ND WR Marcus Neal celebrates his third TD reception of the game.

Ann Arbor, MI - The Fighting Irish struck first when red shirt freshman CB Frank Whaley picked off Michigan QB Andy Johnson. Which set up a 36-yard field goal to put Notre Dame on top 3-0. However, on the ensuing kickoff, Michigan HB Daniel Mayo blazed through a small opening and housed it for a 91-yard kick return to put the Wolverines in front 7-3.

After neither offense looking particularly good in the 1st quarter, the Irish finally won the battle of field position when QB Allen Bell put together a good looking balanced drive and hit WR Marcus Neal on a screen that went for a 7-yard TD. 10-7 ND. The Irish would get the ball back after another CB Frank Whaley interception. But then the Irish received their toughest news of the season when ND red shirt freshman HB Kyle Caesar (84 ovr) left the game which was later determined to be a complete ACL tear. Caesar, the promising, young tailback that the Irish fans have already dubbed the nickname of "Little Caesar" is done for the year. Though the Irish were able to score on the possession when Bell on a playaction pass connected with WR Marcus Neal again for an 11-yard TD to put Notre Dame up 17-7. Although Michigan cut it to a one-score game when they tacked on a 31-yard field goal to end the half down 17-10.

The Wolverines opened the half with a 50-yard field goal to make it a close 17-13 lead for Notre Dame. Unfortunately for Michigan, nobody decided to make a tackle on the ensuing kickoff. As ND true freshman HB Adam Cameron after dropping the ball, picked it up and brushed off a defender, spun by another defender, juked another defender, dodged another defender and was off to the races to house the 95-yard kick return. Thus increasing the ND lead to 23-13.

<embed width="600" height="361" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullscreen="true" allowNetworking="all" wmode="transparent" src="http://static.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid515.photobucket.com/albums/t354/Emac78/Go%20Beavs/ND-MichCameron95-ydkrtd.flv">

Then on the ensuing possession for the Wolverines, disaster struck when QB Andy Johnson threw his 3rd interception of the game. Not long after, ND QB Allen Bell threw a ball right on the money to WR Marcus Neal on a deep post who had gotten by the coverage for a 38-yard TD. For the third time, Bell had connected with Neal for a touchdown and now the Irish were ahead 30-13.

<embed width="600" height="361" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullscreen="true" allowNetworking="all" wmode="transparent" src="http://static.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid515.photobucket.com/albums/t354/Emac78/Go%20Beavs/ND-MichBelltoNeal38-ydtd.flv">

After Neal's third touchdown, it seemed all but decided. Very late in the game with under two minutes left, Michigan did get back on the scoreboard because of a Notre Dame lapse of coverage when 6'7" true freshman QB Jared Bentley (83 ovr), in for the injured Andy Johnson who was out with a pinched nerve, slung it deep to WR Mike McCray for what went for a 70-yard TD. But it was too late as the Irish showed the country they are very much just as good as last season with a 47-20 thumping of the rival Wolverines in "the Big House."

Chris: We are here in Death Valley for a huge SEC game. (crowd goes wild) This conference is still trying to recover from the shockwaves of a humongous upset last week when Florida fell to BYU on a field goal in the final seconds. (crowd cheers louder) Georgia has the chance to beomce relevant nationally again if they could get a win today over LSU. (crowd boos) A win for the Bayou Bengals will show the rest of the nation that LSU is ready to compete for the SEC title. Before we get to making our predictions, I understand Erin has an update on whether HB A.J. Butler will be able to suit up today. Erin...

Erin_AndrewsEA.jpg

Erin: Thanks Chris. LSU's junior HB A.J. Butler (89 ovr) is listed as probable for today's game so he should finally get his chance to start in a big game. With already five touchdowns in the early going of this season, the Tigers are happy to have him on the field. Guys, back to you...

Chris: Thanks Erin. That's good news so we will be able to see both of these exciting tailbacks today. So are you picking guys?

Kirk_Herbstreit.jpg

Kirk: Butler has been sensational so far for LSU, but the guy I'm looking to see have a big game today is UGA sophomore HB Brian Marks (85 ovr, 99 spd, 99 acc). The kid is a track star playing football or maybe it might be the other way around, but whatever the case, he is just really, really fast. And speed kills. LSU's defensive line will have its work cut out for it today. I could see Marks having a big game for the Bulldogs. That's why I'm picking the Dawgs to win today. (crowd boos)

corso_color.jpg

Lee: Look at that Kirk. You got the crowd all worked up against you. You better watch out. These teams are really even so I think this will be a close game. But who am I picking? No way can I pick against this crowd! (Lee pulls out the headgear)

Offensive Explosion
LSU-UGA.jpg

LSU HB A.J. Butler scores five touchdowns while rushing for 288 yards to be named the NCAA Offensive Player of the Week.

