I agree with you that it is something a coach says but don't rip another coach when you did it the first chance you got. Like I said I have no problem with him leaving just the way he did it

It may not matter what he said a couple years ago, but then he goes on radio in Cincinnati a week or so ago and says, "Why would I leave Cincinnati?" I love it here!"

I know the guy has won everywhere he has gone, but considering how the luck of the Irish has been, I forsee in five years, ND looking for ANOTHER coach.

By then, they will have hoped to figure out a way to clone Knute Rockne.

What is he supposed to say? Assuming he was asked, he can't keep silent on the issue, and he can't say that he's considering taking the job either. Any coach is in a no win situation there. If he doesn't publicly say he has no intentions of leaving when asked, he'll be chastised anyway for looking to jump ship before his team's bowl game and becoming a distraction.

Furthermore, what happens if he publicly says that he'd consider leaving and negotiations fall through? What does he say to his players when he returns? IMO, he has to affirm he wants to stay at his current job to prevent a potentially larger mess if things don't work out.

Again, any coach is in a no win situation when he gets asked about listening to or considering other job offers, and I don't think it's worth moaning over after one decides to leave after saying something to calm the fanbase.

I know coaching is basically a mercenary job these days (not to all, though...look at a guy like Jim Leavitt)...but saying that to your players is pretty fucked up and lacks tact.

Yeah when I first heard him say this I was like Bizzaro. Then he went out and said it multiple times, during his ND press conference, then in some other interviews after that. It's like in his head he thought it was some awesome sound-byte so he just kept repeating it. Something about him seems really corny and fake.

And I don't really feel bad for Cincy or their fans, especially since they probably stole him away from CMU the same way ND stole him from them.

Agreed. In a perfect world could he have handled it better? Sure. But this is the real world and shit happens. I suppose he could have refused to give interviews at alls o he couldn't even be asked the question but I would imagine that would be next to impossible to do seeing as he is the coach of a team that is set to play in the Suger Bowl.

As for the radio exchange, I actually think he called into a sports call-in show and said that. My mind's a bit fuzzy, but he went on and on about how he loves Cincy, and how he's not done building the program, etc. etc. I know they played the clip on Sportscenter.

Just come right out and say you're interested in the job. It's better to be truthful than say, "Oh I love it in Cincy. I'm not going anywhere" and then a week later, you're being introduced as the head coach of the Fighting Irish.

I didn't think he called in. I thought he was doing a scheduled interview with the Dan Patrick show?

EDIT. My mistake. He told a local Cinci radio show he was staying on Tuesday the 1st.

Then he told Dan Patrick on the 7th he would know his future by Saturday admitting he was talking with ND but also working with UC on a contract extension.

LOL. Yeah because you can prove he purposely made them the last to know. If ND doesn't leak the story it's all hushed and Kelly can tel his kids behind closed doors at the banquet....which was his plan. What's he supposed to do before that? Call each one individually and tell them?

Like the Cinci team would be any less pissed if Kelly told them first. Their issue is that Kelly told them he wasn't going and he did go. Like them finding out "first" would have made it any better.

ND is to blame for this and should have kept a better lid on it. It's too bad really because they were tight lipped as hell on everything else the entire process.

There is no way around this type of scenario that happens EVERY SEASON (Brian Kelly is simply the latest) because the way the college football season is set up allows for this type of thing.

More than HALF of all FBS teams are going bowling, meaning the other half (ie: the half that are making coaching changes) are basically in the "off-season" while the other half still have a month+ of season until they go to the off-season.

The only way to stop this from happening is forcing a "no communication" rule that deems other schools can not talk to other coaches about openings until that coaches season is officially over...meaning, if ND wanted Brian Kelly they'd have to wait until the day after the Sugar Bowl to talk to him.

It puts the school with an opening at a disadvantage on the recruiting front, but, at the end of the day, I think my aforementioned solution is the most fair to all involved.
