Georgetown - Round Two
at
Syracuse Orange (14-7) at Georgetown Hoyas (12-6)
Woy's Word
My guarantee not only caught the attention of the Syracuse faithful, but it really irked the Georgetown fans. The news hit the major press and the college basketball analysts talked about it on ESPN.
...
"...and that brings us to a huge Big East rivalry game in Georgetown/Syracuse. Earlier this week the two schools faced off in the Carrier Dome and despite a big game by Syracuse's star freshman Ethan Woy, the Hoyas beat the Orange, 87-77."
"Speaking of Woy, lets take a listen on what he said after the loss."
...
"Do you think you can win on Saturday at Georgetown?"
"Yes, we can. Georgetown's a good ball club, but I still think we are better. We will come out with a different mindset, step up on defense and take round two of this matchup. I guarantee it."
...
"Strong words by the confident freshman. Jay, what do you think about this guarantee?"
"I personally don't like it and I have no clue what Boeheim is doing out there with this kid. Letting him make guarantees? He wouldn't have let that happen with Carmelo Anthony a few years ago. It seems to me that the stress of all these losses - especially when they were supposed to contend for a national title - has really gotten to him. Digger, I don't know what's going on there at Syracuse, but it's going to affect this ball club. Georgetown big."
"Yeah I agree Jay. Jim needs to put a leash on his players and not let them make comments like this. Woy will learn, he's only a freshman. But guaranteeing a win did more to hurt his team than to help it. Georgetown's going to come out angry and ready to beat down Syracuse."
...
A chorus of boos accompanied me as I ran out of the tunnel with the rest of my team. I scanned the student section to see multiple blue shirts with a graphic that appeared to be my face. They read "Alcohol and losing don't mix" made me relive part of my controversial past.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
"You're a fucking failure! Do you know that? You don't deserve any of this shit handed to you. You didn't deserve that money from Michigan, you didn't deserve that State title, and you sure as hell didn't deserve Melyssa!"
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Surprisingly though, I let the haunting past not faze me and it showed on the opening tipoff.
...
"Syracuse wins the tip and we are under way here at Georgetown. Flynn kicks up to Woy who forces a very early shot...good! Woy hits from three and Syracuse takes and early 3-0 lead!"
...
The game went back and forth, trading points, words, and cheap shots. It was tied with 2:30 left before Georgetown took a two point lead. Coach wanted to talk things over with us and called a timeout. We discussed how we were going to mix things up on defense and as we broke the huddle, Jonny pulled me aside.
"You letting that crowd get to ya?"
"What?"
"That's what I wanted to hear, haha. Play your game bro, if you're feeling it, keep shooting. Lead us to this victory."
Jonny was right. No one really said it publicly, but right now this was my team. The game was riding on my shoulders and was I going to take advantage of it like at Everett, or falter like I did against West Virginia?
...
"Woy's open for three...count it! The star freshman gives them a two point lead!"
We got a turnover on Jeremiah Rivers and went on a fast break down the court. Jonny had three options: drive down the lane to try to pick up the foul, pass it to Andy and give him an open layup, or kick it to me in the corner all alone. Guess what he chose?
"Woy for three again...good! Woy's on fire folks!"
Georgetown then tried to push it themselves and fed the ball into the post area for Greg Monroe. Monroe made a great drop step and I reacted by leaving my man. Just as he went up to take the shot...
"Monroe loses the handle! Woy stripped it from him and is coming the other way! He flashes down the court and...takes a contested three...it's money once again! There is no stopping this kid right now! Coach Thompson has seen enough and will call timeout!"
A one point deficit quickly turned into an eight point lead just like that. They hit some baskets to cut it to four and were pushing the ball up the court with 40 seconds left.
"Rivers looks for an open teammate...passes it in to Monroe. Monroe spins off his defender and goes up...it's blocked by Woy! Woy made a great read and left his defender to cleanly block the shot! Flynn gathers the rebound and is fouled! What a game by the young freshman!"
As Flynn took his shots, I stood there staring at the student section with a smile on my face. The boos started to shower down upon me as I shrugged my shoulder and mouthed "maybe next year."
Needless to say, Jay and Digger ate their words and we were back.
