Yeah but you can get to the last book pretty quickly whereas the show paces itself enough for me that I can wait to see the visual gore of each death and subsequently read about it in more detail later on when season is over

I guess I see your logic, but the books do a much better job than the show. I saw the first season before I started reading this season. I finished the second book before watching that season. I can say, hands down, that every season since the first one was enhanced by the books, and the first book was not enhanced by me seeing the show first.

I watched the first two seasons and then read all of the books. I liked it that way because I had an image of the world and characters to work from ... did the same with Harry Potter.

Now when I think about things that are going to happen in GoT, I sometimes can't remember if I imagined it while reading or if I actually watched it happen in the show.


And since I have done both, I know reading the books with new events is just as exciting as watching the show with new events. I was flipping shit when reading the red wedding and celebrating my ass off when reading the purple. Same goes for when I watched Ned's head fall in season 1.

But I'm impatient and want to know what happens as soon as possible. That's why I prefer the books.

Also, I'll admit it is not as exciting watching season three as it was reading the third book. But reading books 1 and 2 were torture after watching seasons 1 and 2. So yeah /endrambling

Here's my very basic breakdown of how I feel in terms of books to movies.

Book 1, very good book, with the season being remarkably close to the source material.
Book 2, okay book with great moments but at times extremely boring, season 2 veers quite a bit at times, almost always for the better.
Book 3, fucking amazing, top to bottom. Seasons 3 and 4 have veered quite a bit, but mostly to good results (not always an improvement, but still pretty good -- I feel there is a lot of "works in the book, wouldn't work on the show" moments.
Book 4, underrated book, already making appearances this season. Super curious to see what next season is like melding this book and book 5.
Book 5 I really struggled to get through, so I'm curious what a reread will do for me.

I dunno that was pretty much my takeaway at first. For one, it is a pretty tremendous ass, and for two it's a pretty fucking dense pilot episode if I recall. Waves and waves of nondescript bearded british men in grey and black and charcoal cloaks, lots of talky exposition catching you up on hundreds of years of backstory, and the Robb/Theon/Jon relationship is kind of unclear. Couldn't figure out who was related to whom #etc

Then of course I dove into dozens of re-watches, plus the requisite background reading and became immersed.

You know, one thing Clarke misses in her portrayal of Daenarys while she is on her high horse of anti-nudity beyond season one is her transformation into a sexually confident being. It is a big part of her character that Clarke completely misses by refusing to show the goods.

Either way, I agree overall. We're definitely not getting that sweetass, one-titty out Meereen garb. EDIT - and I think that that's a big part of the character in a lot of ways, even outside of the boner side.