Baton Rouge, LA - It was Georgia's chance to get back on the national stage but awaiting the Bulldogs was Tiger Stadium, one of the toughest places in all of college football to get a win. After a quick three-and-out for Georgia, LSU gave the ball to HB A.J. Butler up the middle where he did not see anything. So he decided to spin out backwards to try to get to the outside where he did another spin move, but was able to make his way to the sideline. Butler was then off to the races where he turned on his afterburners to house a 76-yard run to bring Tiger Stadium to a frenzy and give LSU the early 7-0 lead.

<embed width="600" height="361" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullscreen="true" allowNetworking="all" wmode="transparent" src="http://static.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid515.photobucket.com/albums/t354/Emac78/Go%20Beavs/LSU-UGAButler76-ydtdrun.flv">

To only add to Georgia's struggle, the Bulldogs would miss a long 56-yard field goal wide right on their ensuing possession. But LSU QB Jamaal Landrum gave up the momentum when he was picked off by UGA OLB Lawrence Christian. The Bulldogs took advantage of the good field position when speedster HB Brian Marks (99 spd, 99 acc) broke a few tackles and found the end zone on a 17-yard run to tie the game 7-7.

Though the Tigers would regain the lead on a Landrum to WR Brett Ortiz 11-yard TD pass to put LSU in front 14-7. Georgia responded with a methodical drive to the 22-yard line mainly because of some hard-nosed running by Marks. But when HB Trent Hood came in to spell him, he was plastered by LSU MLB Terry Kendrick for a fumble which was recovered by the Tigers. Shortly after, Landrum gunned it deep over the middle to WR Matthew Mayes (97 spd, 98 acc) on a post who caught in stride for a 77-yard TD. 21-7 LSU.

<embed width="600" height="361" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullscreen="true" allowNetworking="all" wmode="transparent" src="http://static.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid515.photobucket.com/albums/t354/Emac78/Go%20Beavs/LSU-UGALandrumtoMayes77-ydtd.flv">

The Bayou Bengals continued their domination in the 2nd quarter as Butler scored on a 1-yard goal line run up the gut to put LSU up 28-7. Georgia only countered with a 28-yard field goal. Then the Tigers marched right back down the field where Butler ran right up the middle, cutting back and forth where nobody could make a tackle as he scored again on a 15-yard scamper to put LSU in front 35-10. Unbelievably the Tigers got the ball back one more time and Landrum connected with Mayes on an 11-yard TD in the final seconds to close out the half with LSU up 42-10.

It looked hopeless for the Bulldogs but Georgia suddenly turned it on. LSU made a stop in the red zone to force a 23-yard chip shot to make it 42-13. But suddenly LSU's offense went ice cold and UGA HB Trent Hood scored a 7-yard TD run to make it 42-20 LSU. LSU ended the 3rd quarter missing a long 54-yarder wide right. Tiger Stadium was getting a little anxious.

Then Georgia marched back into scoring positions where HB Brian Marks got outside to score a 3-yard TD run, and was able to also score the 2-point conversion to suddenly cut the Tigers' lead to only 42-28. Now ahead only two touchdowns, LSU was feeling some pressure and Landrum was intercepted by UGA MLB Brandon Brittain. The Bulldogs were now in position to try and make it a one-score game. But LSU's defense came up big. It was now 4th-and-7 in Tiger territory where UGA QB Anthony Merritt threw a pass that was deflected and the crowd went berserk. Only a minute later, LSU HB A.J. Butler iced the game with another electrifying TD run of 51 yards to bring Tiger Stadium to even more of a frenzy. 49-28 LSU.

