A player's reaction means NOTHING. Period.

You look at the play. You look at the ball. You look at the player touching the base.

No tag. Lugo touched home. Safe. Game over.

Look I understand the ump says he blew the call, and thats fine. Frankly, I think some pressure is being put on him by Major League Baseball. But I've seen that play at least 20 times. At no time does it look like the catcher tagged him. It looks like he missed. I know I'm not the only one that thinks so.

It honestly sounds like you guys are saying the ump should have called him out because the ball beat the player to the plate and Lugo reacted like he was dead to rights. If I'm wrong, then find a different way to explain it. Because telling me I'm trolling and saying "OMG look at Lugo's reaction" is not working nor should it be a reason. It shouldn't matter what Lugo had done. If he had gotten up and started screaming at the umpire that McKinley missed the tag, then what?

What no one has shown is obvious evidence that the tag was applied. I know I'm not the only one who thinks that the camera angles make it questionable as to whether or not Lugo was actually tagged out. Everyone has assumed it because McKinley had the plate blocked, the ball was way ahead of the runner and McKinley swiped. Every time I see it, it looks like he missed the tag.

The ump never should have said anything. There's no way to prove that Lugo was tagged. Every camera angle is questionable at best and the one from center field is the most convincing that he swiped and missed.

Like a poster previously mentioned, don't leave any doubt about the tag.

Actually after looking at that video Slateman posted, I'm not so sure.

When you look at the standard angle from behind the ref it looks like the catcher could've touched the guy at any spot during his sweep. However when you look at the angle from the side you see that almost that entire sweep undoubtedly made no contact, and there's only one possible place the tag could've occurred. If you ask me there isn't enough evidence one way or the other, certainly not enough to start flamming someone for the side they picked.

I was gonna mention it earlier but I knew I'd be groaned, flammed, quoted and ask how I could possibly think that etc..... I don't even know how it's possible to defend something this small, it's just what I think.

As far as I'm concerned, this call in the Braves/Pirates game should be so obvious that any random joe blow who knows even the slightest bit about baseball could make the correct call, yet this seemingly professional ump makes the wrong call because it seems that he just wants to go home. I heard on Twitter that he was standing up players and had a really inconsistent strike zone before this happened too, so this ump should've been canned the next day.

Honestly, I think Lugo expected to be out and that was his body language. He should have been. He was dead to right. But the catcher missed the tag, or so it appears to me.

The Galarraga call was one thing. You freeze the replay and the runner is three feet away from the base when the ball is in Galarraga's glove and his foot is on first. This play? Not so clear.

His strike zone was awful. Frankly, the bases never should have been loaded in the first place.

No, I don't think baseball put pressure on him to concede a mistake. Especially if Meals stands by the call and doesn't think that he made a mistake in the first place. Meals knows he was wrong, and made the worst call in the history of sports, so he manned up and owned his mistake.

And why do you keep bringing up Galarraga? Galarraga has nothing to do with this. This call was not only far more obvious, but also a more important call because the wrong team may have won the game. The Tigers won, at the end of the day we are talking about a personal accomplishment. The Pirates have been reeling since the blown call, btw.
