Friday’s joint statement from Colts quarterback Peyton Manning and owner Jim Irsay was described on these pages as “a bucket of water on the burgeoning brush fire.”

The embers are getting stoked again and we aren’t referring to the news that Bruce Arians is headed back to Indianapolis to be the Colts’ new offensive coordinator. Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network is reporting that the Colts have already made their decision about Manning’s future with the team.

“According to sources who were involved in the Colts’ GM search, the organization was planning to move on from Manning weeks ago, well before this public squabble between the quarterback and his owner,” La Canfora said. “So Friday’s joint statement won’t be changing a thing.”

Per La Canfora, the team will cut their ties to Manning before the scouting combine. The combine begins on February 22nd, well ahead of the March 8th deadline currently in place for the team to give Manning $28 million or set him free.

If you’re getting tired of the speculation about what will happen in Indy, we can’t blame you. We also think there’s a good chance you’ll look back at these days fondly if everyone moves onto frenzied speculation about where Manning will go next.

Wonder if it's strictly them moving forward or if there's still sincere concerns about whether he'll be able to play. If so, whoever ends up in a bidding war over him will be in a tricky situation when it comes to how much in guaranteed #s and how much will be based off performance.

I actually agree with Dave here. The Colts need to rebuild.. they're in cap hell and you don't rebuild with a 36-year old QB at the helm, no matter how great he may be when he's 100% healthy.. you rebuild with a 21-year old QB who is significantly cheaper and gives you a solid 10-15 years at that position (assuming he doesn't have a significant injury knock him out), not someone that gives you 1 or 2 years.

As for Manning, if he's healthy, he can be like Favre was with the Vikings. He can take a team that has talent but is missing a QB and take them to Super Bowl contender status. Several teams fit that criteria.

The media will make this a huge dramatic story, but in the end I think it's better for both the Colts and Peyton himself. Peyton wants one last crack at a championship, the Colts need to build for the future so they don't become the AFC version of the St. Louis Rams. To me there's really no other way around it.