<embed width="600" height="361" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullscreen="true" allowNetworking="all" wmode="transparent" src="http://static.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid515.photobucket.com/albums/t354/Emac78/Go%20Beavs/LSU-UGAButler51-ydtdrun.flv">

It would actually get worse for the Bulldogs when on the ensuing possession LSU CB David Bell picked off Merritt and returned it all the way for a pick-six to put the Tigers up big 56-28. But the scoring was not done by a long shot. Merritt hooked up with WR Pat Pino for a 38-yard TD to make it 56-35. And then LSU countered back with Butler getting his 5th TD of the game on a 1-yard run up the middle to make it 63-35. Georgia continued to play as if the game was still not decided and it cost them big time when their speedster HB Brian Marks went down with a hip fracture that will cause him to miss the rest of the season. But backup HB Trent Hood came in and housed a 71-yard run for a final score of 63-42 in favor of the Bayou Bengals.

Chris: Welcome to Columbia where we have a Big-12 duel between the Texas and Mizzou. (crowd cheers) The Longhorns were considered one of the top teams in the nation to start the season but an early loss to Tennessee has knocked them off the tracks. Of course, their rival Oklahoma was also derailed last weekend against Oregon in Norman. So the South is not off to a great start but the Big 12 North is looking strong with teams like Missouri and Nebraska. Mizzou came on strong last year behind their big-time QB Blake Ford but he is gone and it appears this year's starter Doug Harris is still out with a strained back he suffered in the first game of the season. The Tigers have yet to play anybody so this will be a huge first test. When we get back from the break we will of course get to this game but there are some other important games elsewhere around the nation to get to...

Chris: Really? Going with the Razorbacks over the Tide? We'll see about that one. Alright, well before we get to the game predictions for today's Big-12 showdown, Erin has an injury report for us.

Easide_262_thumb_180x246.jpg

Erin: Thanks Chris. It looks like Texas OLB Alex Dunbar (91 ovr) who has been out since the Tennessee game with an abdominal tear will be a no-go today also. And as you had already pointed out Missouri is obviously still without starting QB Doug Harris (82 ovr).

Chris: Thanks Erin. Okay, it looks like the headgear is here. Kirk, who are you picking?

Kirk_Herbstreit.jpg

Kirk: I think the Longhorns are walking into a buzz saw today. (crowd cheers) I know that Texas has an excellent QB in sophomore Jimmy Allen (92 ovr) who already has 14 touchdown passes and has all of the playmakers. But I just have a feeling Mizzou wants to make a statement today and those Tiger corners will show just how good they are. With Dunbar out, I think the Tigers will be able to get junior HB Sam Scott (91 ovr) going on the ground. And I'm not worried about junior QB Jason Gray (79 ovr). In this offense, you don't need to have a big arm and he will make plays with his legs. I'm going with Mizzou. (crowd cheers)

corso_color.jpg

Lee: Wow. I didn't see that one coming Kirk. Let me say this. Texas is a better football team. (crowd boos) But I'm not so sure they match up well with Mizzou. Texas Sophomore WR Lamar McCauley (93 ovr) will have his work cut out trying to get open agains a very good Tiger secondary. If Texas finds success through the air it could be a long game for Mizzou because then the Longhorns will be able to get senior tailback Adam Davis (90 ovr) going on the ground against a rather weak Mizzou defensive line. But if Mizzou can get the momentum and this crowd on their side anything can happen. (Lee reaches for the headgear)

Arizona State 1-1
@
#2 Oregon State 2-0

Corvallis, OR - This would be considered the first test for Oregon State since Arizona State is actually a decent team. The Sun Devils' only loss came against Texas. ASU must have felt right at home in Corvallis as it was a comfortable 73 degrees with clear skies in the Willamette Valley.

Arizona State opened the game with a decent possession, crossing into OSU territory, but then QB Craig Noel shot himself in the foot. Noel tested last year's Thorpe and Bednarik award winning CB Deon Weatherford on an out pattern at the sideline. He would pay for his mistake when Weatherford made the interception and sped down the sideline for his 4th pick-six of the season to ignite Reser Stadium. The Beavers were spotted an early touchdown to go ahead 7-0.

ASU1.jpg

The Sun Devils would be forced to punt on their next possession. The Beavers moved right into scoring position. Where QB Ty Moore could not find anybody open, scrambled outside the pocket and found an open WR Bryan Mitchell. The true freshman caught the ball in stride and easily made his way in for his first career touchdown as a Beaver on the 21-yard connection to put Oregon State up 14-0.

ASU2.jpg

After another ASU punt, the Beavers quickly found themselves in the red zone as the 2nd quarter opened. But Moore threw his first interception of the season which was picked off by ASU CB Joe Powell. Unfortunately for the Sun Devils, they would go three-and-out. The Beavers took over in ASU territory. Oregon State moved right back into the red zone where Moore hooked up with WR David Baker over the middle crossing the field and getting into the end zone on a 12-yard TD to make it 21-0 OSU.

