maybe not in the worst call ever....but it was a bad call. he was tagged long before he got to the base. and the player was standing there like, you got me. then he was called safe, and the player started celebrating.

I was thinking about this, and the worst call I have ever seen was Pete Morelli's "overturn" of Troy Polamalu's interception against the Colts in the playoffs a few years ago. I think its the worst because Morelli had the benefit of instant replay, and not only did he blow the call, he overturned the correct call that had been made on the field.

Was that specific rule in place at that time? I hate that Johnson's catch was overturned, but I thought that under the rules that year that there was nothing wrong with the Polamalu INT. Could be remembering incorrectly though.
 
Honestly, it doesn't look very clear from those replays. It seems likely that he tagged him, but I can see why the ump would say he didn't.

Oddly enough, replay wouldn't have helped much.

Frankly, I think guys swipe tag way too much. Especially at home. If I'm the catcher, from now on, I leave no doubt that I tagged him. Maybe I leave a bruise, but the guy was tagged.

Lugo's body language puts any debate to bed. He was tagged.
 
I'll take your word for it. But the ump isn't supposed to be watching Lugo's body language. He's supposed to be watching the play. Specifically the tag and Lugo getting to the plate. Lugo's reaction shouldn't be noticed by the ump.

And this is far from the worst call ever. A dude lost a PERFECT GAME last year due to a blown call that was far more obvious than this one.

Did you even see the play? I'm baffled that anyone could possibly be defending the call in any way, shape or form.

I'm not saying he should make the call based on Lugo's body language. I'm saying that Lugo's body language confirms what everybody on the planet saw, which was the worst call in the history of sports. I find it hard to believe you can call any other call "far worse" than this one, considering the guy was tagged out in the BATTERS BOX before he was within 3 ft of home plate.

By the way, the ump conceded today that he blew the call, so that puts this baby to bed.
