Woy's Word
I felt a rush running out with my teammates onto the court of Fifth Third Arena. It was our conference opener and this Cincinnati squad was surprising a lot of the Big East writers. They were inconsistent, beating teams like Duke but also losing to Mount St. Mary's.
The arena was extra packed for this game cause I think they wanted to see if I would play or not. There were a few negative cheers directed my way, and a constant reminder of the football score against the Bearcats; 51-12. We were really cold and were down 15 with eight minutes left in the second half when I got the call from Coach Boeheim.
...
"Woy!"
"Yeah Coach?"
"Get in there."
...
"Now checking in for Syracuse, freshman guard Ethan Woy."
...
As I jogged onto the court, I was greeted with a shower of boos mixed in with a few cheers of the Syracuse faithful willing to make the trip. I stood out of bounds, got the ball from the referee, and threw it in to Jonny - signaling the start of my collegiate basketball career.
Right away, Jonny called 'Circulation' which was a play that I came off two screens to get an open shot. I rode my guy away from me, setting up the screen and got open just inside the arc. Calmly, I leaped up and let the basketball graze off my fingertips towards the basket.
Swish.
Unfortunately, Cincinnati put the clamps on me the rest of the night and I only hit three of nine shots after the first one. The last one, with us down by 18, was a thunderous dunk that even got the Cincinnati student section cheering for me. Maybe it was because they were blowing us out, or that they had a respect for my talent - I don't know.
The only thing I know is that we lost...bad.
