Has DiCaprio shown the range that Lewis, Depp, Washington, Hanks, or even Norton has? I would say he hasn't. He has been very good in his movies, but all 4 of those guys have shown just as much acting ability, but FAR more range. Heck, Lewis and Depp even out acted Leo in movies they co-starred in.

Nope. I judge him on his entire shitty career. But Seven was particularly bad. I mean, just awful. He almost killed a great movie.

Fight Club is a decent movie, but Pitt was nothing special. Snatch was terrible.

Reasonable minds can disagree, but there is no f'n way he was was remotely "great" in that movie. He was so bad it's comical. It's as if he's reading cue cards. It's B-movie hilarity at some points.

I can kind of agree with you, but there are very different extremes in there. Malcolm X was an alpha male, very enthusiastic, but it was a much more sensitive piece and he had to act as a very specific person, which he did incredibly. In Man on Fire, he was an alpha male again, but you'd hardly say the roles were even close to eachother. He did far less speaking and his physical acting was on key. In Training Day, he was an alpha male, but in this, it was ALL his verbal acting and how he portrayed the role that made that movie. None of those three roles are anywhere similar to eachother, but all three could be labelled "Alpha male" roles.

Comparing Leo's performance to Lewis' in Gangs of New York and to Depp's in What's Eating Gilbert Grape is downright silly because of their roles.

DiCaprio has unbelievable range but has limited himself by choice because he wants to be seen as a more serious actor. He purposely shed the dreamy DiCaprio label he got from Titanic because he didn't want to go down that road. If you read some of his interviews, he talks about how he didn't even want to make movies after Titanic because of all the fame and love he was getting. He actually had somewhat of a rough childhood.

The last "non-serious" character he played was in Catch Me If You Can, which was 8 years ago. He obviously hand picks his films very specifically. But if you can't see the difference in his roles in Blood Diamond and The Aviator then I don't know what to tell you.

That said, Brad Pitt is probably my favorite actor of all time. Not because he's the best actor, but because he's played some of my favorite characters ever. From Inglorious Basterds to Snatch to Fight Club to Spy Game, and so on, I'm just a big fan of most of his films and they seem to fly all over the radar.

IMO, his best acting was in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape".
I haven't seen Inception yet, so I can't include that, but DiCaprio has never done anything even remotely as great as Gilbert Grape.
The Departed was a brilliant movie, but I think the script carried that one, not DiCaprio.
And he ISN'T the single reason why Titanic did what it did. James Cameron is. Titanic's effects were brilliant. Any decent actor could have pulled Titanic off. That movie could only fail if Pauly Shore got the lead.

I'm not knocking DiCaprio. Clearly the guy makes studios a lot of money and I like a lot of his movies, but actor of his generation? I'm not saying he's not, but I've never seen him knock one out of the park - other than Gilbert Grape.
