Dell's Pointless Lists - Greatest Black Quarterbacks

You could combine the IQ of the bottom 5 guys, and they'd be lucky to hit double digits.

Posting a list like this, is just another way to mock black quarterbacks. That list is packed full of shit. The only reason Doug Williams is listed, is because of that one superbowl. His career is a complete fucking joke. He was one of the most ignorant athletes of all-time. I wouldn't hire Aaron Brooks or Marlin Briscoe to shine my fucking shoes.

I prefer to think of it as illustrating just how recent its been since black quarterbacks have started showing up in the NFL with some regularity. We're roughly talking about a decade, maybe 15 years since there were at least 7 or 8 of them employed in the league on the regular basis. Sorry, you're just not going to come up with 10 HOF worthy guys in that time frame. Hell, I doubt there are 10 HOF worthy qbs of any race that have played in the last 15 years.

As far as Marlin Briscoe goes, I'm not suggesting he was a great qb. What I am saying is that he was at least as good as, if not better than, what they had and instead of being given a chance to win the job, he was shipped off to Buffalo.

In Buffalo, he wasn't even allowed to play the position and was moved to WR. Buffalo's QB? The aging, no longer effective Jack Kemp. That season, 1969, Kemp's popularity earned him another trip to the Pro Bowl despite the fact that he was only the 9th rated quarterback in a 10 team league and threw 22 interceptions, 2nd most in the league. In fact, Kemp never threw more tds than picks in a season - not once. Briscoe managed it in his only season playing the position.

To his credit, Briscoe would eventually make the Pro Bowl as a WR.

And I love how Jeff Blakes 134 TDs got listed, but his 39-61 record wasn't.

To be honest, it's a list that's at least meant to be positive so I'm guilty of omitting some less than desirable facts. Sue me.

Warren Moon not only is the best black quarterback of all time, but one of the best quarterbacks I've ever seen. And I'm a huge McNabb fan. You put Moon in a conventional offense this guy would have won a couple super bowls.

Not sure I'm following your logic, especially since he played on some of the best offensive teams of his era. Aside from that, what he "would've done" is irrelevant. I love Moon, but McNabb has gotten his team to 5 conference championship games and a Super Bowl.

Marlin Briscoe gives the black community a bad name in every sense. He couldn't play, and he couldn't handle the pressure of life after a failed NFL career, so he ended up as just another black, recovering crackhead, who we now credit for ''changing his life around.'' Well, gee, he did make the pro bowl as a WR.

He's a piece of shit, period. NFL wise, and off the field.

Still, the stereotype of the black quarterback as a running back who happens to line up under center persists. Indeed, many have struggled adjusting to the pro game. I have a theory about that. Many of these guys were the best athlete on the field by a good margin throughout their high school and college careers. This led to wins as they had the ability to just “make something happen” whenever a play broke down. As long as this improvisational style led to victories, coaches who benefited weren’t going to chance lessening the effectiveness of their signal callers by trying to force them to go through their progressions, read defenses, look off defenders and learning other subtleties that go into playing the position at the highest level. So by the time they reach the NFL, they often haven’t had the same tutelage as their white counterparts.

I think Moon is easily the top guy, because he's in the HOF. I highly doubt McNabb will ever get to the HOF. I would put Cunningham as #2, but perhaps my memory is cloudy. McNabb & McNair are in the top 4, but after that the list is pretty sad. Kordell Stewart was pretty bad. I guess he was the opposite of Marlin Briscoe...he probably should have stayed a WR.

Damn, did you really have to crucify the guy? Did he do something to you personally? Nobody is questioning his merits off the field, otherwise Warren Moon's wife beating ass wouldn't be on this list. As a QB, Briscoe had a chance and got shelved in favor of Kemp, fact. Whether or not he could hack it long term is a different matter.

Let me break down Briscoe's life.

Thing is, I'm not talking about "his life." I'm talking about at that moment after the '68 season, before anyone, Briscoe included, could know what would become of him. Yes, he only completed 41% of his passes but in an era when league wide comp % was below 50, I'd hardly call that a failure. Add to that, the league also threw far more ints than td passes at that time, yet he actually threw more tds than picks. He also started for less than half a season & was top 6 in the league in yards, touchdowns and rating. Again, hardly a failure. We don't know if he "couldn't hack it" long term as a qb because he wasn't given a chance. Again, all those other things that became of him, happened well after the point in time, I'm referring to. I never said he was a model citizen, just not given a fair shake at the qb position.

However, I still maintain that McNabb consistently being a winner in the regular AND post-season (at least compared to Moon) plus some very nice stats of his own trumps Moon's stats and sheer playoff failures (at least in the NFL).

Moon on a bad day could still throw the ball much better than McNabb. McNabb usually has one, maybe two really good passing games a season. Moon would have 7 or 8.

Give me gaudy stats and HOF inductions instead of 'consistently being a winner'. Moon's teams were always in the playoffs, too.
