

Plain and simple they can't afford to be bad and expensive. They just can't.

I'd do everything I can to give him a ton of money for the next 3-4 years. The fact is, even with those names you put there, heavier players regress at a way faster rate and do so earlier:

Trust me, I think Prince has 2-3 years of absolute prime awesome production. As a small market team though I have to be worried about years 4-7, it's just the way teams like the Brewers have to think when they got for big money deals.

In Fielders defense he's a big guy but he seems like the type that really takes care of himself(Ortiz) as opposed to a fat guy who is just a lump of shit(Mo Vaughn).

I agree with what you are saying, particularly the bold. I guess where we differ slightly is I would be willing to gamble on an extra year or two of good production in exchange for a real shot at winning this thing in the next two or three years.

This, of course, assumes they have the money to sign him to begin with. If they flat out can't afford him, this is all moot.

This is my best guess at the opening day roster and payroll. If Braun is suspended, Logan Schafer or Caleb Gindl will likely take his place. Taylor Green, Cesar Izturis, and some of the bullpen guys aren't guaranteed to make the team, but they are certainly the front runners at this point. Other players would cost a similar amount.

The total payroll comes out at 101.4275 M!

I think the key transaction for Milwaukee this offseason was K-Rod sticking it to them by taking the arbitration. He ended up with less money than last year, and it helps solidify a decent bullpen that lost a couple of veteran parts. It was a blessing in disguise.

With the contract signed, I think the Brewers could easily trade Rodriguez if they wanted to. With the incentives, it's a 9.25 M deal, IF he gets 30 saves. That's a lot cheaper then the 13M estimates we've been hearing for the last month. Of course, I really don't see that happening, the roster is pretty much full at this point. I could see them signing an experienced first baseman with the money saved, but that improvement would be immaterial, now that the team is committed to using Hart at firstbase.

The Brewers rotation, and bullpen will definitely be the team's strengths this year. I don't know if they can limit the run scoring enough to remain competitive though.
