Of course the trainers get paid. But since when did it become the promotion's responsibility to do that? Does Zuffa pay Greg Jackson directly? Unless every other fight camp out there is getting their cut direct from the promotion, why should GG and M1 be different?

I'm not making any argument, i'm just explaining to bigpapa why Zuffa is against these deals.

My personal opinion is that these groups like GG and M1 are just leaching off of the fighters and Zuffa. If the fighters want to be fleeced, that's their business. But I can see why Zuffa wouldn't be down with this. What do they have to gain from an association with GG? Nothing. It's 100% in GG's favor.

The other big part of this is the exclusivity. Zuffa is not going to allow outside bookings in any contract. You can debate the merits of that, but they do try to give everyone three fights per year. They have allowed fighters to take outside fights in the past when they had nothing for them, Houston Alexander comes to mind, but they will never put that in a contract for obvious reasons.

To be fair Coker did not have a choice. He wasn't getting Fedor or Overeem or Mousasi etc without these deals. The fighters had the leverage and were in the position of strength, so Coker made deals with the devil. He rolled the dice, and it didn't work, because when his heavyweight champ wanted to spend a third of the year kickboxing and fight a grand total of one time as champ in three years, it was in his contract. It's the other way around with Zuffa. They are dealing from the position of strength, so it is what it is.

They did better than any other show competing on that level, but luck was needed just like what happened to zuffa, oh well

I don't get mad at fighters making money, worry about the fighters more and zuffas money less, mma fighters make less from they profits than any other sport, zuffa actually, not mma as whole

There is a difference between "supporting" this, and understanding where the company is coming from.

With Overeem, there is many levels to that story, and I don't want to rehash it all here. I'm not sure I would have cut him, but he was already trying to strong arm the company, so he really would have had them over a barrel if he beat Bigfoot and was no longer under contract. At the end of the day, they felt he wasn't worth the trouble.

None of these cuts are particularly egregious imo.

I get what SF was trying to do, why they did it, and why it really didn't work out. I'm not "mad" at fighters trying to get paid. Nor do I find it wrong or deplorable for Golden Glory or M1 to try to do what they feel is in their best interest. They all have every right to do that. But Zuffa, like any business, also has the right to protect its interest too. Are they greedy and somewhat shady? Sure, but again, its business. I can only begrudge them that so far when they put out a product that I predominantly enjoy. I'd love to see the fighters get paid more, for any number of reasons, but I don't particularly see how blaming Zuffa for absolutely everything negative that happens in the sport accomplished... well, anything...

Am I happy that these three and Overeem got released? No. But I don't see the point in freaking out and screaming "EVIL" every time Zuffa releases someone, regardless of their motivation. What was lost here? A solid fighter in a division that is not exactly in a position to grow, a heavyweight with moderate upside, and a bum. As for Alistair, he seems to have zero interest in giving up his K1 which makes him signing with Zuffa full-time unlikely anyway.

I don't remember if I said it here or somewhere else, but I think M1 and GG should go "all in" and do Overeem/Fedor on Showtime. If they are really interested in this idea of co-promoting, that is the best route they can go, by pitting the two biggest non Zuffa stars against each other in a dream fight. People will make fun of it, because Fedor never wins anymore and the mystique is gone, but just like Tito/Ken they will watch. Fedor still draws, plus the hardcore Fedor fans think the stoppage was fast.

You should be happy Zuffa plays hardball, because they keep cracking the door open for other orgs to pick up talent. The worst thing that can happen in this sport is not Zuffa cutting people, it's a sport with one relevant org, and unfortunately we are dangerously close to that occurring.

rob, Golden Glory had a similar extortion deal like M1, where they were getting a piece of the pie when their fighters were on shows. Not a purse percentage deal that individual managers cut with individual fighters, but a separate cut from Zuffa (in addition to what Zuffa pays the fighter), which was usually substantially higher than what the fighters were being paid. Who knows how much they were kicking to their fighters, but if i'm Zuffa, fuck that shit, I wouldn't do business with them either. These were sweetheart deals that M1 and GG cut with Coker because they knew they had him by the balls.

(although cutting the Techno Viking was probably out of spite, since I believe he won FOTN bonus in his only fight, which was a loss to Blueberry Muffin IIRC)
