ok, as a mage, i wouldnt listen to jay....lol. I disagree with several things he posted here.
the only thing i agree with is Blood Mage and willpower/magic.....
For Talent Points. - Willpower and Magic ONLY...
Cunning - you only need 16 points in cunning to get Master Coercion Skill, which is a MUST HAVE for anyone. you will also need 16 for Master Survival. Absolutely no reason to use more than 16 points for a mage
for skills,
Master Coercion Skill IS A MUST!
Stealing you dont need this because u will have a rogue for it
Trap-Making kind of blows imo. i wouldnt touch this
Master Survival - is one you really want to have
Herbalism. your gonna have a companion that has a higher level to start. they can make the high level stuff when the times comes for you to need them. until then, you can make level 1 crap because its open by default. level up the companion
Poison Making - i would at least have the first slot unlocked. This will allow you to USE poisons, which is a real good thing to have. level up a companion if you want higher level shit. u can use it if you at least have level 1 unlocked
Master Combat Training - this level 4 skill is a must for everyone regardless of class
Combat Tactics - For you, dont touch it...its pointless. For your crew...u might want to get this to at least level 2 or 3 to add more combat tactics. you are controlling your guy, so u dont need to level this up...unless u plan to control a companion

For Specialty - Blood Mage. from there Arcane Warrior and Spirit are equally good, but different. Dont waste your time with shapeshifter. I chose Blood Mage and Spirit Healer.
For Spells, you should already know that to unlock a level 4 spell you have to unlock the previous 3. So I am going to post the highest level spell you will want to get in each tree. Which means you would have to unlock the lower level stuff too. I am basing this off of my experience with the spells, coolness of the spell, power of it, and fun factor in beating the shit out of bad guys. hehe
Special Spells
Blood Mage - Blood Control Level 4 (priority)
Spirit Healer - Cleansing Aura Level 4 (priority) (note, u will have a companion with this specialization so you might opt to use arcane warrior if you plan to keep this companion with you. this means you will play as a mage/tank...and having 2 mages in your party...which isnt exactly the best option)
Arcane Warrior - Shimmering Shield L3 - u can get L4, its not bad, but not a priority
Normal Spells
Arcane Tree - Arcane Mastery L4 (priority)
Primal Section
Fire Tree - Inferno L4 (priority)
Earth Section - Petrify L4
Cold- Blizzard L4 (priority)
Lightning - Tempest L3 (priority)
Creation Section - NOTHING - GAY GAY GAY. unless you want to play as a homo, forget about this area. spirit healer is way better and cover all these lame spells.
Spirit Section -
Anti-Magic Tree - NOTHING
Mana Alteration Tree - NOTHING
Death Tree - Virulent Walking Bomb - L3 (priority)
Telekinesis Tree - Crushing Prison - L4 (priority)
Entropy Section - NOTHING. There are some ok spells, but nothing thats gonna make you want to use them. they dont look cool and dont do any real damage. The Draining tree is really the only one to consider

i loved playing as a mage....once u get rolling its a blast. i would try and side quest to level up as much as u can. the choicest spells take time to unlock...but when u do they are kick ass!
