Brett Favre was so tough, they never listed him on the injury report (ask the New York Jets & Mangini). I mean he has been in this league for 19 years, playing at a pretty good level throughout, he also holds the most starts record by the way. He knows he's gonna get hit, takes it, gets back up and smiles (maybe not the strahan one). And people go in for the kill when they get a chance to attack the quarterback. I mean we may have differing definitions of toughness when it comes to the NFL, but how can you argue that consistency over a LONG period of time is not one of them.

Payton played the games most grueling and violent position. He missed 1 game in 13 years.

Seriously, comparing Favre's starting streak to Youngbloods...football now is so much different from what it used to be. Not to mention, in today's day and age, quarterbacks are the most pampered players in the NFL, you can't even give them a pat on the head without drawing a 15 yard penalty. Thats not even considering the medical, dietary, and exercise developments that allow people to play longer and stronger than ever before. Favre isn't even the toughest player in his era and I would argue that the majority of players from the earlier days of the NFL were far tougher than just about any player in the modern NFL.

You ever read anything about Bear Bryant's Alabama or A&M teams? Those guys played with broken jaws, broken hands, herniated disks, hell, one of the guys from A&M had such a bum shoulder, he dislocated it on damned near every play. Another guy on the team played the whole season with near crippling back pain from herniated disks.

Favre plays quarterback in an era where it's illegal to touch them. Jack Youngblood was an undersized DE in an era where you could murder each other.

I wouldn't go that far. Favre has been hit so hard by Greg Lloyd of the Steelers that he coughed up blood and had to leave the game only to return after one play. He used to get hit so hard by Warren Sapp from the Bucs that you could feel the impact through the television.

He's been playing 20 years. This whole "don't touch the QB" thing is within the past 2 or 3 seasons.

It's so hard comparing players from differen't eras, it's almost pointless to try.

I want everyone here to just answer one question..

Was he even the best quarterback this decade, or the best quarterback in the 90's? Wouldn't you agree that Elway/Young had him in the 90's and that Payton Manning had in the 2000's?

If you ask that to yourself and say yes then he can't be the GOAT. I think the vast majority will agree with that statement as well.

Im guessing you pulled the whole most "violent and grueling position" from a documentary or NFL Films Presents, but the O-Line & D-Line is the most grueling and violent position and that is on EVERY SINGLE PLAY.

Im not denying Payton was not a tough player because he was. He had a career longer than most RBs even by today's standard. Its just in my mind toughness is all about going out there every fucking day and doing work. Yes he has bad days, what quarterback hasn't, but he always goes out there because he has the will power too? Not only is he physically strong but he I would argue, is mentally strong as well.

No coincidence that Walter Payton, Brett Favre and Steve McNair are all from South Mississippi. There are some tough football players in that part of the country.

Actually no, I didn't. Runningback is widely seen as that position because of the high impacts thoe players take on nearly every play whether it be running or pass blocking. Also because of the fact that it has the shortest average life span for an NFL player mainly due to the larger injury risk at the position.

Its just in my mind toughness is all about going out there every fucking day and doing work.

OK, and Payton, Mrashall, and Page did that at more physically demanding positions. I'm not saying Favre isn't tough. He is. Buthe is not "tougher" than Payton, Marshall, Page, or guys like Butkus, Nitschke, Lambert etc that played in more violent eras.

I understand how great of a QB Manning is, but his playoff record pales in comparison to some of the greats. His playoff numbers are not good enough for me to call him the greatest QB of all time. That said, he is the greatest regular season football player of all time.

If Favre wins the Super Bowl this year, he will undoubtedly deserve to be in the discussion. You must also take into the fact that he missed all of training camp and went 12-4 in the regular season at the age of 40. The guy is easily one of the most special football players to ever play the game. Where you want to rank him is up to you, but there's no way any of you will ever forget this guy for the rest of your football watching careers.
