Pretty good pickup by the Falcons. Smith is a pretty decent TE if he can stay healthy.

Smith is a back up, not a starter, heap aint going anywhere, the ravens are doing what they do, sign depth and build thorough the draft

Smith at times can be a productive, but he always seems to be hurt, which is odd because the same could be said for Todd Heap. However, at one year, $1.5 million I say this is a good deal. At this point it appears the Ravens are going to open up the offense more, so their getting weapons for Flacco.

LJ Smith, isn't even in the 2nd tier of TEs in the NFL. The guy can't block, has cruddy hands and horrilbe route running skills. And to top that he is injury prone.

Why is it a big deal where he ends up?

i heard on espn a few days ago that mel kiper jr. thinks baltimore might draft a tight end like pettigrew in the first round. and this was after they signed smith. i lul'd.

I think the signing makes more sense then not actually. Baltimore could use the backup TE to Todd Heap. Not only could they run more 2 TE sets, but ontop of that Heap has been hurt the last 2 years, it's been since 2006 since he's played 16 games. Why not shore up some depth with Smith, a lesser man's pass-catching TE to play behind Heap and spell him if any injuries creep up this year.

Not to mention he won't be the starting #1 TE in Baltimore obviously...so that implies that he'll have less of a chance of getting injured.

Heap started every game last year...

He is on the downside of his career though. Too many hard hits from DBs/LBs stretching out for terribly thrown balls from Redman, Boller, Wright, etc, have shortened his career. I still don't really like the Smith signing but it makes sense.
