I started as a hunter, but your starting class really has little bearing other than what your starting stats are. You can build yourself into whatever you want.
My guy is kind of a jack of all trades, has most things bumped up so I can be decent with melee/ranged/magic. I find the balance works great because using the most effective attacks vs each enemy is the best way to approach the game. Limiting yourself without magic/range would suck for sure...
I'm heading off but I'll post my stats tomorrow.
You need to head into Shrine of Storms (you'll lol at the enemy style, it's intense. my comments were "holy shit, HOLY SHIT, FUCKING HELL I"M OUT!" and I didn't go back without help. even now at level 50 I'm VERY careful in that world...it's just so deadly. lol) but only about 6-7 guys in there's a weapon off to the side (crescent falchion) which is a very very nice sword. with help you could easily get it.
hits for like 140 phy and 110 mag. items that do magic on top of physical damage are just so pimp. blocks don't do shit to magical damage.
You are lucky you went royalty, from what I've heard that's the best starter class. The Regen ring, starting at level one (some classes start at like level 5, so you lose a few levels of personalizing your stats) and is the easiest class to use on 1-1.
You are almost high enough to meet up with me
