I agree, Carter was like a machine. I'm actually still trying to figure out why he isn't in the HOF. IMO most of it has to do with his personality and the fact he had some drug issues.....most of the voters like to take into account stuff that doesn't matter.

BTW, Ward better hope Moss and TO don't retire anytime soon, because the both of them should be first ballot guys, but the voters will probably hold them out, which pushes Ward back.

Yeah, I forgot about TO. The way it likely falls now is that if TO and Moss each retire in the next 1-2 seasons then they will be up 1-2 seasons after Ward's first time on the ballot. So the 2nd and 3rd balltos when Ward might have a shot he ends up on a ballot with those two.

The interesting thing will be is if TO and Moss were/are big enough ass clowns that the writers make them wait a year giving Ward a chance to slide in.

Carter not being in the HOF is astounding to me. The fact that it's taken him this long can't bode well for Ward down the line.

Hours following Hines Ward's tearful goodbye to Steeler Nation, one former foe wasn't so sad to see him retire.

Bengals safety Chris Crocker, never a fan of Wards' aggressive blocking habits, said Ward deserved to be a Hall of Famer, but went on to criticize the wide receiver.

"He tried to end people's careers and that's not the way the game is supposed to be played," Crocker told bengals.com.

As the team points out, Crocker joined the team just after Ward blindsided Bengals linebacker Keith Rivers, breaking his jaw. Crocker claims Ward punched him in the face during a play in 2009.

"Stuff like that, it's just not right," Crocker said. "And I'm not the only guy that thinks it."

So because Cris Carter went to Miami at 37 years old and was a non factor and had kidney issues and retired that means Moss "helped" Carter stay relevant in Minnesota even though Carter was viewed as one of the top WR's in the league when Moss was getting rejected by colleges and was a highly productive WR both immedietly before and during Moss tenure in Minny?

You act like Carter seperated himself so much. He has slightly better numbers, in two more years. He had several good seasons. It's not like I'm saying he was bad, but Ward was a better player IMO. He was better in the run game, came up huge in big games, and was a better leader on better teams.

His peak was far better than Wards. So much so it's not even worth discussing. He had twice as many Pro Bowls, made two all pro teams, lead the league in receieving catagories. etc.

Ward was a classic compiler. Never great. Consistantly good. Good for him I suppose.

Carter, while having runs of being "good to very good" also had a few great seasons that were ridiculously productive(even before Moss).

Ward isn't in Carter's class as far as quality of WR's go.

What hurt Carter the most from the compiling standpoint was his early career drug issues in Philly. Sucks but whatever.

End of the day with each at their peak Carter far surpassed Ward as a player both stats wise but awards wise during those stretches. Ward had longer more "consistant" success but Carter had a long run of consistant success too and coupled with his enormous peak production advantage and the hardware he laps Ward rather easily. Placing Ward over Carter overall as a player smacks of nothing more than homerism.

Carter was an 8-time pro bowler and a 2 time All-Pro, and that was in the tough NFC which was stockpiled with great WRs. Ward made the pro bowl a few times, and was never considered one of the top WRs in the game. If Ward's case is longevity and blocking, then Art Monk retired as the all-time leading WR and it still took Monk years to get into Canton because he was never really an elite WR. If Ward's case is SB rings, then Cliff Branch has a much stronger resume than Hines Ward.

I just don't see anything other than his SB MVP that screams out HOFer to me, and even the SB MVP argument is kind of a "cherry on top" than anything substantial.

But who knows, I've been wrong about guys in the past (Floyd Little, Dick LeBeau, etc).

This needs to be posted again.

Also, the Rod Smith with a SB MVP comparison is a good one from earlier.

Ward gets in but he will and should have to wait a while.

Carters best Receptions season was 122(twice..pre Moss). Wards 112.

Carters three best TD seasons beat Ward's best.

If your argument is revolving around Ward having one season(112-1329-12) that is somewhat comaprable to Carter's best(122-1371-17TD's) despite the fact that this was in the middle of an era where Carter was one of the top 5-6 WR's in football for a stretch of 5 years, was making All Pro teams, leading the league in receptions and TD catches, while Ward never made an All Pro team, lead the league in any major receving catagory, and never had one year that surpassed anything Carter did......you don't have any argument. At all.

Actually it's not. Moss's first year Carter's numbers still "fell off" a bit more, then rebounded back up the following two seasons...then again this is moot because Carter was already better than Ward before Moss even showed up as has already been shown...so......

I think if Ward had more All-Pro seasons or years where he was considered one of the top 4 or 5 WRs in the league, I wouldn't have as hard a time putting him into Canton. You can say Carter was never the best WR (Rice always was), but Carter was always in the conversation with guys like Sterling Sharpe and Michael Irvin. It would be interesting to see how many 100-yard games and how many multiple TD games Ward had and compare those totals to guys like Cris Carter and Andre Reed. I just don't recall Ward regularly having big games. He was consistent, but not spectacular, and in my book "consistent" isn't good enough for the HOF.
