SCRAPPY TULSA CAN'T HANG WITH THE BIG BOYS...YET.


7-1 Tulsa. 6-2 #12 Arkansas. C-USA. SEC. This was not a game that many thought would be close, let alone competitive. Tulsa was able to hold it's own for most of the game, making big plays on defense to kill drives and tiring out the Arkansas defense with long drives, but it just wasn't enough.

Five plays is all it took for Arkansas to jump to a 7-0 lead. Tyler Wilson found Javontee Herndon on a crossing route and Herndon broke 3 tackles to get into the endzone from 16 yards away. Tulsa wouldn't be as successful on their opening drive, as QB Cody Green threw his first interception of the day in the teams Red Zone.

The second quarter would start out on a good note for Tulsa, as Lowell Rose cut beneath a receiver, intercepted the ball, and took it 63 yards for a TU touchdown. Arkansas answers back, with Wilson throwing to a wide open Julian Horton, who walks into the end zone for a 49 yard td. With 12 seconds left in the quarter, TU kicker Daniel Schwarz knocks in a 22 yard field goal to make the score 14-10 at halftime.

After trading punts to start the second half, Tulsa starts a drive at their own 38 yard line...but that's as far as they go, as Cody Green throws his second INT to Tevin Mitchel who returns it 38 yards for an Arkansas touchdown. 21-10. The Golden Hurricane offense drives down the field, using a mix of Trey Watts and Willie Carter to get down to the 18 yard line, where Green throws to Thomas Roberson who drags two defenders into the end zone for a TU TD.

There would be no scoring in the fourth quarter, as Cody Green throws his third INT of the day to seal the victory for Arkansas with just 2 minutes left in the game. When asked after the game if the coaches are looking to make a change at QB, Coach Bill Blankenship replied with "What the f--- do you think? Cody Green is a good quarterback...when he has his head in the game. Unfortunately, that has not been the case too often this year. We WILL have a battle this week to see who will start the next game for us. We need to win games without mistakes, especially from the quarterback position. We don't throw the ball a lot. We run a very detail-oriented offense. We need the quarterback to be THE smartest man on the football field. He needs to get us out of bad plays, and into the right plays. He needs to be able to read the coverage, and make the smart throw. Cody Green has not done that.".

Tulsa also received it's first batch of commitments, with 5 recruits signing on the dotted line this week. They are:

CB Michael Atkins of Miami, OK (pronounced MI-AM-UH). He is a 3-star prospect who will come in at 65 OVR.
FB Ronald Rivas of Mesquite, TX. He is a 1-star prospect with an OVR rating of 63.
CB Brandon Powers of Coweta, OK. He is a 3-star prospect with an OVR rating of 65.
DT Aaron Young of Alva, OK. He is a 3-star prospect with an OVR rating of 55.
DE Randy Johnson of Nederland, TX. He is a 3-star prospect with an OVR of 62.

Tulsa hopes to receive three more Letters Of Intent next week.

NEW QB, SAME OLD PROBLEMS


Last week, Coach Bill Blankenship said there would be a competition for the quarterback spot. He kept the results secret until Tulsa received the ball against Houston...maybe he should've kept them secret even longer. Sophomore Kalen Henderson marched out to the 31 yard line to begin his first start of the year, and promptly did what no one expected- threw an interception. Well, so much for that battle, eh? Gone are the days of GJ Kinne throwing the ball all over defenses, and here are the days where Tulsa may just become a "running" team. Which, now that I think about, doesn't sound too bad, as Trey Watts and Ja'Terian Douglas each rushed for over 100 yards against Houston. Sure, Henderson threw two touchdowns and 222 yards. He also threw 3 interceptions and went 10-23. Not exactly what the coaches had in mind. The running backs "put the team on there backs doe", with Douglas finishing with 102 yards on 18 carries and Watts with 100 yards and 2 TD's on 14 rushes. Bulldozer Alex Singleton slammed in a touchdown from four yards out as well. Linebacker Shaun Jackson led the team with 6 tackles(4 for loss, 2 sacks).

Tulsa defeats rival Houston 35-17

Tulsa is now 8-2 on the year with an unblemished 6-0 C-USA record.
Houston falls to 6-4 with a 4-2 C-USA record.​

I played the next two games (UCF and the C-USA Championship game), went to advance to the Bowl, and it froze. Shut everything down, turned it back on, and the file was corrupted. The one time I try to do this with my favortie team, and I can't make it out of the first year.

With that being said, I would like to try another one. I had fun doing this, and I've always loved reading these. I'm still playing the game every other day, so I'm not sick of it yet. I will most likely be using a different team, and am open to suggestions.

As of right now, I've got a few teams I'm thinking of.