ASU3.jpg

The Sun Devils finally fought back when QB Craig Noel connected with WR Quentin Crenshaw over the top. OSU CB Deon Weatherford was able to make a shoestring tackle to save a touchdown, but not before a gain of 48 yards. Noel capitalized on the opportunity to score with a 7-yard TD pass to WR Adam Carter to get ASU on scoreboard. The Beavers took a 21-7 lead into halftime.

ASU4.jpg

The Beavers opened the 3rd quarter with a long, methodical drive that took up over half the quarter. But the Sun Devils held in the red zone as OSU HB John Johnson was unable to punch it in. As a result, the Beavers settled for a 22-yard chip shot to increase the lead to 24-7. Arizona State countered with an equally long possession as they marched the length of the field.

The Sun Devils still had the ball heading into the 4th quarter. The 17-play drive ended on 4th-and-goal inside the 10-yard line with Noel throwing to WR Greg Taum. The ball was just out of reach for Tatum. As a result, he was forced to dive for it. Tatum made the catch but unfortunately he was down at the 2-yard line. The Sun Devils had failed to score after wasting so many minutes off the clock. OSU, with such bad field position could not get a first down and was forced to punt from its end zone. It would not be long before Arizona State was back in the red zone. This time QB Craig Noel was pressured by OSU DE Brandon Webb. Noel threw the ball under duress into the end zone, but it fell right into the hands of none other than OSU CB Deon Weatherford who sped down the length of the field, 99 yards as Reser Stadium roared to life. Weatherford returned it all the way back for his 5th pick-six of the season to put OSU in up big 31-7.

ASU5.jpg

The game was iced when Noel was sacked by OSU DE Brandon Webb on 4th-and-long in ASU territory. The Beavers were able to milk the clock and pass their first test of the season with flying colors.

Mizzou WR Andy Davis with a highlight 77-yard punt return for a touchdown.

Columbia, MO - The Longhorns were the first to get on the scoreboard when HB Adam Davis powered across the goal line on a 2-yard TD rush to put Texas on top 7-0. Missouri countered on the ensuing possession with a 40-yard field goal to make it 7-3. Texas was then held to a three-and-out. Mizzou sophomore WR Andy Davis (95 spd, 97 acc) fielded the punt and was able to find a lane. With only the punter to beat, Davis put a move on him that nearly broke his legs. Allowing Davis to take it all the way to house for a 77-yard punt return and put Mizzou in front 10-7.

<embed width="600" height="361" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullscreen="true" allowNetworking="all" wmode="transparent" src="http://static.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid515.photobucket.com/albums/t354/Emac78/Go%20Beavs/Tex-MizzAndyDavis77-yardprtd.flv">

The Tigers had all the momentum on their side as the Longhorns were again held to a three-and-out. This time Mizzou WR Andy Davis only returned it inside the red zone. Which set up a 2-yard TD scamper by HB Sam Scott to open the 2nd quarter. 17-7 Mizzou. Though the Longhorns fired back when QB Jimmy Allen finished off a drive with a 7-yard TD pass to WR Jared Houston to make it 17-14. However, Missouri countered back with QB Jason Gray finding TE Scott Robinson in the end zone for a 1-yard TD to put Mizzou in front 24-14. The Tigers also tacked on a late 22-yard field goal in the final seconds of the half to put Mizzou up 27-14 at the break.

Missouri would only increase their lead when QB Jason Gray faked a handoff to Scott in the gun, and chucked it to WR Andy Davis on a post who caught the ball in stride and housed the 48-yard reception to put the Tigers in front 34-14.

<embed width="600" height="361" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullscreen="true" allowNetworking="all" wmode="transparent" src="http://static.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid515.photobucket.com/albums/t354/Emac78/Go%20Beavs/Tex-MizzGraytoDavis48-ydTD.flv">

The game seemed all but over but then Gray was picked off by Texas sophomore FS Jerod Merrit in Mizzou territory. The Tigers capitalized off the the turnover when FB Peter Ryan bulldozed in on a 1-yard TD scamper to make it 34-21. Then Gray was picked off again by Texas OLB Maurice Alson who returned it inside the 10-yard line. This time Mizzou was able to make a stand and the Longhorns were forced to settle for a 21-yard chip shot which split the uprights. Suddenly it was only a 10-point game. 34-24 Mizzou. Unbelievably, Gray was picked off again. This time it was SS Steve Howard (91 ovr) with the interception. The Tiger defense again held and the Longhorns attempted a 29-yarder that was doinked off the upright.

