Oregon State (1-0) at #12 Penn State (1-0)
State College, PA - The Beavers have achieved some success in the last few years but one thing they have not been able to do in this stretch is win against a quality team on the road. Oregon State gets into these nationally televised non-conference games against quality teams but does not play well. Beaver fans might want to look away at this point. Last year it was Cincinatti that beat the Beavers badly. In the past, the Beavers have lost to Boise State and Louisville in blowouts as well. Then there was the heartbreaking loss to LSU.
The Beavers would get a chance to put the past behind them and open a new door if they could only beat the #12 Penn State Nittany Lions at Beaver Stadium which is never an easy task. However the Penn State crowd had other plans for Oregon State as the Beavers were greeted with an unfriendly welcome from the rowdy fans.
OSU would not help their situation any as Penn State quickly got on the scoreboard when PSU QB Daryll Clark found WR Derrick Williams deep on a corner route where Williams went up and made the grab. Then Williams spun out of a tackle and took it to the house for a 57 yard TD to give the Nittany Lions a quick
7-0 lead.

Things would go from bad to worse though when OSU was forced to punt to Williams. On the punt return Williams would break out of a weak tackling attempt and make his way for the sideline and then cut back where he found a whole lot of green. Only P Sean Sehnem was left and Williams made a quick side step and Sehnem whiffed on the tackle as Williams found his way in the endzone for the second time of the 1st quarter to put PSU up
14-0 with the 88 yard punt return.
It would appear it could not get any worse for the Beavers but OSU QB Sean Canfield tried to get a ball to WR Sammie Stroughter on a curl route but SS Lydell Sargeant snagged it away for an interception. It really appeared that Canfield was completely rattled by the Penn State fans and the big plays by Derrick Williams did not help matters as the stadium just seemed electric.
Finally, the Beavers got a break when OSU CB Brandon Hughes got an interception. The turnover would lead to a 15 yard TD pass from Canfield to WR Kyle Brown. Canfield threw a laser in the back of the endzone in tight coverage on the play. It was probably one of the most impressive passes of his career. The touchdown put OSU in the game down only
14-7.
The Beavers seemed to tighten up their pass coverage as Clark was unable to connect with Williams as easily as he was earlier in the game. This would eventually lead to Clark throwing another interception. This time it was CB Keenan Lewis with the pick as Clark was attempting to connect deep with Williams but it was overthrown for an easy interception.
Unfortunately, Canfield could not capitalize on the turnover as PSU CB Lydell Sargeant would pick him off and return it to the OSU 27 yard line. It appeared PSU would take a two score lead but Clark threw a terrible pass into the endzone which was easily intercepted by OSU SS Bryan Payton. It would be
14-7 Penn State at the half.
In the second half, Oregon State would try to get a ground game going fairly successfully as HB Jeremy Francis was finding the holes. This allowed a playaction that found WR Chris Johnson wide open across the middle of the field where Canfield threw a strike. Johnson made the catch in stride and easily sped into the endzone for a 37 yard TD to tie up the game
14-14.

It all seemed to be going well for Oregon State. They had calmed the crowd. The defense was shutting down the PSU offense. Francis was running well. Unfortunately, all that came to an end when the Beavers found themselves deep in their own side of the field. Canfield threw a duck that was easily picked off by CB A.J. Wallace who easily took it back for a pick-six to put PSU up
21-14.
Just like that, OSU found themselves down by a touchdown. Clark almost put PSU up by 14 but TE#82 dropped a ball in the endzone which forced a FG to put the Nittany Lions ahead
24-14 going into the 4th quarter.
The Beaver offense put together a 13 play methodical drive that was finished off with a one yard TD run by HB Jeremy Francis to make it
24-21. Penn State would march back down the field to the red zone. Unfortunately, Clark would throw another red zone interception trying to connect with WR Deion Butler but OLB Isaiah Cook was there to make the pick.
Oregon State would have a chance to tie the game with just a field goal. Canfield led the team down the field. The lefty QB finally would find WR Chris Johnson at the 4 yard line. The ball was thrown behind him and Johnson made a nice catch. It appeared OSU head coach Mike Riley would have to make a decision of whether to go for the win from the PSU 4 yard line or kick a field goal and tie the game for OT with only :11 on the clock.
However, it was determined by review that Johnson had trapped the ball and it was ruled incomplete. The Beavers now found themselves in no man's land. A field goal would be tough from that range but it would be a gamble to try and get more yards. With :11 on the clock, Canfield took a snap out of shotgun but he could not find anybody open. Instead of alertly hurrying out of the pocket and throwing the ball away, Canfield took a costly sack. OSU would be forced to try a 56 yard FG attempt. Penn State head coach Joe Paterno called a time out to ice the kicker. The suspense was quickly gone as OSU K Justin Kahut kicked a dud which landed in the middle of the endzone. Oregon State lost another heartbreaker on national television on the road against a quality team.
