Cincinnati players last to know about Kelly's departure.

There's a report on a Cincinnati news station that Kelly hired a PR firm to lobby him for the ND job in the days following ND's loss to Navy.

I dont have a problem with him leaving, but damn atleast wait until the end of the season to switch school. Especially with a BCS bowl game right around the corner

Impossible to do since recruiting for Notre Dame basically has already started. And if you're trying to turn around a 6-6 ball club, you dont want to lose 4 weeks of recruiting before you start your new "dream job"

so, what else is new ? Coaches move around to multiple teams constantly its the nature of the job.
Any 19 year old who is smart knows its a waiste of time to get upset about this. His job is to go to school and do the best he can on the field to keep his scholarship or possibly make it as a pro.

as long as you dont get a Bobby Knight or the idiot from Kansas. A coach is just a coach. A kids spends 4 years with him and moves on. Being upset about a coach moving is just a waiste of time.

also- of course youll keep it under wraps until your sure you get the job.

On WFAN the other day, a caller brought up an interesting situation. What if Cincinnati had been playing in the national championship game. There's no way he could bail out on the team in that situation.

If that ever comes up in the future, it will be mighty interesting.

Odd that they feel this way but they wouldn't even come out for the Orange Bowl last year when given free tickets.

they sold 13,500 tickets from their allotment to the Orange Bowl, but Waddell said the school estimated that nearly 30,000 Cincinnati fans actually attended. Because the Orange Bowl and BCS title game tickets were sold in a bundle, many who had purchased the package for the national championship game unloaded their Orange Bowl tickets for dirt cheap on the Internet, and lots of Bearcats fans went that route, Waddell said.

If you actually watched the game instead of going by numbers, you could see tons of Cinci fans at the game and this is the reason why.

They sold a horrible amount then the tickets got cheaper and some were even FREE . A good number attended but they couldn't even sell out with some being free and most at a cheaper price

Even Orange Bowl officials spoke of their dissapointment with Cincys turnout

The problem is, as I mentioned above, in the infrastructure of the NCAA and how freely coaches can move around.

There needs to be rules and regulations to communication with coaches and schools much like there is in the NFL and there is in the NCAA in regards to recruits...as is, basically, coaches can sign, re-sign, quit, take other jobs, etc whenever they want and there is no violation made...

I happen to think taking a coach after the regular season in the bowl season is just as bad (might even be worse) as taking a coach from another school after week 4 or in the middle of the season.

The NCAA, more than anything, needs to fix this and not allow communication between coach/agent and other teams until that coaches season is complete.

If the NCAA is a business, and it is, especially in regards to personnel and staff...it needs to be treated like a business and in this regard regulations need to be put into place like the NFL does, for example.

If teams break these rules...big time sanctions...

Schools can't (they still do...but alas) talk with other teams student athletes in regards to transfers and they shouldn't in regards to coaches and staffs.

I was a fan of neither team, and I went to the Orange Bowl...even the Cincy "fans" that showed up were crap, yuppy "fans"...they just sat in their seat and didn't do shizz.

For a major bowl game...the turnout at last years OB was terrible.

The Sugar Bowl will be a sea of Gator blue and orange and those fans will be ridiculously rowdy in comparison to the Cincy fans...

And either way you put this, it was a shitty way of doing it. Whether Notre Dame leaked it or not, you don't tell your players you don't plan on leaving and they find out you actually are leaving from someone else. The fact is, if he was pursuing the Notre Dame job, which he obviously was, then you have to be open and up front about it to your team. When it comes down to it, the players were more pissed that it took him so long to admit he was leaving and the fact that it was already heard from ESPN. How do you expect players to react?

I just think that Kelly had ample opportunity to be up front with his team. Who cares about the AD or the school, the team is what got you into the national spotlight. That team put Kelly's name on National Spotlight this year and I just think it was shitty. It's over now and it's going to continue to happen throughout college football because that is how college football works. But the way it was done needs to be fixed. The season is still going on right now and they need to institute a rule that if a team has accepted a bowl invitation then they can't be poached for another coaching opportunity. This ruins the season that Cincinnati had because the coach that led them to an undefeated season is leaving.

All in all, I think most of us can agree that it was a shitty way of handling the situation and could have been handled better. And I'm not even talking about his statements (That he made over and over about not leaving Cincy) but just the fact on how he "broke" it to his players.

Exactly . OB officials spoke about how dissapointed they were with the turnout overall especially Cincy . It's one of the reasons why they said they weren't going to look at Cincy this year and turned to Iowa who hold the Orange Bowl record if I'm not mistaken

They still had alot more unused tickets than VT (reportedly) even when some were free . That isin't going to go over too well with the OB officials . Nobody said they didn't bring a decent amount of fans ... we simply asked where this "amazing" Cincy fanbase that people speak of was when in their last bowl game

Yeah .... just checked up and Iowa still holds the Orange Bowl record with a reported 50,000 fans! travelling to the OB last time . Expecting Boise to travel that far in force would have been a horrible choice and no way they wanted to touch Cincy again this year .
