Clean hit? Joe Mays suspended one game

i wanted to discuss this outside of the pro/con thread. Glen seems to think this was a clean hit. im glad he posted the pic because i was pretty mad when i saw this hit. In todays game, this is the definition of what the NFL doesnt want. I felt like the player deserves nothing less than a 1 game suspension for this. the severity of the hit, the helmet to helmet contact, the fact it was on the QB (which always garners special attention by the league)....and mostly because of the utter stupidity of this player for hitting someone like this. WTF is he thinking?

(I still contend that is a clean hit BTW)

From this angle it looks like the helmet made contact with the shoulder/chest, IMO.

However, it was clear he wasn't going for a wrap up tackle but went for the blow-up, intent to injure hit. Fine is a comin'.

This isn't the 60s-90s anymore. If they allowed the players to hit with the intent to hurt there would not be a league anymore.....everyone would be hurt at some point. Even worse it would turn into a bunch of D3 QBs running offenses.

he easily could have just blown right through his mid section, had plenty of time to choose where to make the contact IMO.

Anyone who saw the replay from the front of Schaub could see that it wasn't helmet to helmet contact and it was the sheer force of Mays' hit that caused the helmet to come off. The hit wasn't late and the only thing that could possibly be considered illegal was that Mays led with his head, but if he would have dove and hit Schaub in the leg that's a penalty too so I don't really know what you expect the guy to do when he has timed his hit almost perfectly and is already coming full speed.

And yeah there was a call on the play which extended the drive on a 3rd down. Happened twice on the same drive. Von Miller's flag was definitely warranted because he drove the QB into the ground after the ball was long gone. But this was just a bang-bang play where the refs reacted to Schaub flying backward and his helmet coming off more than the legality of what Mays did.

BTW this play gets flagged and the DHB play goes without a call... Once again there is no consistency among league officials right now so it's hard for players to know what they can or cannot get away with.

That's the thing.. I have no idea anymore.

Peyton Manning was clearly horse collared last week against Atlanta but apparently the horse collar rule doesn't apply to QBs in the pocket... I guess if you're in the pocket it's far less dangerous to be pulled down by the back of your neck.

You're probably right... I guess part of it is me being the kid who grew up loving Steve Atwater more than any other defender I've ever seen play. In today's NFL Atwater would be too much of a liability to have on the field because of the way he played and hit guys.

If he takes the time to adjust his body to form tackle then he gets there late and it's a flag... If he goes at Schuab's legs, it's a flag. He got there a split second after the ball was thrown using his full forward momentum, by the time he was at the QB there wasn't much he could do to adjust.

I'm sure it's against a ton of NFL rules but I think you guys who are convinced as to how easy it is to make a correction like you're suggesting running full speed have probably never played the game before or at least never played defense.

Unfortunately what they look at is the result of the hit/tackle. I have never played pro football and I can see that is is ridiculous fast...but to a pro football player it is not fast to them. This looked pretty clear that he went for the hit and not the tackle.

I would suspend him a game to try and make him realize that the QB is a protected commodity in the league.

I don't think anyone is saying it was helmet to helmet, we're saying it was clearly a dirty hit. You cannot lead with your helmet anymore and frankly, anyone who puts their helmet square into someone's chest is not using good form and could easily break their own neck. Schaub's helmet popping off made it look worse, but it was definitely the wrong way to deliver a hit.