After a Mizzou three-and out, the Longhorns quickly found themselves back in the red zone early in the 4th quarter. But on 4th-and-goal inside the 5-yard line, Mack Brown decided to go for the touchdown rather than kick the field goal. QB Jimmy Allen threw a short pass short of the end zone where WR Lamar McCauley was tackled at the 2-yard line. Tiger fans cheered the huge goal line stand. Unfortunately, the stop proved to be a bad event. Taking over at their own 2-yard line, Mizzou QB Jason Gray was tackled in the end zone for a safety on a questionable speed option call out of shotgun. Texas was now only down 34-26 with a chance to tie the game and plenty of time on the clock.

Fortunately for the Tigers, they were able to hold Texas to a four-and-out in Mizzou territory. The Tigers moved into scoring position where they attempted to tack on a field goal to pretty much ice the game but the 43-yarder sailed wide right. The Longhorns took over with 4:32 remaining in the game. However, QB Jimmy Allen was then picked off by Mizzou CB Jeff Motte. The turnover set up a 30-yard field goal which did split the uprights as the Tigers were now ahead 37-26. The Longhorns countered with a long 55-yard field goal that just got over the cross bar to make it 37-29 with just 2:17 remaining.

Missouri recovered the onside kick but then turned around and had QB Jason Gray throw another costly interception. The Longhorns now had the ball with 2:07 remaining inside Tiger territory. After a very inefficient possession, QB Jimmy Allen was able to find WR Lamar McCauley in the corner of the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown with only :11 left in the game. 37-35 Mizzzou. Now it would all come down to the 2-point conversion. Out of shotgun, Allen handed it off to WR Joe West who had motioned in on the jet sweep. West was almost immediately met in the backfield by a host of Tiger defender and wrestled down to the turf. Missouri was able to just hang on for a huge Big-12 win.

Chris: So who would have thought that we would be out here in the Pacific Northwest on the same weekend when the Red River Rivalry is taking place? Welcome to Corvallis where we have an early conference game in the Pac-10 that might very well decide the conference. In the past two years, Oregon State has had a total of two losses, and both of those defeats were at the hands of the Bruins. (crowd boos) But despite those losses, the Beavers have been able to win two consecutive Rose Bowls... (crowd cheers) after a drought that had gone back to 1965. A win today for Oregon State and these Beaver Believers might very well be thinking bigger than the Rose Bowl. The national championship will become a real possibility. Of course the same could probably be said of UCLA if they can make it a three-peat over the Beavs. But we are getting way ahead of ourselves because the Pac-10 is shaping up to maybe being a bit tougher than initially thought with the likes of Cal and Oregon. Oh, and don't forget about that other team in Los Angeles, USC. They are not going away anytime soon. So this game will set the stage for this conference but we still have a ways to go.

Chris: I know that the game here is getting all of the coverage but that game taking place just down the road in Eugene might be equally important. I know the Ducks somehow took care of the Sooners but I think they could be in for trouble against Cal. Just a gut feeling I have. Well, anyways...so have you guys caught the fever? The Beaver fever? (crowd cheers) Do the Beavers take care of the Bruins and line themselves up for a national title run or do the Bruins dash their dreams again? Kirk, you're up first.

Kirk_Herbstreit.jpg

Kirk: I'm drinking the orange kool-aid. (crowd cheers) The Beavers are playing lights out football right now. In their first test against ASU last week, they absolutely dominated a pretty good Sun Devil team. I'm really excited to get to see last year's Jim Thorpe and Bednarik award winning CB Deon Weatherford who amazingly not only already has five interceptions. But each of those interceptions he has returned back to the house. Sophomore QB Ty Moore has been sensational thus far. UCLA's young defense will struggle stopping a surprisingly potent OSU offense today. I think the Beavers run away with this one. (crowd goes wild)

corso_color.jpg

Lee: Kirk, you can't just dismiss the Bruins like that. (crowd boos) UCLA might have the most talented QB in the nation, Bryan Quinn (97 ovr). Kiper has him atop his list and for good reason. And junior HB Clint Donaldson (90 ovr) gave the Beavers fits last year, and this OSU defense is not as good as that one was. This one will be as close a game as you will see all year.
